My feelings on The Demon Rush
The marathon isn't for another 4 months, but it will creep up on us quickly, which is why we should start considering what we want to support this time.

Now there are a lot of charities out there, but due to the aftermath of Classic Games Done Quick, the two following things are obvious:

1. There is no way we will ever support CARE again.

2. A smaller charity is a better idea. They'll be easier to talk to, and more importantly, the money we raise for them will make a bigger difference.

3. Again, I'd rather not go with Child's Play.

Cody Miller suggested The Brian Morden Foundation, which is definitely a smaller charity that stands for a good cause, but maybe there's another charity people want to go for. Also, I haven't checked out charity in detail.

Are there any good causes people want to support? Speak up!

Anything for autism is fine with me, don't know of any off-hand.

I dont mind since where ever it goes Im sure it will put to good use.

Having said that I think Cancer Research is a good idea

my vote goes to cancer cures research (see where i was quoted above); don't have any specific charity in mind. can look around for some this week.

Same as arkarian. I'll continue the sort of running joke I had going when we were deciding last marathon and say "That one International Cancer Charity that I obviously don't feel THAT strongly about since I still don't remember its damn name." Tongue
We all scream for Eyes Cream
I still vote the Mike Uyama Foundation or even the Get Mike a Beer Fund

Likewise, although I don't know of any specific charities.
Now a hit show on the CW
I'm in full support of any cancer research related charities. I just want to point out that the main reason I brought up Child's Play before was that I knew it would drive a lot of traffic to our streams. We can probably still get a shout out on Penny Arcade, as they'll mention any gaming marathon, I just think the timing will be rather poor as our marathon will be happening right after Christmas (the same time when PA always makes their big Child's Play push).

Cancer Research is a good cause, I'll look into it.

I was just thinking, does anyone want to support Gulf of Mexico restoration? There's still a lot of cleanup that still needs to be done in the area. The only drawback I can think of is that it is an America-centric issue.

Ryman: I can cover that fund myself, thanks. Tongue

i dunno ... shouldn't bp pay for that?

This.

Everyone loves cancer, it seems, but personally I have a soft spot for malaria. The pill that cures malaria only costs ~1$, but still about 2.3 million people die from it every year. A vaccination method is also seemingly imminent (or at least on the way) but more funding is always helpful.

Just an idea if cancer doesn't work out Smiley

Moo! Flap! Hug!

Or, to quote former Canadian Natural Resources Minister Lisa Raitt, cancer is "sexy."

But, silliness aside, you'll always do well with either (a) a medical charity, or (b) a children's charity.  They're things that everyone can get behind, and causes for which people feel good when they donate their money.

we could go for broke and do a children's medical charity!!!

owait that's child's play

I'd donate to any good cause, but even though cancer research may have won the day, I would just like to vote for an austism/asperger's charity as well.

But...that one works in context...

Ditto on Insipid's point. I support those causes as well. Well, I don't support autism or aspergers. But you all probably understand what I'm saying.

My feelings on The Demon Rush
Don't worry, I haven't abandoned this topic. I even found some cancer research charities in the meantime.

All of these charities:

-Focus on cancer research
-80%+ expenses are used for program services
-Are nowhere near as big as CARE. The biggest is Prevent Cancer Foundation, and their total revenue last year was less than 10 million dollars, IIRC. For reference, CARE is somewhere around 600-650 million.

Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation

http://www.pcrf-kids.org/ (go to the bottom left corner to turn off the music)

This is a California-based charity that researches methods to fight childhood cancer.

CURE Childhood Cancer

http://www.curechildhoodcancer.org/

Similar to PCRF, but this charity is based in Atlanta.

Prevent Cancer Foundation

http://www.preventcancer.org/

This one is a bit different from the other two. PCF not only focuses on cancer research, they also educate people ob how to prevent cancer.

I'm going to be honest, all three look good, but I'm biased towards Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation because I know for a fact that they have a Paypal account.

Im gonna vote for Prevent Cancer Foundation although any of them sound good.
Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation imo
1-Up!
If people are likely to donate to cancer research, then I'd say they're even more likely to donate to prevent child cancer.  Since we know Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation has Paypal, I say we go with them.
Talk to the Hand
Any of the three would work, but I like the Prevent Cancer Foundation one if I'm forced to pick just one. I like that they focus on not just eliminating it once it occurs, but on, um, preventing it as well.
that Metroidvania guy
isn't PCF the one in your local-ish area?

anyway, i figured child cancer research funding would be a good choice, so PCRF works.
Professional Second Banana
I agree with MTI that preventing cancer as well as treating it sounds like a worthy cause.
