Segment 18 complete! I managed to get the time down to 4 minutes 2 seconds, even better than I expected. I made a slight misstep on B6, but at this point I'm not too worried about 1 extra step anymore. There was only 1 Enemy Strikes first out of 14 encounters in the segment, which is very lucky, and no failed fleeing attempts either.  It took me over 150 restarts to get this result  Shocked
Reading the responses, I would probably smash the console if I would continue.
Segment 19 complete now, took me longer than I expected. Adamantoise didn't seem to want to drop a Diamond Shield when I was recording. Only things that could have been better were Josef not attacking Adamantoise first, and not getting an enemy strikes first on the way to Borghen. I was fortunate that Firion didnt get killed there since he was still unarmed after Adamantoise. These were pretty minor flaws though, not worth it to redo imo.

Game time after exiting the Snow Cavern is 0:46, which is about 5 minutes ahead of the Ultima Garden time, and way ahead of my test run time, so things are looking pretty good so far  8)
Bwahahaha... there WILL be domination!
I'm posting again in full support of this run, because I look forward to seeing the finished product on the main page ^_^

also, getting that run in 150 is still not a bad set... kudos.
Segment 20 done. A very simple segment, but in this run even the simple segments are hard, lol. Maria and Gus are alive again from Josef leaving the party, so I need to kill them off in a timely manner again. After that I just need to not get anymore Enemy Strikes First on the way to Kas'ion.

Time outside Kas'ion castle is 0:49
Segment 21 is kicking my ass today, which is going through Kas'ion up to the boss Shrieker without having to kill anything. It's about the same difficulty as Snow Cavern, except that I have use the Goddess Bell, go through Gordon's dialogue, and switch Gordon's bronze shield to Firion at the start of every attempt, so it takes a while to actually get to the hard part.

Like the Snow Cavern, I am tempted to split it into 2 segments, but I am determined to get through it in 1, since I did make it through on my test run. The Dreadnought, coming up afterwards, is the first "dungeon" where I absolutely have to save in the middle to make it through without killing anything.

I have a feeling this segment won't be completed tonight, but hopefully I will get some good luck soon.
While doing the Kas'ion castle segment I discovered something interesting that I half suspected before, but didn't really put to the test until now. The order of the encounters seems to not be random at all. Which order of encounters you get is random each time you restart though.  This could be very bad, especially in a segment this long, because if I can't roll a set of encounters that gets me all the way to the boss, then I could be working on this segment for eternity.

I first noticed it when I got all the way to 4F fleeing every battle, then I got an Adamantoise. Normally I would just restart here cause I can't flee from it, but I decided to kill it and move on. Then on 5F i get another Adamantoise, kill it and keep moving. Then I get two Wraiths which strike me first and kill me, since im still unarmed from the Adamantoise.  Well I would have just chalked this up to bad luck, but then about 30 attempts later I got the exact same thing: 2 Adamantoises in a row and then 2 Wraiths that kill me, in the exact same places as before. So I decided to look back at both attempts, and sure enough, every single encounter in both the attempts were exactly the same. Even the Enemy Strikes Firsts were in the same place.

I could use this to my advantage though, if I recognize that same order, and then save before the first Adamantoise. Then I can just have another segment on the way to the boss. Or maybe I can take some steps in the wrong direction and see if that changes the encounter or not.

In any case, I'm glad I found this, cause this may save me from attempting this a thousand times and never getting it done. Then I will have a legitimate reason to split the castle into two segments.

I also think I should write down the exact order of encounters when I get far, so I know if I'm going to run into a bad encounter if I see that order again.
I've been writing down every encounter I get, and I haven't come up with any kind of pattern yet. In fact I haven't gotten the same set of encounters yet since I've been specifically testing it, not even a bad set of encounters. There's probably so many different combinations though that it will take forever to find any kind of pattern, if there even is one.

Well I have finally, after hundreds of attempts, finished the Kas'ion Castle segments. Discovering that thing about the encounters definitely helped a lot. I might have been trying that segment for a year otherwise. I had a list of the best encounter sets in front of me as I was playing, and I finally recognized a good one that I could use. Unfortunately I had to split the castle into two segments, but getting through in one just wasn't in the cards in this run. It was a good place to save though cause it was pretty much right in the middle. 1st half had 7 encounters, 2nd half had 6 encounters.

So now I have finished
Segment 21 - Castle Kas'ion 1F-3F
Segment 22 - Castle Kas'ion 3F-5F (then back down to 4F where the boss is)
Segment 23 - Shrieker, Egil's Torch, Sunfire, Dreadnought capturing Airship cutscene
Segment 24 - Chocobo Forest, Ride Chocobo to Dreadnought landing site

The last two probably could have been done in one segment, but I need a pre-emptive strike on Shrieker (which doesn't happen often), or else it will kill me, and the Chocobo actually takes some luck to nab quickly. It wanders around and isn't always in your path.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, time at the Dreadnought landing site is 0:56, 7 minutes ahead of the Ultima Garden time.
Finished the Dreadnought segments (what a pain in the ass), which are segments 25-29.

Snow Cavern and Kas'ion have got nothing on the Dreadnought in terms of fleeing difficulty, especially on 1F-4F (5F is slightly easier).
This is why I have to have so many segments for the Dreadnought. Each one took me well over a hundred attempts. I think I was also incredibly lucky to not only have fled every battle, but also to not get a single Enemy Strikes First in the whole Dreadnought. I was expecting almost 1 ESF per segment.

The only flaws on these segments were running into a guard at the beginning, which sucks, but it was the only time I had ever gotten through 1F without an ESF; and the end of 4F, where I forgot there was an extra door and staircase to go through before reaching 5F. So there was somewhat of a pause there, but at least I didn't actually open the menu to go save (that would have ruined an otherwise perfect segment).

So here's what's done:

Segment 25 - Dreadnought 1F
Segment 26 - Dreadnought 2F (Rescue Cid/Hilda)
Segment 27 - Dreadnought 1F revisited
Segment 28 - Dreadnought 3F-4F
Segment 29 - Dreadnought 5F, Destroy Dreadnought, Airship ride to Altair.

Time outside Altair, after Dreadnought destruction, is 1:04
just letting you know im anticipating this run. keep it coming!
Segment 30 is complete. It's a pretty simple segment, but theres some menu stuff that needs to be done quickly, which I tend to mess up quite a bit.

In this segment I rest at the inn to restore Firion's MP, go watch the king die, and get the keywords Dragoon and Wind Drake from Gordon. Then I go to the magic shop and sell the Diamond Shield and buy 10 Fire scrolls for unavoidable battles later. Then I get on Leilas ship, kill the pirates with 2 Fire Scrolls, and switch Leila's Gold Hairpin to Firion to give him +10 agility.

Time at Sea, after the pirate battle, is 1:08

I see this, it's 6 pages in and I can contribute (yay).

Quote from Aitamen:
Umm...  it's impossible to avoid encounters altogether (like in FF1, there's a randomized step counter that does NOT reset when you memo), so why not rearrange your starting equipment to level all your skills to 16 in the first 16 battles you get into?

Monsters can and will run from you even at the beginning of the game (Stranglers and Hornets). To pull this off reliably, you'd need to get into a battle against something that will not run from you (Bloodsuckers, Soldiers, etc).

  • Forget doing attack/cancel, there's a faster way. Equip two shields on a character, and just spam attack over and over. When you are ready to finish, equip to the weapons you want and then kill the mobs.
  • For God's sake use Jade so you know what you'll be running into. Nothing was changed for the PS port (except for a couple names, but that's easy to sort out) so you don't have to worry about that.
  • I started a test run of this the other day (didn't go well, was farming the Captains in Fynn for $$$ and was under 2 hours, but it was still sloppy) and I noticed that when you fight something is saved. In other words, you can do some prepping for an upcoming (random) battle. I don't know if the formation and numbers are also the same, I wasn't looking at that.
  • The fist is by far the best weapon of the game (even beats one-handed Masamune by a few points). Only drawback is that evade is 0.
  • --Edit 1-- Drain attacks are indeed Max HP based. Each hit drains 1/16 of max HP. This is what makes many undead so deadly, as well as Astaroth and the Emperor.
  • --Edit 2-- There's 3 spikes in difficulty in the game. One is in the Tower of Mysidia (good luck hitting the three bosses in there with anything), one is when you approach Castle Deist (where you find the Wind Drake), and one is in the Coliseum (only by the sheer number of mages you'll see).

You'd think I'd remember more, but at the moment I cannot. My apologies I'm late to the party, wish I would've seen this sooner. Good luck with the run.

By the by, when the marathon was finished, I was thinking 10 hours was doable (which is why I started a test run that lasted all of 2 segments) so if you get in faster than that consider me a happy camper. Grin
It would have been better if you had read the last 3 pages rather than the first 3 pages. That's kind of why I made a new topic initially, so people wouldn't be confused by the old discussion.

To put the strategy in a nutshell, I level Firion's Barehand and Shield to level 10 and flee all encounters with dual shields and kill all bosses with barehand. Then once I get the Blood Sword, Gareth and Leon will kill the rest of the bosses since their sword level is already high. And the Defender I get from the Cyclone will let them flee without using a shield.

And don't worry, the run is not anywhere close to 10 hours. I'm looking at a time of about 2 hours 40 minutes, which is the time when the final boss dies. The final save after the credits will be about 2 hours 46 minutes.

I read as I was going along (hence the edits) and didn't see the split+merge until well after the fact (sorry guys).

Jade Passage + Pandemonium alone must take up 40 minutes, so I'm curious about where you are saving time. Though I haven't read every word, I'm curious about the shopping and treasure pickups (for instance, did you buy Warp in Salamand or did you get it in the Semite Cave?).

Guess it really doesn't pay to be late to the party. =\

Caracarn: 2009-07-27 01:13:05 am
I only shop 4 times in the whole run. 1st is selling all initial equipment and buying an extra buckler, 2nd is selling Mindu's gear and buying Warp/Life in Salamand, 3rd is selling the Diamond Shield from Adamantoise and buying Fire Scrolls in Altair, and 4th is buying Blink scrolls and another Life scroll in Mysidia.

Except for the chests that contain key items, the only chests I open are for the Blood Sword in Fynn Basement, Defender in the Cyclone, an Ether in the Coliseum, Headband/Power Sash/Power Armlet in the Leviathan, and Ninja Suit in Mysidian Cavern. Nothing else is worth going out of the way to get.

Jade Passage should only take about 4-5 minutes, and Pandemonium another 7-8 minutes (including the final boss), since I am fleeing every encounter.
I am going to redo Segment 30, to take me up to the tropical island instead of saving right after getting control of the ship, since there is only one sea encounter on the way there.

Since I am getting far too many encounters on the Deist island, I decided I'm going to do the Tropical Island before Deist instead of after. Since my stepcount was different on my test run, I was able to get through the island with hardly any encounters, but now I am getting a rediculous amount. Unfortunately, I have to improvise a lot in this run to avoid certain encounters. What was easy on one run can become very hard on another run, simply because of the difference in the stepcount.

Hopefully, when I go to Deist afterwards, my luck with the encounters will be better.
Ok, I redid Segment 30 to take me up to the Tropical Island entrance. Not too much of a change here, just 1 more sea encounter to flee and moving the ship to the island.

Segment 31 takes me all the way through the Tropical Island cave to the Gigan Rhino boss. I was once again very lucky here and did not get a single Enemy Strikes First the whole way through. This time I left Maria and Gus alive though, because they need to take hits from the boss. Having Maria and Gus alive when fleeing is about a second longer per encounter, but I can't spend an MP point on Life here, because I need to Warp 4 times and Life 1 other time before I can get more MP.

Segment 32 is killing the Gigan Rhino. I need to kill him in two hits, and he needs to only kill Maria and Gus, not Leila. Then I grab the Black Mask, Warp out, and sail to Deist. I get one Sea encounter on the way to avoid getting an encounter on the island, and I run to the cavern entrance. (I Warp out instead of using the teleporter to the north, because I would have gotten an encounter before it, and because I would have ended up getting an encounter on the Deist island).

Time outside the Deist Cavern (before getting the Pendant) is 1:13
Well I am still working on the Deist segments. They are taking forever as I knew they would.

Segment 33 went down ok; killed two groups of undead with fire scrolls, got the pendant, then escaped from 2 Slivers. The slivers struck first, but this was the best attempt I was able to get. I get the egg from the Wind Drake and Warp out.

Segment 34 I head back to the cavern, escape from 2 groups of Slivers, and then kill 1 group of undead on B1. The undead struck first, but at least they all missed.

Segment 35, 36, and 37 all take place on B2. The only encounter I can possibly flee from is Revenants, and they are very rare to get on this floor, so I have to split this floor into 3 segments. The odds of me getting even 2 Revenant groups in a row, much less 3, are astronomical.

If that wasn't hard enough, now Segment 38 is going from B3 to the Chimeras on B5. It is not nearly as rare to get Revenants here, and I can also flee from Ogre Chieftains, but still, the odds of me getting all the way through to the boss without getting Hill Gigas' or Howlers is pretty bad. This doesn't cover every attempt, cause I didn't start writing it down till later, but in 100 attempts, I only got past the first encounter 17 times. And out of those 17 I only got past the 2nd encounter 6 times. Considering I need to get past at least 4 encounters, but probably 5, it's looking like I may have to add another segment here :/

Time at the start of Deist Cavern B3 is 1:18
berserker status
Don't worry dude, just keep at it and it'll eventually come.  I never kept track of the attempts i made on some of my Vagrant Story segments because i would've gone crazy after the 200th try.  Obviously some parts are harder than others in speed runs but once you get past this segment it'll be like scratching that itch that wouldn't go away.  once you get what you want, just relax and execute so you won't have to go through it again.  i can't tell you the number of times i messed up a segment because i got all dick happy that things went my way and then proceeded to make a fatal mistake.
Well I finally finished the Deist Cavern with an acceptable result. It turns out that the 5th encounter that I could never get past was the last encounter before the Chimeras, there was no normal encounter on B5. So when I recognized the good pattern that got me past the 4th encounter, I decided to save after it. Then the next segment, which was supposed to be just the Chimera battle, ended up being that last encounter plus the Chimera battle. That made it take a lot longer to get past the Chimeras, but it wasn't too bad, especially because I got only 1 Chimera in a Preemptive strike, and I didn't have to have an extra segment.

That was Segment 38 and 39, so now I am outside the Deist Cavern, after dropping the Dragon Egg in the Spring, with a time of 1:20
Segments 40 and 41 are done.

Segment 40 I need to get through 2 encounters on the island before I get to the ship, and then 3 sea encounters on the way to Altair. Leila dies in the 2nd encounter, but it's ok, because I was expecting her to get killed in the Chimera battle anyway. Once I get to Altair, I go right outside the Princess's room, use Firion's last MP to cast Life on the party and save.

Segment 41 is the Lamia Queen battle, and I annoyingly have to go through that dialogue every attempt. For this battle I need either Maria or Gus to stay alive for the Behemoth later, so the Lamia queen has to kill Leila and either Maria or Gus. I also need a Diamond Plate from the boss. It should only take 2 hits to kill it, but I accepted 3 hits, since it was Preemptive strike, it killed the right people, and it gave me the Diamond Plate. Gordon joins the party afterwards, so now he and Maria can be fodder for the Behemoth.

Time outside Altair, after Lamia Queen battle, is 1:25

Oy, the next difficulty spike. Have fun with the mages. Cry
I'd love to, but I think i'll just flee from them instead :p
Finished Segments 42-44.

Segment 42 is pretty simple, I just need to get from Altair to the Coliseum entrance without any Enemy Strikes Firsts and no navigation screw-ups in the ship.

Segment 43 is the Coliseum, starting with the Behemoth battle. I need to kill Behemoth in two hits, and it obviously needs to kill Maria and Gordon, not Firion. Then after Pavel springs me from the jail, I go grab an elixir for Firion. There are no encounters on Coliseum B2, so it does not take too much time to get. Then I use the elixir and go through the invisible walls in the cells to rescue Hilda. (Why do the cells have locked gates, but then have holes in the walls?  ;D) Then I go through yet another hole in the wall on my way out of the Coliseum.

Segment 44 is much the same as 42, except that I'm going to Fynn instead of Altair. I stop the ship at the mouth of the river to the south of Fynn and canoe all the way so I don't get anymore encounters on the way. This way the ship is also close to Mysidia, which is the next place I will be going in the ship.

Time outside Fynn Castle is 1:32
