Quote from Caracarn:
Finished Segments 42-44.

Segment 42 is pretty simple, I just need to get from Altair to the Coliseum entrance without any Enemy Strikes Firsts and no navigation screw-ups in the ship.

This suggests you sailed to Poft, took the airship to whatever-that-castle-is-called-where-Gordon is, walked south and took the Chocobo the rest of the way. Wink

*insert shock smiley here*
I considered getting the Chocobo, but it would only work if the Chocobo stayed put after I get off it. Since it runs away, I would have to walk all the way from the Coliseum to Poft to get the ship on the way back, and that would take far longer than the route I used. I parked the ship in a little corner southwest of the Coliseum and walked the rest of the way. There were only 3 encounters from the ship to the Coliseum, and only 2 on the way back.

Interesting, I never thought of doing that. I always used to take the bird there, then walk around the mountain towards Mysidia on the way back, then to Fynn Castle. And yes, that does sound as long as it does. Tongue Color me impressed.

I have finally finished the Castle Fynn segments 45-49.

Segment 45 I have to go through 2 encounters before I get to the boss, which is hard because the flee rate is like that of the Dreadnought. Once I get past them I need to kill Gottos in 3 hits and have him not hit Firion. Then I go through the secret passage to the basement and cast Life on the party.

Segment 46 is very short, but it took a very long time to finish. You can't flee from anything on B1, so the first encounter I need to get only 1 Revenant, or 2 in a preemptive strike. This took hundreds of resets, since the vast majority of the time you get 6+ enemies here. Afterwards I equip a fire scroll on Firion and Leila.

Segment 47 i use the Fire Scrolls to kill the next encounter on B1, then flee from everything on B2 through B4 up to the Blood Sword chest, then I equip fire scrolls on Firion and Leila again.

Segment 48 I get the Blood Sword and Fire scroll the enemies guarding the chest, then flee from the next 2 encounters on B4.

Segment 49 is probably the most annoying in the game. On B5 there are only two possible encounters: Splinters and Screamers, neither of which I can flee from. Screamers are incredibly rare to get on any floor, but they only have 6 hp and all they do is Cure you. Unfortunately, that is bad, because they Cure you A LOT, which makes it still take forever to get through them. Besides, they are so rare that there is no way I will get 3 encounters with them in a row. So the only other option is to punch the Splinters with Firion and hope he doesn't die. (This is why I got the Diamond Plate from Lamia Queen) The 1st two encounters I got 3 Splinters each, which is the minimum amount that they come in, but the 3rd encounter I got 6 of them. Fortunately, I managed to get through without Firion dying, and 1 shotting most of the Splinters, I think there was only 2 total that I 2 shotted. This segment went about as well as I could have hoped for.

Bwahahaha... there WILL be domination!
Shocked is all I have to say, and I hate smilies: however, it is deserved.

I look forward to this being finished, it's going to make an awesome addition to the list!
Segments 50-55 are now complete.

Segment 50 is mostly a shopping segment. I take the canoe from Fynn to the ship, and then I get 1 sea encounter and 1 land encounter on the way to Mysidia. In Mysidia I buy Thief Gloves to give Firion +10 agility, a Life Scroll for Gareth, and 5 Blink scrolls for later battles.

Segment 51 is simply walking from Mysidia to the Mysidian cavern entrance, but it isn't a cakewalk. For a world map area it is pretty difficult to flee here, so 3 encounters is more than enough for it's own segment.

Segment 52 definitely took the longest out of these 6 segments. Mysidian Cavern B1-B4 is not too hard to get fleeable encounters, but since all i have is a 10 hp Firion, an Enemy Strikes First means death. I was eventually able to get through 12 encounters from B1-B4, leaving the rest for the next segment. I also get a Ninja Suit on B1 to give Firion another +10 agility.

Segment 53 starts with two more encounters on B4 (the 2nd is actually right at the staircase to B5 which is very lucky). Then theres 3 more encounters on B5. The flee rate on B5 is not quite as bad as the Dreadnought, but it's close, which is why this segment has only 5 encounters while the previous one has 12. I grab the Crystal Rod and Warp out.

Segment 54 is basically the same as Segment 51, except I am going from the Cavern to the ship, and then through the whirlpool. I save a memo file at the start of the Intestines, so I don't have to watch the whirlpool cutscene every time I try the next segment.

Segment 55 was pretty tricky. There's a lot of zigzagging through the intestines, so I have to make sure I don't get stuck on walls. Theres two easily fleeable encounters on the way to the Mouth and I pick up the Headband and Power Sash on the way as well. Before getting Gareth I also get the Power Armlet. That bastard NPC standing in front of the Power Armlet chest screwed up lots of good runs by blocking me. Then I talk to Gareth, show him the Crystal Rod, learn Life on him, and Equip him with the Blood Sword, Headband, Power Sash, and Power armlet. I also put the extra buckler and a Blink scroll in his equipment slots.
Then I run through to the Round Worm. This was a very good battle, because it was pre-emptive, and the only person he hit was Gareth, but he didn't kill him like he normally would. So I 3 shotted the Round Worm with the Blood Sword and got out with everyone alive. And Gareth got an Evasion point as well. There was 1 more encounter right after the boss, but theres no way to avoid it.

Time at the Mysidian Tower entrance is 1:52. At this pace, I should break 2:40 by the end.  Smiley
Bwahahaha... there WILL be domination!
Wow... dedication is the only word for this...

except, maybe, for awesome
The Mysidian Tower segments 56-59 are complete.

Segment 56 is 1F-3F including the Fire Gigas at the end. The only luck involved in the Fire Gigas battle is having him kill Maria or Gus instead of Firion.

Segment 57 is made very easy due to the invisible holes in the walls on 4F and 5F, cutting out a large amount of running and encounters. There is the Ice Gigas battle at the end though, who can kill Gareth in one hit, so it needs to kill Firion and Gus/Maria instead.

Segment 58 was initially going to be 6F-7F, with the Thunder Gigas at the end, but the flee rate on 6F is like the Dreadnought, so I instead ended this segment right before the Thunder Gigas.

Which makes Segment 59 be quite a bit harder, cause I'm doing the Thunder Gigas at the beginning, and then going all the way to the end of the tower. 8F and 9F were harder to flee on than I remembered, but I got through it faster than I expected. The Thunder Gigas is a pretty luck reliant battle. I use the Blink scroll so it won't 1 shot me with a normal attack, but he often uses Thunderbolt 12, which is an automatic 1 hit death. As long as it doesn't use Thunderbolt, or hit Gareth twice in a row with normal attack or Boulders, it will die. Unfortunately it took 4 hits instead of 3, but I got the last two hits back-to-back, so it didn't take too much more time, and getting through the rest of the tower without any Enemy Strikes Firsts was pretty lucky.

Time outside Mysidian Tower, after getting Ultima Scroll, is 2:00
Segments 60-63 are complete, which takes me through the Cyclone.

Segment 60 is pretty simple, there's just 1 sea encounter on the way to Fynn, then I get the Wind Drake and then walk to the Cyclone. I get another encounter on purpose before going into the Cyclone, so I don't get one immediately inside.

Segment 61 is Cyclone 1F to 5F, up to the Defender chest. The Defender will give Gareth and Leon maximum Evasion without a shield, and it will make the battles at the end of the Cyclone go much faster. After I get the defender I equip it, and equip 2 Blink scrolls on Firion and 1 on Gareth for the upcoming battles.

Segment 62 is 5F-7F right up to the Emperor's throne. Before I save I cast Life with Gareth to rez Maria and Gus.

Segment 63 is probably the hardest segment in the run to execute quickly. There are so many factors that can make these battles go fast or slow: how many royal guards there are, whether I get a pre-emptive or not, how often they attack, and how much damage I do. The segment I got recorded was not ideal, but unfortunately, my Playstation locked up after a soft reset, and I lost the memo file  Angry

It was not terrible, however, i got 3 Royal Guards Pre-emptive Strike on the first two battles, and it only took 1 turn each to kill them. Usually Gareth takes 2 turns to kill each one, especially in the first battle, before his sword level goes up. Maria and Gus also lived through the first two fights. Then the Emperor battle went better than usual, they killed Maria and Gus instead of Firion, I two shotted the Wood Golem, and the rest went down pretty quickly as well. The emperor landed slow on Firion though, so not as quickly as it could have been. What really sucked though was that Gareth got poisoned in the first battle, so he took poison damage every turn, which took up some more time. This will be funny though, cause now the screen will be flashing green from the poison the rest of the time that I have Gareth.

Considering this was the best attempt I got out of hundreds, I think I will keep it, since I would have to redo Segments 60-62 as well, which I don't really feel like doing. I don't think I could realistically shave more than 10 seconds off that segment anyway.

Time outside Fynn, after Cyclone, is 2:11
Segments 64-66 are complete. Getting close to the end!

Segment 64 I go watch Cid die, then I use Firion's last MP to warp out of town. I go grab the airship at Poft and then fly to Palamecia castle. I do I good job of not overshooting the castle, so in the next segment I can land right on it without having to move.

Segment 65 i go into Palamecia castle and run through to 6F. Not much to say here, 1F-5F are pretty easy to flee on.

Segment 66 is much harder though, because 6F-8F is a lot harder to flee on. I also have to do some fast equipment changes, which I suck at, so that ruined a lot of good attempts. One screw-up though actually made me realize a faster way of unequipping Gareth and equipping Leon. Instead of removing all of Gareth's equipment I just switch it out with the first item in my inventory, that I won't care if I lose. Then when it comes time to equip Leon the good equipment is at the top of the inventory. After equipping Leon I get in the Airship and fly to the Jade Passage.

Time outside Jade Passage is 2:20

Dumb question, but are you pushing B 3 or 4 times to make the airship go faster? * Lenophis hides

Also, your time is insane.

not a dumb question, I know nothing about this. I think it's too late to go back and utilize this now though  :-[

At least theres only two manual airship trips in the run.

EDIT: I just tested it, you actually only have to press O once to make it go faster, d'oh! I can't believe I didn't know about that Sad

Fortunately, the time saved would only be about 12 seconds total. Poft to Palamecia was 7 seconds faster, Fynn to Jade was 5 seconds faster. Going that fast would have made it very difficult to stop directly above the castle though.

At least it only works when you have control of the airship, if it worked during the automatic airship rides too I would be very upset.

Errr, yeah, I meant circle. I've had the SNES controller on the brain too much lately.

Once it's going you only need to push circle again to toggle between the two speeds.

All in all though, it sounds like you're still making excellent time.
Well I had finished Jade Passage in 5m11s, and was working on Pandemonium, but my PS2 locked up again, causing me to lose the memo file. It's probably due to overheating  Sad

So kind of a setback here, but hopefully the run will be finished by this weekend or sooner.
Clean the fan. it'd help quite a bit.

Just a small update:

Segment 67: All of Jade Passage

Segment 68: Pandaemonium 1F-2F

Segment 69: Pandaemonium 3F-6F

Im working on Segment 70 right now, which should be 7F-10F, saving right before the Emperor. Unfortunately, I have only gotten past 7F once. Theres 5 encounters on 7F, then 1 each on 8F, 9F, and 10F. It's looking like 7F might need to have it's own segment, and then 8F-10F, then the emperor.

I also discovered something I hadn't realized before. If I get a set of encounters that I recognize, and can predict if the next encounter is bad, if I attack once instead of flee, it will change the order of encounters from the next one on. That probably would have been useful information earlier in the run, but it may not have mattered too much. It matters in Jade and Pandaemonium though.

I think I know the answer already, but are you going for Iron Giants at all? I imagine not, since the potential reward won't be rewarding enough for the final battle. Still, never hurts to ask I guess. Grin
There's only a 1.5% chance of getting an Iron Giant on 7F, so if I got one it would just be a coincidence. I wouldn't be killing it anyway though, cause you can flee from it.
The run is complete!

I finally got through 7F without any enemy strikes firsts, and thats where Segment 70 ends. I don't know what I was thinking when I was planning on doing 7F-10F in one segment. 8F-10F was also very hard. Even though there was only 1 encounter per floor, it's hard to get a fleeable encounter on those floors.

So Segment 70 is Pandaemonium 7F

Segment 71 is Pandaemonium 8F-10F

Segment 72 is the Final Emperor.

The Emperor battle I actually got through on the first try, but I felt that I could kill it faster, so I redid it. The next time I was able to 3 shot him, and all he was able to do was Slow once, and normal attack once, which both missed. So the final battle was about 35 seconds.

The save before the Emperor was 2:31, but it was really 2:31 and about 55 seconds, so the Emperor died at 2:32:30. The final memory card save after the credits is 2:38.  This beats my test run time by about 38 minutes, and the Ultima Garden time by 22 minutes.

Now time to get the videos resized and compressed  and ready for verification!  Smiley
Bwahahaha... there WILL be domination!
Oh Em Gee...  totally amazing.

looking forward to seeing this hit the front page in an update once it's verified.

Congratulations, sir, I tip my hat to you and shake your hand.
Yeah, great job.....;o
I got sidetracked too easily and forgot about this extremely early on.....or I'm probably not that patient.

Either way, I could atleast try and verify it, as I'm looking forward to this too.
There's a word for that
Will watch this when it's published Cheesy
Well I've got a problem. According to nate, since I captured this run at half height in Dscaler, I lost half the frames, which will make the quality unacceptable for SDA.  I don't really know a lot about this kind of stuff, so I didn't think it was going to be a problem. I guess that's what I get for not learning about this before I finished the run.

The video isnt unwatchable though, I guess it's just not SDA worthy. So I guess if anyone still wants to see it, I will put it on YouTube at some point.

I am not planning on redoing this just to get it on SDA, I spent enough time on it as it is. Besides, the only way I could do it is if I bought a DVD recorder or a bigger hard drive. The reason i recorded at half height was because I didn't have enough hard drive space to record at full.

Really disappointed about this, but I guess that just teaches me not to finish a run before I find out if it will be accepted or not.
Damn, that sucks.
I'll watch it regardless though.....
