Make it so.
Hey there one and all and Merry Christmas to everyone!

Let's get straight down to business; as well as an avid gamer, I am a semi-professional composer. One of the things I love to do is arrange themes, particulalry from the 8-bit and 16-bit era, into true audio with sampled or even live instruments.

Since the SDA community are so awesome, I would love to give something back. Therefore if anyone has a request for a theme to be remade specially for them, then please post in this thread and I will see what I can do! I can't promise to have something to show within minutes, these things even at the basic level take a day or two (depending on the piece and the quality, one instrument is obviously easier than a full orchestra) but I would love to offer these as gifts for any SDA member who wants one.

As an example of my work, here is an arrangement I threw together recently, from the third generation Pokemon games: http://soundcloud.com/jameshartley-2/littleroot

Note: If you have any specific requests, such as the Hyrule Field theme for solo guitar or whatever, then again, let me know and I will do my best thumbsup

Ok I just checked that out on youtube and why the hell have I not played this game yet? That music is sickeningly awesome!

I'll see what I can do with this, it will be a fun one to work on but it may take a while as there seems to be a hell of a lot going on in that piece, lot's of layers etc so will be tough to transcribe.

Will you be wanting sheet music too so that it's playable or is it just the audio you want?

I'll have to find out what its called, but the credit music for Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction has a nice electronic feel.

I'll see if I can find the name and edit this later.

Found it, reposted below, but for the sake of future clarity the song is Nelson's "Let's Celebrate"

WOW.
I've always liked the melody from the ending screen of Dragon's Lair NES:

What are you using to make them? I currently use FL and Reason.

If you want to I'd like to help you since I'm studying classical instrumental composition as my bachelor degree and I'm directing myself toward video game composition for my master degree. Also, I'm currently in a lot of video game project so one more could be nice since I'll be practicing as much as I can until then.
Ack, found it, its Nelson; "Let's Celebrate"

That sounds pretty cool, any ideas about what you would like it to sound like? Piano and Violin could work quite well but I'm open to suggestions!

I use Logic Pro mainly but also use a thing called SoundLoom that my old composition tutor invented (he's a pretty famous contemporary composer called Trevor Wishart, check him out some time) for sound manipulation. I've heard good things about Reason and FL, I know a lot of the guys at OCRemix use them.

Nice, very Daft Punk. Although I'm not sure if I'd be able to do anything with this really unless you specifically wanted a completely different genre, like a jazz arrangement say. It's modern enough that it can't really be improved by someone with my limited skills sorry!

That's awesome, nice to have another musician around! Where are you studying? I finished my Bachelors in Music at Durham uni (UK) earlier this year, may go back to do a masters but I can't afford it right now. If you have any ideas for a collaboration project that would be really sweet thumbsup Do you play many instruments yourself?

I'm studying at UdeM(université de montréal)(Montreal university). For the numbers of instruments. I've start clarinet at 4, Recorder at 6(not at school in a serious way, concerto and everything), Saxophone at 10(for Stage band), Classical piano 1 year before entering my college(4 years ago) and I did my DEC in classical piano and also in jazz piano. After this, I realized that composition was my passion since my young age so I decided to go to university in this and I learn that I could do video game composition in master degree so I decided to mix my two passions. I'm also in the "lucky one"(lucky being a relative term since I've been working like 3 hours a day minimum since I'm 10) to have absolute listening pitch. My study in composition are specialized in Modern music(Prokofiev, Stravinsky, Bartok, Morel, Etc.) and analyzed of modern counterpoint. Sorry for my english mistakes since it's my third languages :S .

BTW, I use Finale2009, garage band and logic pro

If somebody wants a chiptune remix I could help you guys out although I doubt that will happen Tongue
(I mostly work with LSDJ on the gameboy)
Got no way to record guitar/piano so that is a no-go.
I would love a jazz mix, but I'm an electro/house guy primarily, so perhaps a more electro remix? The song as-is has very little reese and could be much more...aggressive Wink Only if you're interested of course.

Hmm, I've never really tried much electro stuff before but I can have a go, what's the worst that could happen right? And if that's a no-go then I'll jazz it up for you, particularly in a few days when my new mic arrives, the recording guitar, vox and the like will be that much easier Smiley

I would love to learn how to do chiptunes, is LSDJ any good?

Dude if this is your third language you must be insanely good at the other two, I know people here in england with worse english than you Tongue

That sounds awesome, kind of a similar story to my own except that I don't have absolute pitch so transcribing is a bit tougher.

Jazz piano is amazing, I'm mainly a guitarist myself (also play the violin, bass, drums, clarinet and sing), I can bash out a few tunes on the piano (including To Zanarkand from FFX, beautiful piece) but jazz pianists always blow me away.
I would love a mix of To Zanarkand if that's also an option ;0 There's a super cool 8-bit mix of Jecht's theme (Otherworld) on utube which I quite enjoy.

I dont think this is the right topic to talk about how to create chiptunes etc.
Send me a pm with some contact info (assuming youre using instant messengers) and I'm gonna try to help you out.

Nice, we have a reasonable range of instruments and EXO can 8-bit things(also EXO, you know that I love you very much Tongue , do you think there is a way to record a typic 8-bit sound on every notes from A0 to C8 for 5 seconds each in a wave format so I could sample them on garage band :P.) no seriously, does your software LSDJ work on mac???

LSDJ runs on any gameboy emulator (you will need to buy the software itself though).
I use gambatte because it focuses on emulation accuracy.
You can download it here (including a mac version) : http://sourceforge.net/projects/gambatte/files/gambatte/0.5.0-wip2/

Oh, this is fitting.

Can you make a version of the NES Metroid Title theme that doesn't suck and still retains the feeling of the original 8 bit.

Preferably with a harp.

I would love to, one of the best game series of all time? With music to match? Hell yeah. Hopefully this one shouldn't take too long either, I have some nice harp samples already Smiley
I assume by feeling you mean atmosphere? Coz yeah, 8-bit feel with a harp isn't the easiest thing to do haha Tongue although I can definitely give it the same atmosphere (I hope!)

Positive Force is going well, it's taking me longer than usual mainly because I'm trying to do it justice and make it interesting, I certainly wouldn't be able to play it as it is though!
Obscure games ftw

Will be a little bit tougher but no problem. It's only harder due to me writing it on the Piano Roll in Logic anyway so it's my own fault haha.

if you shoot me your midi I'll transcribe it on finale.

do you have a midi guitar to record on play.
Make it so.
That's the problem, I'm not doing it on midi, I'm using the sampled instruments. I could ship it to a midi channel then transcribe on Sibelius but it would need separating into both hands because of the way that Logic handles midi...
Main Work!!!
yeah give it to me I'll do it.(transcribe to the two hand separately.)
