Maybe this has been asked before, but:

The video files are large, and bandwidth can get expensive, so why not host the files as torrents? It might improve the download speed too - At the moment I'm getting about 20k/sec.

Never give up!
I think that's already done for SOME files within their first couple of weeks of being on the site.

But for ALL of the files all the time?  I dunno... I can't comment on that.  (I get fairly good download speeds from here, and I can't use BitTorrent most of the time because of my location anyway.)

It's impossible to seed torrents for everything. And yes I do often put up torrents for new runs that I feel will be popular.
Fair enough Smiley

you could direct this request at archive.org, they're hosting the files. If you want proper torrents with local seeding (i.e. torrents that won't die after a couple of days) they have to be tracked by them.

however, it seems that they have enough bandwidth and don't care.

I have.
Why do you think I said it's impossible?  Tongue

it could have been an "impossible for sda, but not impossible for archive.org". Wink

anyway, the more users request this from archive.org, the higher the chances. Or is there a specific reason why they hate BT?

Archive is not just a name, it's a word, with a meaning. Think about that, think about BT, and I think you'll see what I mean.
I get speeds of 60kb/s on this site when i have just upgraded to 1meg (so should be 110kb/sish) but my download speed is still slow on all sites :(. Torrents would be ok, but teh problem is seeders. If bandwidth is not relaly a problem keep with direct links and FTP links. Them seem to be workign fine Cheesy

People complain about downloading multi-segment runs but in this case it helps you.

Archive probably has thousands of active downloads at any one time. When you start downloading one file, you get your little share of their maxed out bandwidth. If you download two files at once, you get two shares. If you can get 4 files at once (some software is stupid and doesn't let you) then maybe you'll max your connection.

The reason it goes slow is because lots of people are downloading stuff at the same time (the fastest I've ever seen a download was 95 kb/s at 3 a.m.).

TIOLET!
I rarely have problems downloading anymore, I plan my downloads to when the majority of the american continent is sleeping (that would be around lunch time here in central europe). This help me reach speeds of 250KB/s per file, if I download in the evening when the american continent is awake I can barely reach 40KB/s per file. The tip for european visitors: download during lunch  Tongue
Speed is the key.

Thanks, I appreciate it.  Grin

Another tip: when possible, download from the HTTP and FTP links simultaneously.
Precursor
Yet another tip: Download via FTP client. (especially for multi-segment runs)
I was thinking the same thing. It's very frustrating to download high quality files when you're only getting about 20kbps.
MGS for PS1 forever.
Be thankful it's not 2.5k/sec. and don't bitch.
