I was watching some Quake speedruns recently, and I was wondering if they were tool assisted. I've seen some pretty crazy stuff in the runs, like in E1M3 where the zombie gets crushed in the door of the lift in order to escape the lift.

I don't consider myself to be good at Quake. In fact, I'm horrible. I haven't played the game for 10 years(at which point I was too young to understand anything), and just got back into it yesterday. I've tried running the shareware version, and my best time(according to the in-game timers displayed at the end of each level) is 6:05. I blame the fact that I can't 'nade jump worth shit, so E1M3, E1M4, and E1M5 all take me over 1 minute. =(

Anyway, I was wondering if there are any tools to make speedrunning easier. Like, perhaps, the ability to play the game at a highly reduced rate and then play it back at normal speed later? I know that SDA is a strictly non-tool assisted site, and I'd never even think about submitting a Quake run here. I'm mainly wondering for my own amusement, and I would like to try out some of the tricks I've seen.

Right now I'm using WinQuake.

The simplest thing you can do is set the variable host_framerate to something other than 0, for example 0.007. Just type [tt]host_framerate 0.007[/tt] in the console, and you'll be playing at half speed. Demos you want to send to SDA must of course be recorded with host_framerate set to 0.

The second tip is the grenade counter. It lets you time your grenade jumps better, by displaying a countdown clock to when the grenade will explode. Assuming you are using QdQstats (http://speeddemosarchive.com/quake/qdqstats18.zip), type [tt]impulse 210[/tt] in the console to activate it. The grenade counter is ok for use even in demos you want to send to SDA.

Technically using HFR would not count as tool assisted because it can increase the frame rate to above the maximum of 72, which changes the game physics.  I don't think there are any TAS quake demos besides the quake done quick projects, which are recorded level by level at normal speed and connected.  It would be interesting to see what kind of times are possible with TAS.
