A triple post, but anyway. I am going to restart the run because there are too many bits I am not happy with etc, plus I realise I could make much better use of the save system to avoid "mishaps" like the High Security complex (rather than only using a couple I can "loop" through the files so if I don't like a level run I have plenty of chances to decide whether to go back or not).

Make that a quad post Tongue .

My new India times are:

Jungle: 1:27
Temple Ruins: 15:58
The River Ganges: 3:17
Caves of Kiliya: 2:12

As you can see from the improvements it was a good thing I restarted, especially on Temple Ruins. I don't bother with the shotgun (or other items) this time as I realised it seems to do little against the boss unless you get right up to him. The Caves of Kaliya time isn't the best I've got (that was 2:09, but it went wrong). But shaving seconds off there is kind of difficult because of how even the smallest mistake can increase the time.

Medikits won't be a problem as I realised Aldwych has more medikits easily grabbed than I could dream of Tongue . The only ammo I have to worry about in any big way is the desert eagle, as 50 bullets makes the final boss VERY easy, yet I also need some more for one or two of the other bosses. The MP5 is also useful, but each clip seems to give enough ammo to kill a couple of things, meaning I only need a few for the whole game (which is again provided for by Aldwych).
Nice. Reallying forward to see this run. I never finished it though, I was that pissed at its savign system when I accidentally overwrote my latest savegame instead of loading. So When I loaded this savegame I jumped into piranhias and died instantly at that was quite far (at least for me) That was... damn... I forget the elvels name... at elast it was somewhere south, near the coast.
Whatever.

ps: on the top right of each of your posts, there's an edit button, maybe you can utilize it to avoid that many posts in a row. I'm always reading your posts, but well, I can't post on anything.
I look forward to see the full run. Tomb Raider 3 is the best one of the series and a game I have really enjoyed playing through. Good luck MMAN.

I normally don't mention my times until I complete a whole "chapter", but my Nevada time was 11:42. The thing is that this completely blows away the current twin galaxies time of 12:49. I plan to submit the run to twin galaxies anyway (from what I've heard there are no problems with sites "sharing" runs?), but I might submit this one to TG early as it is such an improvement on the current time. I guess it would be a separate category as I am using the PC version, but as I don't "exploit" crystals or anything in this level run I don't think it would make much difference.

My new times for Nevada are:

Nevada desert: 11:42
High Security Complex: 18:37
Area 51: 17:32 (edit: now 16:22)

I actually managed the re-run of Area 51 on the first attempt; the manoeuvres in that level are pretty easy and it focuses more on the combat.

Oh yeah, I've gone back to Xvid again, as I just found out about 2-pass editing, and using that Xvid can make consistently better quality videos than 2-pass in DivX, although the filesize is bigger (I have to choose a good filesize-quality tradeoff), but from the levels I've tested on a filesize increase is worth it for the visual improvement and faster compression.

Edit: I watched the video of the Area 51 run in detail and decided I didn't like it much, so I redid it to a time of 16:22

I'm uploading a few of the levels (Jungle, River Ganges and Thames Wharf) I've done as a "taster", the site I'm uploading to has a download limit, so you can only get about one per hour, but it's the only uploader I could find with a big enough upload limit (sending any more to archive I think is a bit extreme as they will end up there anyway and take about a day to be available). I will update this post as they are uploaded.

The Jungle link is:
http://rapidshare.de/files/4396054/T3jungle.avi.html

The Ganges link is:
http://rapidshare.de/files/4396872/T3Ganges.avi.html

The Thames Wharf link is:
http://rapidshare.de/files/4397922/T3Wharf.avi.html

These are the only things I'll upload till release, and the others have too big a filesize anyway (other than caves of kaliya), as I said, this is just a taster.

London is done, the times are:

Thames Wharf: 32 seconds
Aldwych: 17:55
Lud's gate: 16:03
City: 2:14

Thames Wharf isn't as fast as the twin galaxies times (25 and 28 seconds), however I didn't try to match them as I have to save at the start (which I believe takes around 4 seconds even when you do it fast), no save would probably have took my time down to around 28.

Aldwych is where I start to become a bit of a medikit kleptomaniac, but I want to be safe for later, and as I said earlier most of them are right in your path.

Although it didn't take me too many attempts Lud's Gate has undoubtedly been the scariest in terms of survival, the thing is that it saves quite a bit of its nastier stuff for later on, and there's one bit where a crusher gets me but I just manage to survive. I also use around five medikits (because of the underwater bit and the damn crocodiles, I also mess up and half drown as well).

In City you are pretty much forced to "speedrun" anyway, as you must find a way to kill Sophia quick, so there isn't much here other than an easily skipped monkey swing.
South Pacific is done.

Coastal Village: 7:11
Crash Site: 8:12
Madubu Gorge: 12:02
Temple of Puna: 4:32

On Coastal Village I found that the normal way seemed fastest (rather than the "skeleton key" way). There is some big (and very obvious) sequence break near the end but as I haven't played it for ages I'm not actually sure what the "real" way is Smiley .

Crash Site turned out to possibly be the most annoying level so far, the enemies bring a lot of luck to it; the T-Rex has an instant death attack (although I seemed to avoid this on my last several attempts) and the raptors can push you away from switches etc, at one point I shimmy and go a route that's about 30 seconds slower, but dodges a very luck based Raptor (it can push you off a ledge).

Madubu Gorge was one of my main worries for the run (in terms of single segments), but after I found a route it was like a relaxing stroll compared to the nightmare of Crash Site, my best time was actually 12:00, but I used about 6 medikits and didn't save at the end. The main timesaver is that on a couple of ladders you can shimmy left instead of climb left; I didn't do this on my final run however, and probably lost about 10 seconds to it. There is also another ladder where I believe you can do this; if it does work then a time of around 11:30 is probably very possible.

Temple of Puna was very simple, I do take a detour for the only secret as it gives you a load of desert eagle clips; enough to save for the end of the game and still have enough for killing the boss of this level.

Now just Antarctica to go, and Tinnos is the only level I have any worries about.
Great news man. Reading the last posts increases my interest even more to see this run now. A game that definitely deserves a speedrun. Good luck for Antarctica, you will do it!
Speedruns - 01
OMG that's NICE! Wiie, hope you'll have it done soon!

Still can't wait to see my favourite TR game done, TR2!
The videos were nice, but, could you upload them instead on www.putfile.com the next time? It doesn't force me to re and disconnect all the time.
Good luck on the remaining levels!
Edit history:
MMAN: 2005-08-29 10:31:57 am
I think when I checked it Putfile does not have a big enough upload limit (10 mb and that site I used is 50 mb). Which was my main reason for choosing that site.

It's nice to know that at least a few people are interested, as it gives some more motivation to finish up the run (not that I was thinking of giving up anyway Smiley ).

While I'm posting I may as well mention my time on Antarctica of 10:08.

The level mainly uses prior knowledge to be done quick (the order to use the valves). It was VERY annoying, not because it was hard, but because I had to redo it a few times. I did my first finished run of it (11:10) but thought it had too many mistakes, so I redid it to 10:30 but found the missing sound bug I originally had in High Security complex had affected that run. So then I had to do it yet again to this final time (which I believe is because I only just realised that the dingy had a boost Smiley )

MMAN: 2005-08-30 11:28:13 pm
The run is complete!

My Antarctica times are:

Antarctica: 10:08
RX-Tech mines: 15:49
Lost city of Tinnos: 20:09

the Final stats (the final level does not have its own individual stats):
Time taken: 3:08:33
Secrets found: 5 of 59
Kills: 122
Ammo used: 2507
Hits: 2220

I already mentioned Antarctica, RX-tech mines also turned out to be very annoying because of technical bugs etc, but it was fine other than that.

Like the rest of the "unholy trinity" (Lud's gate, madubu gorge and this level), Tinnos turned out to not be as bad as I thought it would be, although I had one real annoying death (I got past the hardest bits then didn't grab a ladder on a deadly fall so I suffered a pathetic death), I swore about 30 times after that Tongue .

Meteorite Crater was simple but I got annoying crashes with the final cutscene at least 2 times, so I just wanted to actually finish the damn level, a shame it does not have it's own stats, but I imagine that the time can be worked out from my final time.

FMV's do not record in FRAPS, but it continues recording while they are on, so I can just skip them and still have my stats as part of the same video (unlike how it seemed to be before).

My ammo provision came out pretty much perfect, the only ammo I had left at the end was 34 MP5 rounds, which is less than what a clip gives you. The MP5 became my main weapon throughout the run after Area 51, I underestimated how much ammo I would need, but it came out alright at the end anyway. I had at least 7 medikits left at the end, but I'd rather be safe than sorry Smiley .

LOL, 122 kills makes it sound like a slaughter, but there are quite a few enemies that get in your way too much to skip or are necessary to kill for items etc.

I just need to compress the last videos, then I guess I have to contact Radix to send them.
Yeah, well. I think if there'll ever be a Painkiller speedrun that could be called a slaughter, but 122 enemies. Not that many.
Looking forward to see the run, don't worry about sending them to Radix, his computer is running all day anyway (well I don't know exactly, but I pretend I do) and he sets up a nice ftp for you to upload to his pc. Very comfortable Wink
Looking forward to seeing this.

Any plans on doing another Tomb Raider run? Id love to see the whole Playstation1 series done.

I could try and beat the Tomb Raider 1 run (as well as having no mid-level saves), but I'm not sure how much the game likes XP. It would be annoying to try for the run on my PS version as on PAL it's like playing underwater (jumping etc is hugely delayed).

I could also do TR 2 but ammo conservation etc would probably be harder as a lot of the challenge comes from the amount of enemies, plus as I said I don't currently feel like facing the giant spider section, and since that is also the longest and hardest level I would probably have to go through it a few times Shocked Shocked .

I could do lost artefact (or any of the other "extra levels"), but Lost artefact does not let you choose a super-low resolution for some reason, so it would have to be recorded in "jerk-o-vision".

TR4 and 5 I just don't currently feel like doing at all (as I don't like them quite as much as the earlier ones).

I am currently uploading the videos and comments, so hopefully soon all that will be needed is verification.

I just noticed that the run is now on the "needs verification" list. Hopefully there is someone here that is able to.
I hope it won't take too much time to verify this run. Such a speedrun of such a game is a must on this Archive IMO.
Any progress on verifying?

MMAN: 2005-09-13 10:47:00 pm
I noticed that the run is off the "needs verifying" list, so I'm guessing that it will be done soon as long as the run is of a good enough quality (in terms of both the visuals and gameplay Smiley ). But as I don't know who's verifying or anything that's just a guess.
Cmon guys, why does it take so long. I really want to see this one as soon as possible.
give me your eyes!!!
Hmm I verifyed it (btw it kicks ass) but I have no idea how the system works. My lowly status and relative newness may mean that more verifying is required, but it'll definitely be on some time!

I don't think a run has to be verified by more than one person. If you wouldn't be trusted you'd never have gotten it in the first place. Anyways, if it really needs re-doing I could do that.
I'm addicted to games
The only thing holding it up now is two pictures and a cheesy intro for the game.
