I don't know if the guys at sda had something planned already, but I was wondering... What about another edition of the anual Quake speedrunning awards, a.k.a. The Nolans?

Since we haven't had one last year, it might have to cover demos from 2007 as well, separate categories or not, dunno.

Anyhow... Just wanted to know what others (the other half dozen people that check this forum =) think about it; and to say that I could help with all the work in it, like watching nearly a tousand demos to select a few nominees and writing a description page with coments, et cetera.

We wanted to do the 2007 show, but me and Nahk and Lag are experts at laziness. We procrastinated until it was too late to actually sensibly start the Nolans :P. We even had the nominees chosen, we were just lazy at doing the rest of the work.

I could bring up excuses about a bit too few demos and stuff like that, but the lack of being beaten with the motivational stick was the most important thing :).

Of course there'll be a 2007+2008 show, we've been planning that for a while. Not sure when though... maybe February-March? Thanks for the help offer, it's much appreciated, but I believe the three of us can manage the preparations :).

Those are fucking hilarious, thanks! I've never seen the older ones either (I remember when sshplur was rookie of the year, so 2004 and earlier). My absolute favorite is 2003 -- like 2002 but even better -- plus if you know anything about Radix. Cheesy

I'm sure Nolan wouldn't want me to spill the beans about all our silly conversations years ago... ;-)

But yeah, those statuettes are good fun. I seem to recall ending up with the task of creating a statuette for 2003, but failed miserable, so I went for the only alternative option I could think of... I changed 2 to 3 with my own crappy handwriting.

As a sidenote, Jesse van Dijk (retired Quake speedrunner) did the first two statuettes. He is a pretty skilled concept artist/illustrator, and he has worked for some gaming companies as well.

Ahhhhhhhh.  Such memories.  :-)

The original Nolans statuette was done by Will Marsh after I'd spent several hours trying to make one (and failing badly).  Probably still got the original somewhere just for completion's sake.

Then I showed it to Jesse and he came up with the one we used for 2001 10 minutes later.  :-)  (Was it this one or the 2002 one that CZG described as "homoerotic")

I will never forget how nervous I was in the hour before me and Stubby did the first IRC show.

Time to read the logs.
