Robin! Pull up your pants and get inthe Batmobile!
Let's start one. Some things that I as a n00b want to see are:

1.  Where to download/what to search for in google to get the full REEL version, and then how to set it up.

2.  How to record a demo.

And 3.  How to install new maps and play on them

Sorry if this seems bitter, but...

..Why not just put a link to the FAQ, Rules and Contact and Site Info sections and tell people to read instructions for a change? It's like a natural selection that keeps noobs away from here. Btw, the game is NOT "available" for free to download, you're supposed to buy it.

I believe Quake was made freeware or whatever many years ago. One should be able to download it for free, legally.

Stubby used to have to have a quake zip on a server, but I'm afraid that one is probably removed. Search for it on Piratebay or any other tracker and you'll most likely find it.

To record a demo, in the console type "bind [key] record [demoname] [map]"
For example: bind e record e1m1eh e1m1

To install a new map, just put it in the quake/id1/maps dir and typ "map [mapname]" in the console.
As far as I know they only released the source files. Even if one compiled them, he'd still need some media stuff. I may be terribly wrong about that though.

By "you're supposed to buy it" I didn't mean it's not there for you to download via torrent or that I think you should buy it indeed (it's ridiculous to have to pay for such an old game that was almost entirely released under GPL). It's id software that expects you to buy the thing.

Yes; the code is free, the maps, sounds, models and graphics are not. So buy it or warez it.

When I saw you'd replied to this thread, I immediately remembered that. Smiley
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
nQuake is the answer (comes with ezquake/fuhquake):
http://nquake.sourceforge.net/
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
This quide may also be helpful:

I forgot to add, that nquake contains ezquake = quakeworld (different physics), but you can also download a netquake client like proQuake (normal physics) and throw that .exe  into the quake directory that the nquake package created. I'd quess it would work like that with joeQuake as well.
