The hobbit is a 3d action based game which didn't do so well due to it kind of being bad for casual play. On the other hand it has several interesting glitches which would make a speedrun pretty interesting. There isn't a thread for this game so I think it would be a wise idea to gather all the information in case someone decides to commit to doing a run of this game.

Thread title:
Waiting hurts my soul...
Can you add (PS2/GC/Xbox) to the title? Just to make it clear which game this is about.
Yeah my bad, I forgot that there was a gba version. Though I believe there is also a pc version that is the same as the others.

I like this game a lot. I have played this for a little while now just messing about and found some cool skips and stuff. I dont know if i am able to post all of them but i will be uploading a few videos just in case someone wants to run the game. I think if someone really took time to do this, a really good run could be done.

Anyhow here is my reason for this post:
I managed to get almost to the end of the level with some clever jumps and clips, although the level ending trigger is not loaded or something. If there was a way to clip through the last door, or to find the trigger for the last cs, this would really help. I just want to upload this so that it is known.. But for now, useless:

The Clouds Burst:
This is route is pretty cool imo, i get out of bounds to skip meeting bard and gandalf.

The Gathering of the Clouds:
Pretty nice route to complete the required quests. No very crazy stuff in this one... Obv. If there was a way to clip through walls or something, the final key could be obtained faster OR if we could clip through the door, it would be possible to skip 90% , just dreams at this point...

Inside Information:
Not much to say really, the long jump at the end is cool

Nice route and that OoB in The Cloud's Burst is really neat. Yeah a clipping method would really do a lot for this game. Kazooie has a video where he clips into a rock by grabbing a ledge right beside it and jumping at the right angle and he was clipped inside grabbing the ledge. This was done on the first level, but it may be able to be replicated elsewhere.

My route for 'Flies and Spiders', skips the miniboss and a rather fast route. I pick up health and antidote potions for the spider fight( though not included in this video).

Somehow I ended up recording what I have for the first 6 chapters
Nice job, I'm actually surprised to see the first 6 chapters will only take around 23 min. Should be around 1-1.5 hours for a run which is pretty solid.
really interesting to see so much breaks in a game that I used to love. I have a question about version differences. So I'm guessing PC would be fastest due to loading screens but has anyone found any thing different between consoles?. Grin

Route for A Warm Welcome

also, there are two firewoods in Over Hill ... one normal and one oob 8)
This game is amazing for speedrunning, its completely broken. Completed it today on PC, and it is possible to glitch through the giant door to get the Arkenstone and skip almost the entire level (i did it today, on top of the door is a gap where you can get through). I'll look into this if i have more time.
I haven't played the pc version, but I belive it is more glitchy than the GC version at least. I remember trying to glitch through the door a while back, but no success(GC). A video of it would be very nice !

Getting up there is possible via one of the chains that are hanging around in this room (another bug). Doing that jump is necessary because you would die otherwise if you fall down all the way (in a run you would normally have a lot less hearts than me in the video but the jump costs only 2,5 hearts if done as show in the video). I need to find a way to skip the cube puzzle at the beginning of this level though, thats really annoying.

I started a page at https://kb.speeddemosarchive.com/The_Hobbit to help keep track of all the information we have gathered up to this point. I think it can be easier to keep track of stuff.

Also new stuff:
New route for An Unexpected Party:

A way to skip the block puzzle in The Gathering of The Clouds:

I played The Hobbit yesterday again and found a few cool things.

You can skip the Dream World fight by doing a jump attack to propel you into the trigger to finish the level:

You can store the bridge mini game through a death and then be able to control Bilbo and the bridge at the same time:

Barrels keep their x,y, and z positions, so you can basically make stairs in the middle of air with them:

If you switch weapons as you pick up a barrel, the weapon will switch, but then when you place the barrel down, it'll go back to the original without switching the icon. This also for some reason causes the rocks in your hand to attach themselves to Sting if you do the switch from Sting to rocks:

The skip is the only useful thing that I am aware of, but the others are neat none the less. The barrel staircase may be applicable somewhere in the game, but I can't think of anywhere myself.

I also almost found how to skip getting the dwarves across in Inside Information, however there is an invisible wall stopping you. I was planning on using the teleport glitch so I can set my position to be behind the trigger, then jump to somewhere where I infinite fall, and then get placed behind it. This would work, as I've got it to place me inside of the trigger, however there is an invisible wall blocking you, at least from what I can tell Sad
Nice skip for the first level. I was able to do that OoB jump to the black arrow in Laketown (amazing find, aceprune). I managed to glitch myself through a few doors, through the bridge puzzle room (with barrel stacking) and then build another barrel staircase to get to the wine cellar room and get up the stairs and i was in the cider house.
However theres a problem: you still have to do almost all of the other quests in Laketown (the follow/sneak mission and two wearhouse missions), the only one you can skip by having the black arrow already is the mission with that old thief where you have to collect some stuff for him and learning  the order of the wine bottles. So after all i think that wouldnt be worth it, especially since carrying barrels is extremely slow.

Cool stuff! About the inside information stuff: the trigger required for completing the level is set when you push the last block I think, I tried to do the teleportation trick to teleport back up after pushing the blocks, but sadly the 3rd block always seams to sets a safe spot :/ I can teleport back up after the 2nd block though, but the trigger is not active at that point.

As for a Warm Welcome this is pretty cool imo ^^
Did the embedding not work?
Nice route Smiley It's good to see there really is still a bunch of stuff left in this game to be found.

For embedding you have to use the old embed code and then go in and add "http:" to the url, otherwise it doesn't work on the forums. A bit annoying, but oh well.

Hey guys i don't know why i took me so long to check for a thread on here Tongue Ive been running this game for a bit on PS2 (which i think might be the slowest platform)

I've manged to get a slight improvement to the basement skip here

Just want to say that GL i'll be posting more here and thanks to aceprune for the awesome runs and strats he's been posting
very nice, much easier and faster set up!

I've though a lot of the basement skip and I realized something new. Previously I thought it worked because the save point stored the safe point back at the start of the level, but it appears it doesn't. When you reload a save it RESETS your safe point to the start of the level, meaning at any point in a level it is possible to teleport back to the start of the level by reloading from a save pedestal, and clipping or fall oob. Pretty neat, though I havent found more uses for it atm, but some weird shit happens if you do it in a couple of levels:3 Be aware that by doing this does not load the starting area so usually if you're far into the level you'll just fall forever.

Also people should try teleporting if they want to find new stuff, like in barrels out of bond if there is a clip spot inside of the level it would be interesting to see what happens if you teleport outside when having the inside loaded.

Hi. I think you guys might be interested in this skip I found an hour or two ago. Took lots of testing to finally find a way in there, BUT I have no broken gathering of the clouds on a non PC copy.

Also, not related to actually speedrunning this game, I was experimenting in a level with warps, and found a hidden "beta" level. Tell me what you think of this also.

Quote from aceprune:

The one out of bounds is the one played in the cutscene. I have found in a few cases that they hide characters/actors for cutscenes slightly out of bounds of where the cutscene will take place. Another instance of this is the goblin hidden outside of the black arrow cutscene in warm welcome.
tl;dr I have found a wrap for the spider Bose fight, not sure if its useful yet.

Wow awesome skip for gathering of clouds I will defiantly add this to the run. Could you combine this aceprunes puzzle skip to make it faster or is the timing about the same?

Good find on the beta level, I found this myself a few weeks ago but I haven't been able to make a video, long story but I basically don't have my Pc so no videos from me for a while Sad also its nice to see the second half of the level, on ps2 once you get to the rope bridge the game starts lagging really hard so I was never able to explore that much so seeing the death mark bypass was cool.

Aceprune I did some more work on the safe spot warp and it appears sometimes the default location is accessible and sometimes it is not. For example in "overhill underhill" you can warp from the first dungeon area to the start of the game and you'll be fine (hint chests are easy to get clips on) however sometimes the start location is unloaded and you fall forever. This can be seen when warping from in the spiders cave in "flies and spiders" to the default location!!!

So yes big news there is a way to warp out of the spider Bose fight. Unfortunately it doesn't look that useful so far as it doesn't help, but I'm going to keep working on it as I hate this fight and its where most of my runs die.

Sorry for the wall of text, ill try and keep you posted on progress, also to the GC runners can you just time one of your load screens between levels and post, ps2 load times are rediculess so I'm wondering if we should be timing with or without load times included.
Can't remember my login and manged to spell my name wrong in the last post ;( oh well Tongue
Gotta go faster
