You'll need a modified copy of snes9x and a copy of the JP tales of phantasia ROM (NOT a translated version, it must be in japanese) (do not ask for the ROM, we can't give it to you). Once you have those, run the emulator, open the rom, and play the movies.
First, geocities told me my "hourly bandwidth limit" had been exceeded once during the month of December, hahaha. Not sure entirely how that's possible (1 download every 4 minutes practically?) but...
Now, on a more significant note, I have a couple questions. First, last time I was playing the SFC version, I was playing an untranslated version and when I was fighting Maxwell I managed to pull out some item that nuked him (literally) for 1000 damage. I have no idea what the heck that was, does anybody know and how I can get one?
Also, I'm thinking about parties for the future. Last time through the GBA version (a couple weeks ago) I actually coughed up the Meteor Storm spell book which I...never had before. I don't know what this is on the SFC version but it may change the problem I've always had in the past where Arche can't hurt Dhaos. Of course, maybe it's better to only have one caster, since the animations are fairly long and Chester gets some nice weapons. Basically, I know which party I prefer (on this version), but I don't know which one is more effective...
Hmmm....was the item Yellow Cake? Seems like a vaguely remember something about that being an item like the Mahjong Tiles ya can use in battle to do damage...but unlike the Tiles can be found early in the game.
Sefira and Sefira+1 seem to up you gold and exp gains by 10 and 20% respectively as well.

I think one of those 2 items actually doesn't work in the SFC version... the caption says it does, but it doesn't do what it's supposed to!
Some comments on your GF post, spineshark: You should try doing the trees with Lightning Bolt. The Demitel fight has always been the same affair for me... clear the field with magic, then push Demitel into a corner and spam slashes (like you did with the twim golens). If you're _right_ into his face, your sword "hits" him on the upswing rather than a downswing slash, and he can't react to it at all.
For Rune Bottles, you want one for the Scimitar on the ship. Use it to clear Ifrit's dungeon. Use Ifrit on Undine and Gnome (and Thunderblade, if you can afford it). Another good use of a Rune bottle might be the Hourglass->Chronoglass. It's possible to beat Gnome before he goes underground if you use a couple of Lightning Bolts, summon Ifrit, (have Arche cast whatever she has), and freeze him with the Chronoglass inbetween.
Just starting to watch your movies now... comments: movie #1: Boar fight. You ran back with Cless to his default "home base" a lot in this fight. Should be quicker to walk up to the boar and slash spam. In the 1st Golem fight later on, your base was too far from the Golem and Chester's arrows kept missing (not that they'd do much damage, but if you walk right up to the Golem, Chester's arrows can at least keep him from hitting you.) Spam slashing is about 70% weaker than jump attacks AFAIK, but the hits are very frequent, so...
movie #2: One idea that you should consider is taking the north path in the mountain. Lots of fights, but the EXP can be an investment to make some of the boss fights quicker. If you choose to do this, you'll have to take the Knight Sabre now. You'll have to use another sword for the Catacombs. If you gained some levels in the mountain, the damage you do in the Catacombs (sans KS) shouldn't be much worse. The cost of this is losing a few minutes fighting in the mountains. The benefits are you don't have to walk back to your house to pick up the KS from Morrisson's, and that initial increase in strength is permanent, so for all remaining battles in the game, you ought to do a few extra damage with every hit.
Also, I think you could have fought some of the LHS battles in the sewers. Slowly walking over to the RHS and then waiting a few seconds to escape might be slightly quicker, but you get no exp.
Btw, you do plan on buying some Jet Boots soon, right? I thought you could buy some in Euclid, just before you visit Uncle...
As you may have already guessed, I don't have lightning bolt. I don't think this is much of an obstacle though, since you're looking pretty right right now.
Ice Scimitar though doesn't seem worth it. Meia's the other boss who's easier on SFC (aside from the Golem twins) but it seems rather long and annoying anyway. Not that I won't think about it some more.
I watched Segment 1 again today, heh. It looked pretty ugly, although in my defense I think I must've been expecting that any second there the fight would end and it would be faster to get one more attack in. Also it's one of those bosses where getting in close and staying there is sort of hard, but that's not really an excuse heh.
Fighting in the mountains is sort of debatable but I think I'll go back and look at segments 2-9 (I think that's how much I have) again like that.
I've always bought the Jet Boots in Venezzia, but you're right. This is another argument in favor of fighting battles haha, since I only have 160 (50 short) gold when I get to Euclid the first time. Anyway I've been really lazy about running projects lately anyway. Although now that I've gotten all of the epic procrastination off of myself, I think I'll have more time to do stuff. Also some comments on the later movies would be pretty cool, if you have any, though they will probably get redone fwiw.
Yes yes... well I guess I should reword my question as: what happenned with this run? Did it get finished or are there any more pieces? If it's not finished and someone knows why, can someone please tell me what went wrong?
This version is terrible and I decided not to do it. Maur might do the SNES version some day, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
EDIT: ok so I decided to actually read this thread. I dunno, I could actually probably continue working on the SNES run but I think I was going to start over. It's pretty fun but the emulator run would never make it on the site.
In terms of the game? Probably, though I've never looked into it it's almost certainly not so fucking slow. I don't remember the game very well anymore but that can be easily remedied especially because I read some Japanese now.
On the other hand, I don't have access to a slim PSP or the game, and if I'm importing I'd probably consider going with one of the older versions, unless the newest one has some sort of significant advantage I don't know of (not that being potentially portable isn't an advantage, certainly).
The best thing about the PSX version is that I know exactly how long it should take. On the other side of that though, is that I am kind of worried that it involves things I would never know about, because even though the move speed is pretty crazy in that version and it doesn't seem as difficult as the original, that's still a stupefying time.
PSP Tales has a new game plus with X10 Exp and 2x Gald and whatnot, I got up to Demitel in 1 hour. (Got bored.)
detailed grade new game plus features(relevant to speedrunning): -Carry Items 20 (instead of 15) -Carry over Gald (is fun if your clear save has 10 mil on it XD) -Carry over Skills (Magic, Sword Arts and such) -Carry over Skill usage -Start with 500 xtra HP (all characters) -Experience x10 -Gald x2 -Carry over usage items (like Life Bottles, Orange Gummy;s and such)
the total grade cost should be somewhere around 5~7 thousand grade...wich is very low (I got more than 10 times the required amound of Grade >.>)
Maur told me he's defaulting, and I don't blame him. So maybe this becomes my next project.
Incidentally, I have a recording SNES emulator on my Mac now. So! Somebody watch this sloppy video of the beginning of the game and tell me if it works.
