My feelings on The Demon Rush
Game Page: Doesn't exist yet

Jeremy 'DK28' Doll's classic very easy run

Verifier Responses

Quote:
Link: Nice and clean. Nothing to comment.

Yoshis: Despite a few misses (The last blue one seemed to cause some trouble) another great one.

Fox: Again not bad. He hit you once but that isn't a big deal. You only lost like 2 seconds or so.

Mario Bros.: Mario really goes down fast. Great example of death abuse on Luigi.

Pikachu: Again great usuage of death abuse. Beaten in sub 3 seconds.

Giant DK: He nearly made it to the barrel after he escaped your grip but still a great kill. (Death Abuse)

Kirbys: Amazing. The best battle in the run IMO.

Samus: Was OK. The Big Punch Miss was the only real Mistake in the entire run.

Metal Mario: Just like Pikachu. Really good.

Race to the Finish: Good too. Yoshi hit you a few times but thats nothing major.

Fighting Polygons: Really good. You missed a few times but it's still very fast and clean.

Master Hand: Some annoying misses and a few missed smash opportunities but still good.

Overall: Accept it. Despite a few minior quirks here and there, the run is nearly flawless. There IS room for improvement but not very much.

This run was pretty well done and I enjoyed most of it. I wasn't really sure what to expect of this run.

I really enjoyed the DK suicide method being put into use and that's why I assume the runner chose very easy mode. The DK grab suicide tactic was used pretty strategically. Everytime it's used it's done very quickly and the opponent is killed within seconds.

I especially enjoyed the polygon team fight because it was very quick. This suprised me because I thought the yoshi team fight was pretty slow. The polygon team battle made up for that. I also liked the master hand fight, but parts of it seemed a bit slow.

The fights that I really disliked were the Yoshi team and Samus. These were definately the low points of the run. Besides those two, most of the other fights were pretty well done. Though, still a few minor mistakes on almost all of them.

I enjoyed the run, but I think there are a few fights that could be improved upon.

Overall is was pretty well done.

Decision: Accept

Quality (Capture)
A little fuzzy in spots, but otherwise okay. No audio problems.

Quality (Gameplay)
Link goes down without any resistance.
There are one or two Yoshi’s that don’t behave and cost him at least 2 seconds.
Fox goes alright.
Breaking the targets goes really well for this speedrun. He finishes the level in 2 seconds.
Suicides during the Mario Bros. fight to insure that Luigi dies.
Does the same thing against Pikachu and the fight only lasts 3 seconds thanks to it.
Takes out the Giant Donkey Kong with the same move.
The Board the Platforms challenge is so lame that the runner does his best to kill himself to avoid it. The quickest opportunity to get off the screen is 13 seconds though.
Team Kirby goes perfectly.
Over time, the challengers get tougher. It’s obvious with Samus because it takes quite a few hits to down her.
Uses the suicide move once more against Metal Mario to beat someone in 3 seconds.
Races to the Finish and only gets hit once.
Fighting Team Polygon (No doubt sent by the boss of the Engrish Dojo) all get taken out very quickly.
He misses two shots on Master Hand.

Timing
I’m going by the official timer here:
Vs. Link: 6 seconds
Vs. Team Yoshi: 23 seconds
Vs. Fox: 11 seconds
Break the Targets: 2 seconds
Vs. Mario Bros.: 9 seconds
Vs. Pikachu: 3 seconds
Vs. Giant DK: 6 seconds
Board the Platforms: 13 seconds 1 min 13 seconds
Vs. Team Kirby: 14 seconds
Vs. Samus: 16 seconds
Vs. Metal Mario: 3 seconds 1 min 46
Race to the Finish: 26 seconds
Vs. Team Polygon: 37 seconds
Vs. Master Hand: 39 seconds

Overall time: 3 min 28 seconds.

Importance
This is a great speedrun. Donkey Kong seems like the best character to use, especially with that carry-to-the-death suicide attack to take out tougher and more annoying enemies. Suicides don't cost any time by the way. I don't know if you'd even qualify that as death abuse. It’s obvious the runner has done a lot of research and beats a lot of the game’s randomness. In games like this, I count spots where the runner messes up compared to where he has to battle a random outcome. I don’t use that as an excuse, but if the runner messes up, he messes up and I count that against him. Here it only happens maybe once, and that’s during the Samus fight. So, there being only one real mistake, I think it’s clear this belongs on SDA.

Link could have probably been done one second faster by roll dodging to the left of Link for the second throw, to do a back throw instead of a carry and throw.
Verdict:  acceptable

Yoshi's could have been about 2, maybe 3 seconds faster if he caught all 3 each time.  In my opinion he should have restarted until he got it right, because it was so early in the run

Upon closer analysis of the Yoshi Team fight, it appears as though as many as 7-8 seconds were lost due to DK's up B when landing and sliding off of the platforms alone.  Possibly improvable as much as 9-10 seconds.
Verdict: practice this until you get it right

Fox cost him about 5 seconds or so:  there were a total of 4 throws:  a backward throw at the beginning, a pickup and walk throw after that, a failed grab, followed by a fox uair on him, to another backward throw.  If this was my run, I'd have done a rolling dodge to set myself up for another back throw, followed by a bair, dj to a dair for the KO.
Verdict:  It was really sloppy, and unacceptable for a very easy run, IMO.

BtT suicide was as fast as possible
Verdict:  Great!

Mario Bros fight: He wastes 2-3 seconds by not disposing of both Mario Bros at the same time.  What he should have done after he threw Mario off the cliff was jumped up to the top and grabbed luigi, and then walked and thrown him against the bottom of the blue slanted...thing on the right to pseudo spike him, then followed this up with using dair on both bros to ensure the double KO.
Verdict:  Redo this, please.

Pika was good
Verdict:  Two thumbs up

Giant DK was really quick...but the fact that he "wasted" 13 seconds total on BtP to be able to suicide probably made up for the speed in the Giand DK battle
Verdict:  Great on Giant DK, but, sadly, unavoidable in BtP

Kirby battle was good
Verdict:  Acceptable

2 very avoidable mistakes in the Samus battle.  Should have lead with a dsmash, then the two throws to a successful Giant Punch...could have easily saved 5-6 seconds
Verdict:  No excuse for this fight.  Please redo.

Metal Mario fight was quick
Verdict:  Great

Race to the finish could have been done one second faster by roll dodging past the bumper rather than waiting and jumping over it
Verdict:  Passable

Fighting Polygon Team went relatively quickly, and was much smoother than the Yoshi Team
Verdict: Passable

Master Hand fight:  Accuracy was a minor issue, and Giant Punch should have been reserved for the final blow due to recoil.  total time lost was about 6 seconds.
Verdict:  Not terrible, but not great either.

Timing:  according to my player, it's exactly 6 minutes 30 seconds from the control during link fight until the final blow on master hand, so 6:30

Overall verdict:  I say reject.  Simply because the run was done on very easy, I feel that there should really be no stages that contain mistakes that cost more than a second or two at most, save for maybe not always hitting all 3 polygons during that particular fight.  It was a good effort, and I'd like for you to polish this and try again, please.

One verifier wanted his comments withheld, he said the run was a definite accept though.

Decision: Accept

Reason: Aside from what one verifier said, this run was quick and fairly well-optimized. I can see why the rejection verifier wanted the run rejected though.

General Kong - Bullets and Bananas
Score!  You can never have too much Donkey Kong.    Grin  One question though, maybe Mike can answer.  Would this be posted regularly or be categorized as "death abuse".  If so, no big deal.  I just need to know so I can get back on it for a no death run.  Wink
My feelings on The Demon Rush
Yes, this run will be posted as a run with deaths.
General Kong - Bullets and Bananas
I'm on it, I'm running for no deaths.  I'm actually playing while I'm typing this.  Tongue
Why isn't the run posted as "with death-abuse"?
My feelings on The Demon Rush
Because I'm dumb and I forgot, even though I watched the run only a day before writing the page  :-[

That's how DK gets down.  Beating opponents into submission isn't enough.  Tongue
i prefer to think of it as a reference to wouter goes bananas.

Can someone explain this strategy please?  I don't see how it could work without incredible luck.

Btw, I agree with Mike.  I probably would have rejected it or been on the verge of if nothing else.  The Yoshi, Samus and Master Hand battles would have been easy improvements.  Also, you don't need to suicide to kill Metal Mario with one throw half the time, but I'm not sure where he could've moved the suicide to improve the run.  Fox maybe.

Yeah, I can explain.  I was slightly mistaken.  He wouldn't have had to grab and walk, but simply grab and back throw him into the bottom of that thing for a pseudo spike.  DK's grab range is large enough to not require a whole lot of luck while doing this, and it's almost a guaranteed KO even without jumping off after Luigi and spiking him

Oh okay.  But wait, wouldn't Mario make it back in the time it would take to throw Luigi?

About 90% of the time, very easy mario won't make it back simply due to stupid AI either using up B too fast, not using Up B fast enough, or not using up B at all.

Ooooh gotcha.  That was kind of what I was saying about Metal Mario, too.  Okay thanks.

I do my best.

BTW I think there are a bunch of great ones, but I don't remember which so you'd just have to find them yourself which is totally not worth the time and effort.

Edit: Oh yeah btw I added the "with deaths" thing.
