Maybe I don't understand what you are saying, but when you throw a shell, it is going faster than you.  How are you supposed to jump off of it?  I don't know if this helps, but for perspective, if you throw a turtle from the green switch blocks in a prun it doesn't reach the key box.  Thats how I remember it anyways.

Thanks for the site, it should help a lot.

And for the vanilla secret level I will explain it better now that there is a map... the entire level that is.
Jump up and grab the shell off the very first red turtle  in the level.  From there jump to the platform above him then to the green spring bouncer thing (right of mario is at right of 2nd ball from the wall if I remember correctly) and you get exactly enough height to hit the second one, and then land on the top of that upside down L that they are connedted to.  From there jump and bounce off the turtle under the 3 yellow blocks and hit the vine on the bounce.  Then stand at the vine and throw the turlte up, jump on the vine, and grab the turtle.  Then you can jump to the next ledge and open the next vine with the turtle, catch it, and climb the vine the same way as the other vine (pirhana plant?).  Set the turtle down on the left side of the platform left of the vine and get the spring.  Set the spring down on the two block platform under pipe A (right next to and below the two blue pswitch blocks.  Heres where I need help.  From where do I jump with (holding left the whole time) the shell to land on the spring so I can jump up, throw the shell at the ledge under pipe A, and bounce off the shell to get in pipe A.  the way I do it now takes a while because I have to make sure the right of mario is 2 pixels from the center of that dim star in the background (yes I am that close to the screen)

I am also haveing troubles finding the fastest way through castle 2 from door C to door D on the map from that site.

EDIT:  I have now deemed my turtle bounce from the right side of the gray blocks to get the key impossible... until proven otherwise.  Now I'm trying to find a super fast way through DP3... wish me luck.
Ok I tried vanilla secret 1, and here's what I have with the position. On the 2-block wide platform thing below pipe A, put the spring on the center of the left side. Then jump on the center of the spring with the shell, go straight up (no pressing left or right) and try to hit the bottom of the platform under the pipe with the shell as you're going up. This should work to bounce you up. After you bounce off the shell, then press left.

Thanks... if this works, then I will not have to worry about putting myself 2 pixels from the center of the shiny star... not a very accurate measure I'm sure you can tell.

Now if only I can get DP3 to work, I will be able to maintain a prun through virtually the entire level (although not necesarilly always making forward progress... it would still improve my current best time of 247 remaining)

And I see people talking about PAL version and stuff like that.  Does that apply to this game?  If it does I hope I don't have to take the cart out of the snes because then I'm going to have a hell of a time making it start again...

You know what PAL is right? It just means your game runs at 5/6 the speed of others. If you live in Europe, you have it. But runs of it are still taken, so no worries.

No I did not know what PAL is, but I don't live in Europe so I shouldn't have to worry about it.

And thanks for the tip on Vanilla Secret 1.  It helped a lot... now I never miss that stupid shell  Smiley

Now back to DP3... I know there has to be a way...

EDIT:  Could someone please confirm/deny if Mario's max jump height while in a prun is random within a certain range?  I think it is, and it is really holding my back on a trick I want to do to save time in DP3.

I managed 251, but I think I might be able to improve that even more... wish me luck.

Now I got it up to 254.  It is a good thing there is nothing hard before this because I think this and DP4 are going to pretty much be the deciding factors as to wether a run passes or not.  But I still think I can improve this level a little more... time to go see.

And after pretty much 5 hours strait of Mario... this is how my head feels :hit:    That music and bright colors really gets to me after a while

I have to get some sleep and probably won't be able to play again until TUesday afternoon.  Soteos if your emulator counts frames could you please see which is faster?  DP1 just prun the whole time and stay above ground (never slow down) or prun to pipe A then jump up it (kind of tricky to do, but you do have save-states) and then go out pipe A to end at pipe B and then bounce off the cape guy to land next to the flower then jump up above the flower (that spits red balls) and get a prun back as soon as you can (the soonest I could get was after the second flower but I thinnk it could probably be done before that) and then finish.  I need to know which would be faster, I have no stop watch and using the second hand on a clock was not very accurate for me.

OK.  On DP3 I got a time of 258, and it is based on timing, not luck (no max jump height variation involved).  I also think (based on soteos idea of coming from the left) that it could be possible to beat the game without the green switch palace.  That means more trials for Star world 4, and maybe some experimenting on DP1 to see if I can get the secret wihtout any powerups.

Well, I can't do frame by frame. And it seems I suck majorly on DP1. But I timed it and I believe the pipe method is a bit slower. I would recommend going for whichever method is easier, but it's up to you.

Also, I forget, why can't you use the switch palaces? Shouldn't be any problem as long as you stay small, and they count towards a full completion, right? Or am I missing something?
It's been a long time since the begining of this toppic, and I forgot about some of the guidelines of the run.

Do you have to remain smalll throughout the whole run?

I will remain small throughout the whole run, don't collect yoshi, hit no half-way points.

Switch palaces are allowed, just if I can beat the game without them it will be that many levels faster (one or two +palace) which will cut time out.  As I have said before, I want to complete the fastest possible route through the game.

And if the pipe method is slower (which is what I saw with my inaccurate timing) then I will not use it because it is harder.
Oh I think I get it, so it's like the 70-star m64 run for smw (with the inclusion of being small).
Like A Fox
I guess you could probably say that... but I never watched the sm64 runs because I never played the game.  I only watch games that I have played because I don't get the same entertainment value out of things that I don't understand.  I could watch his triple-wall kick or whatever it was and I would probably just think, "oh he practiced a lot" and that would be the end of it because I wouldn't understand how hard it actually is to do.
give me your eyes!!!
Nah it's the throwing himself off cliffs or in the face of utter destruction quickly and consistently for an hour.
Watch it anyway!!!

I'm trying a different approach for Star World 4 to beat it without switch palaces.  Still involves two turtles, still on the right side, but I think it has a better chance for success, and since school was canceled for the next two days, I should have plenty of time to try it out.

I also found something in Yoshis Island 4 that looks pretty cool, although as far as I can tell there is no time difference.  It is not that hard to do, so I will throw it into the run just for kicks.  I found it trying to get a shortcut that would save time, but that didn't work out.

Is it possible to wall jump if you are not in a p-run?

I meant jump while in a p-run and then jump off the wall you collide with.  Yes this is possible.

I was wondering if wall jumping would work if you were not in a p-run when you jumped to collide with the wall.
Like A Fox
Would wall jumping even be allowed?  I was thinking in the third room of castle 2 I could wall jump off of the right side wall and get up onto the first left moving platform so I don't have to wait for it to go all the way across and then come all the way back.  I haven't succesfully done it yet but I think it should be possible and with practice it should become easy.

Also for future reference, would the jumping through the stairs in the ghost house trick be allowed (will not be used in this run)?
I'd think most glitches would be allowed, if they are possible on a normal console.  If you can do them, why not.

Oh yeah, too lazy to log in to reply to just 1 post...

I have figured out how to open up the key box in star world 4 without switch palaces and still be up top (not fall to my death), now all I have to do is figure out how to get down to the key.  Since I will no longer need the second turtle in my original idea to open up the key box, I was thinking maybe I could throw it at the gray block under the tree closest to the green pipe and then bounce off of it to get that extra little boost I need to get to the key.  I'm not sure it will work though because it would have to be done at or near the highest point in the jump off of the first shell and Mario falls faster than a shell.  Maybe I will get lucky.  If anybody could help me test this out I would greatly appreciate it.

I have another plan that I will test out if this one doesn't work.  I really hope one of these works because I'm beginning to run out of ideas and I think it would make this run really cool if I didn't have to get a switch palace.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
hey good luck on that dude.  i've been real obsessed with super mario world lately, so i look forward to seeing this if you pull it off!

I think I'm just going to start recording this weekend, and get a video as good as I can.  Then once I have that done (could take a while) I will continue to test if star world 4 can be beat without switch palaces (or just 1 switch palace) and if it is then improve the run before submitting it.

So where can I buy a blank tape?  A hobby shop, or maybe Wal-Mart?  (I don't want to go on a wild goose chase to find a blank tape only to find there is only one store I can get it at, and since I've never bought one before... I wouldn't know where to do it).
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
blank tapes aren't at all hard to find.  wal mart should work, i usually just buy mine from a local department store.
PwNzRd!
Let me name a couple stores for you: Safeway/King Soopers/Wal Mart/Target/Just about anywhere.

Ok thanks, I'll check it out.
