Quote from Caveberry:
Wow, I think that might have been the most epic choke I've ever seen in speedrunning. You were almost there!

...

Just out of curiosity, how long have you been attempting SSs?

"epic choke;" lol, love it

I started practicing individual Stars in January of last year. I tried to play about 1 or 2 hours a night, but I sometimes took breaks if I started to feel burn-out setting in or if I got busy with other stuff. I started making recorded attempts this past January.

1 death @ Galaxy Generator...again

Sorry, guys, but I think I'm going to have to settle for this. A deathless run just isn't happening for me.

Like my previous run, I died during the infinite flutter shortcut at Galaxy Generator, though the death was somewhat less costly this time. Sweet Mystery's Comet Star still sucks too, and the mistakes during the Digga-Leg and Gobblegut fights look pretty bad. Altogether, I think there are about 2 minutes 3 minutes worth of mistakes in this run. (Edit: looked at the run again with more scrutiny. Additional time can be saved with better strategies. Land cancelling with the camera alone could probably save about 30 seconds to a minute.)

I wish I could keep working on this, but I don't have as much time as I used to, and I'm feeling ready to move on. I hope this is good enough for now.

Well, I thought the 3:18 was already looking more than submittable, even with the death at the end.  I know I was making all sorts of silly mistakes when I was doing SMG1 marathon practice, so I know how hard it is to optimize a run this long.  So I have serious respect for you for getting this far in optimizing SMG2, and I'd have no problem seeing this 3:17 on SDA. Smiley

Gonna make time to watch this run soon.  Really appreciate those detailed comments and annotation links, by the way.

%&W#B(B%&(A%)W&%(W&(W&AF(T&(TV&TP(&TPFSJFLJAWE@*()GSGUAWGA&{}GFGU

ZOMG MUST WATCH NOW

Also. who cares about that one death. If the entire quality is good, and the death isn't at the beginning, whatever. I'm sure this is submittable Smiley (goes to watch right now and drool at how one of my favorite games get broken)
Thanks for the feedback guys--this is the first speed run I've ever done, so I really appreciate it.

I found this glitch a while ago, but I can't think of a good use for it. The Galaxy Generator example in the video is extremely difficult to do, and it doesn't even save any time. The last example is just to show that Mario gets stuck if you try to jump outside of the planet.

I call this v.2 because akheon and Kazooie posted another way to cloud clip a long time ago:

shunkolar/klar has recently uploaded several IL runs:

Spin-Dig: Digga-Leg's Daredevil Run - 1:02.10

Flip-Swap: Green Star 1 - 0:06.16

Fiery Flotilla: Green Star 1 - 0:15.43

Fiery Flotilla: Green Star 2 - 0:17.05

Puzzle Plank: Green Star 1 - 0:05.08

Cosmic Cove: Green Star 1 - 0:57.51

Throwback: Green Star 1 - 0:09.68

Wow, that cloud clipping is neat.  I immediately thought of Sky Station - Storming the Sky Fleet, where it'd be useful if you could get through the glass somehow, but of course there's no cloud powerup in that stage.  Some situation like that would be the right idea though.

Also, didn't know Klar was doing ILs recently.  Nice to know people are still playing this game.

Does anyone do 100% SS?  What would be the time estimate on a good run of that?
Quote from mattBLiTZ:

Ecko65 did it in barely above 12 hours, but it wasn't SS. My guess would be somewhere less than 12 hours, although I imagine it can be better than that. 242 stars is quite a bit to get.

yeah i did a 100% run and less than 12 hours is definitely possible i think a good run should be about 10:30-11:30

idk if anyone is working now on 100% if i come back to this game then i hope to get a recorded run with less then 12 hours

Well, I don't know how seriously I want to attempt to fill the rest of the level table, but I'll try to get as far as I can, I guess. It'd be a shame to leave the table 75% done.

I think MAST3RLINKX's run of Fearsome Fleet was recorded before people started doing sideways infinite flutter, so I thought this would be a good candidate for an update. Plus, I knew this would be ridiculously hard, and I wanted to get it out of the way XD

Fearsome Fleet

Bowser Jr.'s Mighty Megahammer (1:46.18)

The landing on the Question Block went better than I expected Cheesy

Megahammer's Daredevil Bash (1:04.80)

Pretty much the same as above.

Green Star 2  (0:24.06)

I use Mario here because I can't do the beginning strategy as Luigi--he starts running a little too slowly. A perfect execution of the typical strategy used with Luigi might be a tiny bit faster, but it's within the margin of error and I like this strategy better Grin

Rightside Down

There are a lot of little ways these runs can be optimized. This galaxy would probably make an interesting choice for a TAS.

Breaking the Laws of Gravity (1:04.70)

Green Star 1 (0:52.51)

Green Star 2 (1:04.85)

I did this run first, so the second half isn't quite optimized. Still, I managed to get lucky in the first half, so I ended up losing only about 0.2-0.3 seconds due to strategy choices.

tl;dr - You can land-cancel with the camera.

Quote from yoshifan:

For the record, I checked Nicovideo again and here are the fastest 71-star runs I found.  They use real time (file select -> final "You got a Grand Star! message") instead of checking the letter at the end for the time; not sure how much of a discrepancy that creates:
3:23:09 by ねぐろ (neguro)
3:27:50 by 紺空 (konkuu)

Well, now I feel like an idiot because all that Japanese on Nico Nico initially scared me away from making an account. Little did I know that most of the sign-up instructions are written in English, and you can watch Nico videos without an account on Nicozon -__-  So I watched almost all of Neguro's run, and I'm sorry to say there are quite a few tricks in there I've never seen before.

Probably the most surprising thing Neguro did was the way he did land-cancels. By quickly entering and exiting first-person view upon landing from a Launch Star, Mario/Luigi can start moving about 0.5 seconds sooner. This works in both Galaxy 1 and 2.

To compare how much time this saves vs. land-cancelling by jumping, I did a test on the last planet of Yoshi Star. I started counting on the frame Luigi touches the ground and stopped on the first frame of his running animation:

    No cancel: 61 frames
    Camera cancel: 34 frames
Jump cancel: 35 frames (ends at touching the ground again); 32 frames for Mario

The main limitation with the camera is that it can't cancel the initial landing into a Galaxy. Jump cancelling backwards can also be useful in some places, as seen in Segment 9 of Yoshifan's Galaxy 1 run (Freezeflame's Comet Star).

Still, while jumping requires near perfect timing, using the camera is incredibly easy. A great application of this is in Spin Dig 1. You can easily skip the Toad Brigade conversation by entering first-person view, pelting the Toad with some Star Bits, then running away while he's stunned.

A couple of other tricks from Neguro's run that left an impression on me:

- The shortcut in Boulder Bowl can be done simply by long-jumping to the left from the top of the ramp and spinning. Mario can make this jump easily, so there is no need to switch to Luigi in a 71-Star run -__-

- In Galaxy Generator, he managed to land at the top of the pole at the end of the infinite flutter shortcut.

I saw a few other tricks that I want to experiment with, as well. Thank you, Yoshifan, for linking to this amazing run!

On another note, here are a couple of IL runs:

Yoshi Star

Spiny Control (1:06.31)

Managed to flutter directly to the boss arena.

Green Star 3 (1:09.88)

Turns out, Yoshi can bounce off a berry if you press B without pointing at anything. This makes the infinite flutter shortcut here a little easier. (Still stupidly hard, though.)

That camera cancel technique is awesome news, since using jumps to cancel landings was probably the most luck-based part of running Mario Galaxy (particularly ILs).  There's still the landing at the beginning of the stage that can't be cancelled, as you said, but the camera cancel is still going to help a lot.

Also, amazing ILs!  Rightside Down makes me want to experiment more with backwards momentum in SMG1.
MrGrunz is a guay
So I'm finally getting back into running this game.

Right now I'm mainly practicing 71 star (though I doubt I'll ever beat nemi's run, I just want a decent time)and I might give 100% a try >_>  and I might do some more ILs and post them here.
^ Saw that IL live. Smiley

nemi, I just noticed you've organized and added to the General Tricks section of the SDA wiki page, including adding a lot of helpful information on the infinite flutter.  Really good stuff.

Speaking of the wiki, I'd like to update the information on the currently existing runs (adding your run and Neguro's, in particular), but I noticed that existing runs are currently listed in both the Main Page and Run Routes page for some reason.  I'm thinking of re-organizing it in the following way:
- Rename the Run Routes page to Run Categories, Times, and Routes (or something like that).
- List existing runs in the Run Categories, Times, and Routes page only.  The Run Categories section of the Main Page will only have the basic category definitions: what 71 star is, what 120 star is, and what 242 star is. (And of course, a link to the Run Categories, Times, and Routes page.)

How does that sound?  IMO, it seems like a logical way to split things up, since it makes sense to put a run time next to the route that the run used.  But I'm open to other ideas.
(Sorry for the late response.)

I think that sounds good, yoshifan. I added neguro, konkuu, Ecko65, and my runs to the KB and moved them to the Run Routes page. I'll update the routes as well later.

I noticed you guys were talking about the 71-Star route and the late game Comet Stars. These are the Stars in question:

    Beat Block C = 0:45 (31 medals)
    Starshine Beach C = 0:40 (28 medals)
    Gravity Gauntlet C = 0:55 to 1:00 (32 medals)

As far as I can tell, the best alternative Stars are:

    Supermassive C = 1:35
Boo Moon 1 = 1:40 (subtract 15 seconds for intro skip, but add 8 seconds for Mailtoad event)
Lava Lair C = 1:20 (this is approximately neguro's time, which was actually 1:23 because of a mistake)

When I compared these routes before recording my SS, I assumed 1:30 for Lava Lair C because neguro used a shortcut I was unaware of. The 10 second reduction in Lava Lair makes the difference between these routes less than 10 seconds. I also considered Tall Trunk 2 & C, but I found them to be a bit slower because Tall Trunk 2 triggers an event that places Mario at the bottom of the Starship.

A couple of ILs:

Hightail Falls: Green Star 2 (1:06.05)

On the second planet, it's a bit faster to go up the left side rather than the right.

Boulder Bowl: C'mere, Goomba (0:47.31)

Didn't mean to overlap with ZFG on this one, but I didn't know he was playing when I started practicing this Star.

I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Has the galaxy 2 strategy wiki and IL table been completely scattered to the winds? It seems to have been replaced by a random string of Dutch for no apparent reason. It's a shame if all that was lost, it was handy info to have on hand.
I fixed it. All I did was go back to the latest version in the history before the strange text was added. Smiley
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I don't understand high level stuff like 'wiki editing' and 'the Internet', so I appreciate it.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
On the subject of momentum, I just had a ridiculous freak thing take place during the Tox Box Speed Run star. Well, not ridiculous in the sense that it doesn't gel with all the other momentum tricks in this game, but it was a big damn surprise. I was screwing around with the Luigi ghost for that star, and I arbitrarily long jumped right onto a tox box and off it again. Not sure where the stars aligned for that to work since I didn't intend it, but it rocketed me like a madman basically to right in front of the star. I'd say the distance and speed were probably comparable to the switches in Flip-Swap. I know with thwomps, whomps, and everything else under the sun providing their own super jumps this is hardly shocking, but I'd never seen it discussed or used. Tox Boxes are so specific in the Galaxy games I can't fathom how it'd be useful, though. I'm not sure if any applications from those in the Stone Cyclone would be comparable to just straight long jumping with Luigi, especially where I specifically triggered it, since that entire section is a long jump and some timely spins/wall-kicks away from skippable. The two applicable Toy Time stars involve switches in relatively close proximity, so long distance shortcuts would be useless.

At least it felt rad.
I know people have messed around with Tox Box boosts in SMG1 (here's the first such video I know of), but we never found a way to actually save time with it in Beach Bowl or Toy Time.  Not sure if people have tried to save time with it in SMG2.  But yeah, it is a cool trick. Smiley
Thought I'd post an update on the Mario Galaxy speedrunning scene.

- We have SMG1 and SMG2 single-segment leaderboards here: http://bombch.us/9V .  Timing starts on file select, and ends upon touching the final Grand Star.

- Live-streaming activity in these games has been picking up, especially in SMG2.  The leaderboards' "Stream" column links to each player's stream page.

- There's an IRC channel for Galaxy speedrunning discussion: irc.speedrunslive.com, #galaxy

- Nemi's still occasionally making (awesome) SMG2 IL videos at http://www.youtube.com/nemi43
