Yes, a cucco riding the ground.
I've noticed that you can gain a large amount of height by jumping while riding a moving platform up (same as the first game, IIRC). You can use this to save some time on the first Grand Star level by jumping off the Thwomp and over the wall.

I got this game this morning and it is simply great.
About the infinite flutter "Glitch" I dont think it is a glitch. It is meant to be that way. I figured the "glitch" out before I saw the video. I was like. hmmmm...?

But I am pretty sure this tactic will be used in future speed runs. I doubt I will get to do this game, though. Little on the tough side =/ =P

I don't think you can climb up slippery slopes in this game like you can in SMG. Too bad. Sad I did find a few more small timesavers, though. In the second Grand Star level, use a long jump at the beginning to skip killing the Magikoopa. Grab the double health mushroom and long jump off the platform leading to the Toad Brigade and you can skip the Hammer Bro. fight by bouncing along in the lava. In the second star of Flipville/Fliptown/whatever, you can use a series of spins and walljumps to skip using the drill before you enter the warp pipe.
O_o
(This post contains a potential level spoiler, but you really shouldn't be in a speed run topic and expect spoilers to remain hidden.)

I have some new stuff if anyone is interested.

04:24.30 - Bowser's Big Lava Power Party

01:26.78 - Return of the Whomp King

01:44.00 - The Puzzling Picture Block

-----

Bowser's Big Lava Party was uploaded awhile ago, but I like to share in bulk. Just as Manocheese said, you can skip a large portion of the second Grand Star by using the mushroom. I had only thought of using that a little after uploading the video, so in a few days I may revisit this star to touch up the "whomp corner" and add the second lava bounce. (And some standard corner cutting.)

The remake of Whomp's Fortress was a decent run. There are so many beginnings you can use. The fastest is probably to long jump onto the pink Bob-omb, hold A for height and land on the low ledge. Jump, wall jump and spin up the wall. I could be wrong, though.

I'll have to play with that infinite Yoshi flutter very soon.

This is more of a general question than a speedrunning question, but how many Comet Medals does one have to collect to unlock the comet appearances in the stages? I've seen a few medals laying in plain sight (Cosmic Cove, Rightside Down, and Bowser's first castle), but some of them (like Sky Station) are out of the way, and so far I haven't seen anything that said "hey, a comet's unlocked, go get it" in the game yet (I just unlocked World 3 and I have 17 stars and like 6 comet medals, maybe 7).

I picked up this game today and played it for a little bit ... seems good so far Smiley

EDIT: here's a run of the very first star ... Peewee Piranha's Temper Tantrum in 2:00.33

i'll come back and get under 2 minutes later, but for now i think this is a very good run.  1:58 is probably possible ...

Yes, a cucco riding the ground.
In "To the Top of Topman's Tower" in Space Storm Galaxy, you can skip a decent chunk of the tower by using a triple jump+spin+walljump+spin at the bottom, then walking up a ledge. You can then get up the rest of the tower quickly by using the vertical boost from a Thwomp.

EDIT: In "The Ledge Hammer Trap" in Clockwork Ruins Galaxy, you can jump directly to the star with a triple jump+spin+walljump+spin after using the hungry Luma launch star.

EDIT2: In "Time for Adventure", also in Clockwork Ruins Galaxy, you can get to the gravity switch quickly by jumping past the outside wall, then spinning, walljumping, and spinning. You can skip the spikes later in the level with a sideflip walljump. When you get to the part where you pound a block down, then climb back up, you can ignore the block and use a sideflip walljump to get up.

How many medals do you have? I'm kind of just taking shortcuts where I can and playing casually. I have 16 medals and 28 stars (just cut to World 3's castle, lol).
Best Ike In My City!
"And, even more so than the first Galaxy, the manipulation of perspective leads to the game's finest moments. In one galaxy, there are pre-determined gravity zones that Mario needs to get through. This involves running upside down, jumping "up" onto shifting platforms (each with their own gravity zones), and then through a gauntlet of Thwomps who are crushing you from the bottom of the screen in a very un-Thwomp-like manner. It's all very complex and intimidating...until you realize that because of your perspective at the start of the level, you can do a backflip on top of the blocks that border the gravity maze and simply run over the top of everything, dropping back in when you get to the Power Star"

possible time saver or am I misunderstanding something?

Just finished the game. I got like 11:35:57, which is awful. But I mostly was playing around with features and getting to know the game. Pretty sure I will do a run of this later this summer. Cheesy
For the single mission runs, I will be uploading them to http://www.youtube.com/toufool31 if anyone is interested. Probably not for awhile though.
Crazy thought.

What if the IL table for this game was a compilation? Like, everyone working together to create the best set of 120 times? That way, not only will it get done faster, but it will be an excellent basis for the full-game run.

That's not a bad idea, but we won't be able to do that until we do the original run. I wish we could do a "Mario Galaxy Done Quick" thing where we could pass save files...Between...People.

The idea of a compilation just got a lot crazier. XD

Or, we could unofficially keep an IL table here, keep the best times on the front page, and just not submit until the full run is done, but have it ready so that they could be submitted together.
Fucking Weeaboo
I think an IL table can be done for this game, as long as it's submitted together.  There's no continuity that I'm aware of to worry about.  SMG2DQ Team anybody?

Seconded.

Oh, I just thought of another idea. Maybe there should be a catagory for a NG+ sort of thing, or an alternate run that utilizes that star bit bank (since the bank can save bits between save slots). What do you guys think?
The Sonic Center has a subsite for Mario games (The Mario Center), which I assume will have charts for SMG2 soon - should be fun for casual competition and an easy way to track the best IL times Tongue

Also I don't see how that flutter thing could possibly not be a glitch especially considering how you can do some things that are clearly not intentional with it. I'm looking forward to experimenting and seeing how badly it breaks the game xP (only four stars in)

The idea of an IL SMG2 Chart is awesome, but will be hard to accomplish, especially with 120 stars T_T.
I have some new records, if anyone wants to watch them? Smiley

I WILL EDIT THIS POST IF I GET A NEW TIME so check in every so often if you want =)

I agree. It definitely appears to be a glitch to me and I highly doubt Nintendo intended for this to happen. This game looks to be more amazing than the first one. My copy probably won't arrive until the 26th. Trying to wait patiently with not too much success.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Due to some unforeseen financial trouble, I won't be able to afford my copy of the game until next month.

I dunno.  I just hope the game is worth the money.

Has anyone managed to make a level run utilizing the Infinite Flutter glitch?

Now a hit show on the CW
The answer to this question will be a bit of a spoiler, I guess, but do you still unlock Luigi when you get 120 stars with Mario? I ask this because you already have the option to play as him on certain levels as Mario, so it would be kind of a redundant reward. Also, it seems like Luigi runs a lot faster than Mario than he did in SMG1, so it would probably be worth switching to him on the levels that you can, even though it takes time to do so. I still haven't really figured out the point of switching (besides from it being potentially faster)...you unlock a ghost you can race against once you do so, but you don't get any reward for beating the ghost time.
No. Luigi is unlocked as soon as you beat the final bowser level, which requires 70 stars, or so I hear (I didn't pay attention to the amount of stars needed to unlock the final path block).
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Just how bad is Luigi's traction compared to Mario's? Maybe he can be usable in some levels to utilize jumping shortcuts Mario can't pull off.
