Someone finished 8-1 with Simon? It seems very hard due to the timer and the controls.

And I found a shortcut^^

I finished 8-1 with Simon, but I can't quite do 8-2. I got to 8-2 with Simon with no warps, though that shortcut below can be done with a well placed axe, or with Link's down-stab for that matter. The trick to 8-1 is to abuse the double jump, which you get back after landing on an enemy, and to axe the Pirahna Plants. Don't forget the star either, and you can end with 80 seconds easily.

Using the Axe with Simon is faster, and much more satisfying. Other possibilities are Link with downward thrust and Samus shooting down.

I also did 8-1 with Simon, unpowered. I still have yet to beat this or the first super mario bros.
What would you use to record a game like this?

Someone should really test the options and report back on what works best:

Camtasia? Don't know much about it.

From what I've found, yeah Camtasia or something similar is the only option. It's too bad something similar to Fraps hasn't been made for flash games. Maybe there's a Browser that can record? Someone should make that.

Edit:
Try these out, one of them should work...

ok I just managed a 76 with simon in 8-1 without any kind of boost. I used the star wich save me 6 seconds.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Back when I compared Hypercam to camtasia, the first was better recording Google earth's browser plugin. It had slightly worse quality but the animations were captured without issues, while camtasia was the opposite.
I beat it with Simon! Contrary to what I thought you don't need to sacrifice a power-up to get through the underwater stage. The power is much better sacrificed getting through Bowser.

Samus shooting down.

*bombs. They take longer, though.

If you are Zero Suit then it could be faster just shoot through the bottom.

For anyone interested, v1.1 should be coming soon, and it will be introducing Ryu Hayabusa.

The trailer for that is AWESOME.  Can't wait to play it as Ryu!
B+Left, Left, Up+B, ★

Looks like he'll release the update to this game on the 25th. Also, I'd love to see a speedswim of this game now.

The changes made add a nice touch.  For those who want a summary:

Mega Man is getting a more true-to-game jump, but to make up for this, he gets Rush Coil.
Samus has the option to duck (you turn it on via the menu)
Simon has flexible jumping (also turned on via menu)
Link has the ability to attack up and down, but on ground and in the air.
Bill has...NOTHING.  He's already too damn powerful.
The timer can be turned off, as can the music.  You can also play true to Mario 1 (no scroll left).
There's 5 difficulties, from Super Easy to Extreme.  Hard I noticed plays much like Rnd 2 of SMB1.  Mostly it seems to just affect what enemies appear and how much damage they need to take to die, though Extreme makes you a One Hit Wonder, no matter what power level you're at.

Also, CHEATS?!  I wonder if the "Swimming Bros" is one of those?  I wonder what else is in there.

And of course, there's a nice WHAT THE? cameo by Ryu at the end again.
This game flippin' owns... I'm probably going to speedrun it (someday)...
Everybody DANCE!
I need a change of pants after watching the trailers.

Check out what I found by the creator...

It's out.  A nice addition for us speedrunners is that you choose to "play as one character only", so you don't go though the character selection screen after every stage.

The save data is mostly the same, here's the full analysis.

----- Save File Info -----

Quote:
<smbc_save_data>331,328,77,102,46518,32,32,32,32,32,32,32,114,116,115,117,167,165,144,126,0,1,4,1,0,0,0,1,1,0,1,0</smbc_save_data>

#1 - World.  328 is World 1, 329 is World 2, 330 is World 3, 331 is World 4, 332 is World 5, 333 is World 6, 334 is World 7, 335 is World 8.  If you put something invalid, the game white screens when attempting to load the level.
#2 - Stage.  328 = Stage 1, 329 = Stage 2, 330 = Stage 3, 331 = Stage 4
#3 - Lives (Save file total - 68 = actual live total.)
#4 - Coins (Save file total - 68 = actual coin total.  167 gives you 99 coins.)
#5 - Score (Saved max seems to be 99999, which is in-game 99931.  So the save file score - 68 is your actual score.  However, you can go past 5 digits if you do it yourself.)

#6 - Bill (32 = Small, 33 = Big, 34 = Fire)
#7 - Link (32 = Small, 33 = Big, 34 = Fire)
#8 - Mario (32 = Small, 33 = Big, 34 = Fire)
#9 - Mega Man (32 = Small, 33 = Big, 34 = Fire)
#10 - Ryu (32 = Small, 33 = Big, 34 = Fire)
#11 - Samus (32 = Small, 33 = Big, 34 = Fire)
#12 - Simon (32 = Small, 33 = Big, 34 = Fire)

#13-20 - Controls.

#21 - Difficulty.  1 = Extreme, 2 = Hard, 3 = Normal, 4 = Easy, 5 = Super Easy
#22 - Many/One Character Mode.  0 = Many, 1 = One.
#23 - Current Character.  0 = Bill, 1 = Link, 2 = Mario, 3 = Mega Man, 4 = Ryu, 5 = Samus, 6 = Simon
#24 - Timer.  0 = Off, 1 = On
#25 - Tutorials.  0 = Off, 1 = On
#26 - SFX.  0 = On, 1 = Off
#27 - Music.  0 = On, 1 = Off
#28 - Music Quality. 0 = Low, 1 = Mid, 2 = High
#29 - Scroll Left.  0 = No, 1 = Yes
#30 - Simon Jump.  0 = Hard, 1 = Easy, 2 = Classic
#31 - Samus Crouch.  0 = No, 1 = Yes
#32 - Cheats.  0 = Disabled, 1 = Enabled

Cheat List Includes:
Level Warp
Invincibility
Infinite Lives
"Water Mode" (as seen in the trailers)

For those interested, v1.2 is coming out this month...and a NEW CHALLENGER appears.

Blaster Master fans can now rejoice, as Sophia the 3rd enters the fray.  Possibly better then Bill?  We'll see.

Obscure games ftw
I kept trying to beat this game without warp zones.  My furthest was World 3-4 playing as Link (the only character I'm good with) the whole way.  The Cheep Cheep bridge level was cheap >.>

EDIT:Got Link to 7-4, couldn't beat it, tried as Ryu, beat 7-4 easily, beat 8-1 easily as Link, ragequit on 8-2.
EDIT 2 (12/8/10):I beat the game with no warp zones.  I spent the first three worlds getting every character fire powered (just in case), did EVERY castle with Ryu (except 8-4), mostly used Link and Samus (5 block jump!).  I died once on 7-3 using Link, so he lost his fire power and was not used again Sad and the 8-4 death was Ryu.  Samus destroyed Bowser.
Willing to teach you the impossible
Is anyone working on this? Or am I bumping a dead thread? Or is there another thread that is up to date?
I was considering doing a Simon run once upon a time, though i doubt anyone is working on this currently.
Everybody DANCE!
Guess what?  There's a new trailer for the game.  Sweet mercy!

SDA Apprentice -- (3-1)
First off, very nice that we are actually going to get an expansion on one of last year's most talked about flash games...

However, I do have to ask though...  If someone would attempt a speed run for this game, could they actually beat it in 4:58...

Ugh, the original was so terrible. Every character sucked except mario, and the controls felt off.
