When I was a kid I of course played SMB a great deal. Sweden (where I live) is a PAL-country so this was the version I was playing. SMB was also actually the first game than we tried to speedrun. Can't remember the time I got but maybe somewhere around 6.50?
One thing though, was two glitches I found that I haven't seen described are these:

1: That you are able to go under the flagpole at the end of  stage 1-1. I haven't been able to reproduce this in NTSC but I haven't tried very hard either. This is how I used to do it. I think (or thought) that you have to big Mario with fireballs.
Just where you appear from the warp pipe at the end of the stage there are two goombas moving towards you. If you waited for a while and jumped on the first one to make the other one change direction. Then wait for him to get back past the coin block. Then you run, turned while running, jumped, got the coin from the block and land on the goomba and pressing down or something. I can't remember what directions and when I used to press exactly, but this would get Mario stuck inside the first row of blocks in the floor. While crouching Mario would continue to slide under the hill and past the flagpole. You could at any time jump to floor level at any point to (if past pole) go back and catch the flag.

2: Slide though flagpole. This has only happened to me once. I landed on the very edge of the base of the flagpole and crouched Mario to slide right through the pole. If I remember it correctly I instantly lost control over Mario and he entered the castle with no flag ever dropped. I also think that there where some scrolling strutter either just when passing through or after the pole. Maybe this played a part in it? Haven't tried it in an emulator yet. Can't remember what stage it was..

Maybe this is just about me not knowing about well know stuff? If not, maybe this sound like crazy talk but I can assure you that this did happen.

Would be really cool to see a vidcap or if somebody could explain how can pull off the first glitch since I haven't been able to reproduce it!
