Thanks. That 1-1 is ridiculous...I can do the first vine glitch, but the second glitch is stupid hard. I think a perfect time would be 7:41 (7:44 by cork timing) while still using Luigi in 5-2.

edit: I'm dumb

From Aglar's explanation at tasvideos and some research of my own, it seems that the sand digging skip is not really a consistent manuever in real time. It usually requires pressing A after the previous digging animation, and letting go of A at a very specific time (within 2 frames, which is fine, but the starting frame varies according to an obfuscated variable in the game). Basically it sounds like a no go.
8:42 SNES warps run

I think 8:36 is optimum so this time is pretty good.

Wow, only 3 mess ups. 1-1 underground and 6-3 birdo were really impressive. Great run...also congrats on breaking your SNES lol

Bit of news regarding 3-3...I found a technique for achieving the same Mouser position every time. Just watch the jumping Ninji in the second to last room...they jump every 64 frames. And I've improved the movements in the fourth room so I can squeeze two early cycles out of Mouser.

Also, today I played from the beginning of the game to 3-3 (room 4) with no time lost on "research TAS" splits. That's nearly half the run, perfect.

You can do it!
Good luck with your attempts. You should get a good time soon if you keep yourself in shape.
By the way, if you haven't already received a Powerpak, you should order an Everdrive N8 from retrogate.com instead. Save state functionality was recently added, so I'll be getting one myself as soon as I can afford it.
I'll probably attempt to get the NES wr for a short period of time once I get it, but I don't really plan to focus on it. I just want to get some really good SNES times then move on.

I ordered the Powerpak on Saturday. It has save state functionality as well, though might be less refined, dunno. I've heard kinda bad things about Everdrive mapper support, but the price is tempting.

After sub 22 I will probably be done...would still like to get a perfect any% though.

I love the hype that's been built up in this thread. Bring it on and break this game to bits! :3

After doing some research on Power Pak I've brought the hypothetical time, with a few "easy" strats, down to an incredible 21:02. However I'm not sure when I'll be getting back to recording attempts...I've been kinda pushing it with gaming lately and really need to focus on my health. Sometimes I wish I was in my early 20s like andrewg, but I'm almost 35 and even though my playing is as good as ever, I can't sit down for very long periods like I used to. Sucks

22:25.3 new record, on my first attempt in weeks

I was on sub 22 pace until the end of 5-3, per usual. World 1 played perfectly, including 1-3 ninji strat. World 4 too.
HELLO!
Congratulations sir.

You can do it Cak! thumbsup
Hi, I am trying to learn Any% and was trying to do 6-2 the same way as in Cak's 8:32, but I am having trouble with the first set of jumps and getting the albatross to spawn right after the fire spitter. I tried watching the video to get visual cues for the double jump, but I have only been able to get the albatross to spawn once and I wasn't able to land on it.

Is there a certain movement that you do when you are above the top of the screen, or any advice on how to land this first section. Or, is this trick insanely difficult and not something that can be done consistently for most runners? Thanks.
Basically the Albatoss spawn is a (brief) left then right motion while being offscreen. It is difficult for most runners (jeffrosledger has tried to talk me out of using 6-2 double jumps in warpless attempts). I use one of the stars as a visual cue.
Thanks! I practiced it and was able to get it about 5 times. There are so many other hard parts I need practice on, but I am starting to figure out the ladder/vine/rope jumps, so that is a start.

An update on things: lately I've been practicing the hell out of the first 10 and last 10 levels of warpless separately, and have a segmented time of 21:41. I'm still trying to raise money for SGDQ, which has been alot tougher than anticipated, since I don't have regular access to good internet and can't stream very often due to prior obligations. I'm gonna try to do a couple special fundraising streams next weekend, since I will most likely be at my friend's for a couple days. I may offer up signed NES cartridges as a donation incentive. In the meantime I have a paypal button at my Twitch, if anyone is interested.

I'm looking forward to finishing warpless soon...it will likely be my last speedrun, unless I someday manage to get a sub 8:30 on warps.
Hi! I'm andrewg!
Looking forward to your warpless! Do you need some more competition to motivate you to keep speedrunning!? Cheesy I hope you at least keep in touch if you do stop, you're a great guy and you've got real talent with this stuff. Sub 22 is definitely a good goal, but seems very challenging. Good luck!

Thanks for the support Andrew!
I did end up getting a sub 22 (barely), here it is:

Actually, the WSplit time was 21:56.2. Lol at 6-3.

Yes
Cak, I just watched you run.  It's absolutely insane.  The Tryclyde death was unfortunate, but it only cost about 10 seconds.  I don't speedrun this game, but even to an untrained eye like mine the amount of time you've put into optimizing this really shows.  There's little things like the star pickup in 4-2 that just show how all out you go throughout the entire run and getting the potion jump in 6-3 gets me every time particularly in warpless.  I can't think of a compliment that fits so I'll just say that runs like this are the kinds of speedruns that inspire me to try and have some of that same dedication to my own games.

I really hope this (or this + warpless improvement) isn't going to be your last speedrun, even if it means that your next project won't be anywhere near as polished as what you've done for this game.  Still if it is, it's a tremendous contribution.  I wish you the best of luck getting to Summer Games and would encourage anyone who has some money to spare to chip in.

You finally did it! I am so happy for you and as always I really want you to submit! thumbsup

I really hope you can make it to SGDQ, it's the #1 run for me personally and I really, really want you to be able to come! thumbsup

Thank you mr. k and svenne for donating, and thanks to everyone for the support, it means so much (really).
I will do a fundraising stream tomorrow...probably with some warps attempts and something fun (maybe a little SMB1 or a Metroid playthrough). I will be giving away autographed SMB2 and Metroid carts to randomly selected donaters once I reach $100 and $200 respectively. (This of course includes anyone who donated already.)

I will probably still do casual streams after SGDQ, but I need to focus on my physical health and personal life, so speedrunning isn't so much in the cards for me anymore. I'm quite happy with 3 SMB2 runs, 2 Metroid runs, and 2 Atari runs. I have accomplished more than enough with this hobby, even though I'm not entirely satisfied with the warpless run. It easily could've been deathless, and with a bit more polishing of the later levels, I think I could get a 21:45 or 21:30. Still, if it's my last run, I do think it's good enough.
