I personally think Luigi would be alot faster in 7-1 though

Yup, I'm definitely going to use Luigi in a couple of places that tmont doesn't. I think he dislikes Luigi as much as I dislike Toad. Wink I bit the bullet and practiced a little with Toad last night and was able to get a 10:57. This run was riddled with mistakes and actually looks worse than my 11:15 run, but overall it was faster because I didn't use Luigi everywhere. I still need some more work on a couple of levels, especially 6-1. I did awesomely on all the Luigi levels though. 8)

You also got lucky that he didn't pop any vegetables.

Yeah, Wart almost always pops the first vegetable for me. I think there's a way to reduce the chances of this, but I need to do more testing to be sure.
An amazing run, some mad skills against those birdos! Definately worth the wait.

I think luigi would've been better in that level with the clouds though too. It's almost completely vertical.

How come the 'contributors' section at the end lists no levels for Peach, when you finished that ice level with her? Do warp-ending levels not count?

You guys do realize he said in his comments that he knows Luigi is faster in some levels, right?

And the digging wasn't that bad, heh.
Jungle Rat
Yeah, he stated his feelings on Toad and Luigi in the comments and earlier in this topic, but the fact remains that Luigi is faster on some parts so the point is bound to come up. I'm much more comfortable with Luigi so I'm planning to stick with him whenever Toad is only slightly faster. I've had to bite the bullet on a couple of levels though because Toad's speed advantage is much too great.

Thanks everyone! It's nice to finally prove to everyone that I was actually accomplishing something all this time.

Yes, I'm well aware of the advantages of Luigi. I've played 1-1 and 1-2 with Luigi, and I can comfortably state that you can play as fast or faster on those levels using Luigi rather than Toad. On 7-1, jumping over the pillar with Luigi saves probably 10 seconds, depending on your double jump skills, or if you choose the wuss method of power jumping off the snifit. Smiley The main reason I chose not to use Luigi is because I could never get comfortable with his floaty jumps, and I hated fighting Birdo with anyone but Toad.

Yes, 6-2 was interesting; you have no idea how many times I died practicing that level (but now I can do it in my sleep :)). I tried a few different methods, like using Princess to jump off the albatosses all the way across, but using her to fight Birdo took way too long. Toad just ended up being the fastest way for me to do it.

My Wart battle was the bomb. I've only been that lucky once before; I could never really figure out with any certainty the timing of the vegetables, and exactly how early to enter Wart's room. Radix thought that maybe my unintentional hit at the beginning of the level may have played a part. I have no idea.

And yes, actually, my digging was that bad. I HATE watching that part. Smiley As for the double jumping, there's only two spots where it actually serves a purpose in my run (in 1-1 and 1-2), and it probably doesn't save a lot of time in 1-2. If you're using Luigi, the possibilities are endless when you combine his big ugly jumps and the double jump. Most of the time, my double jumps were just for fun, because I think it looks cool.

Princess doesn't show up in the "Contributors" part at the end because she didn't actually complete a level: 4-2 is a warp.

For an "optimum" run, I think you should use Toad in 1-1, 1-3, 4-1, 4-2, 6-1, 6-3, and 7-2, and Luigi for every other level. It's my personal opinion that somewhere around 10:15-10:20 is the human limit. But I hope someone proves me wrong!
Jungle Rat
I'm shooting for under 10:30. There's no way I'll be able to get under 10 minutes. I played tonight some, and I improved my best time to 10:37 (taped). I don't think I made any major mistakes, but all of my later Birdo fights were sloppy.

I had a run that would have been 10:29, but I died right before Wart. Naturally, I had a perfect Wart fight after that with the early veggie and no pops.
Who's Making That Noise? Oh, it's me... >_>
I'm downloading the movie now, but, just to clarify, you did all 20 levels in ~11 minutes?

If you did than that's awesome.

He used warps. Did you happen to not read this once?

This run was awsome. No big noticible time wasters (hey, you dig better then I can), and fluid motion throughout. I was shocked when you pwned tryclyde with toad. That must have taken some balls. Smiley

Grade A+ run in my opinion, and on of the best runs I have seen this year, except for the Mario 64 run :D.

Thanks DK64, and you can attribute your praise for my Tryclyde ownage to KennyMann666. He gave me the strategy for Tryclyde; before, I just built a wall with the mushroom blocks and threw over the wall.

And thanks sdkess, for giving me three days of glory, before you completely shatter my run. Smiley Just kidding, good luck man. I can't wait to watch your run, after observing your mad mario skills in the past few years.
well tmont, I know what it's like to hear your run being beaten so soon, but I'd bet that people still have more regard for your run because there's a video available. not to mention that I don't think anyone has any doubt that you're capable of "bouncing back" if it comes to it.
Jungle Rat
I haven't proven anything yet so you still hold the honor of having the fastest run tmont. Smiley I credit you and Chico for inspiring me to take this game up again. I had mostly given up on it, but seeing other people play awesomely made me want to do the same. I wanted to get a 10:30 run long ago so it will feel pretty good to settle the unfinished business. I really just want to finish what I started last year.

Once I get a run that I'm satisfied with I'll do some capturing. BTW, I'm not using the double jump because I want to submit to TG as well.
Hi! I'm andrewg!
why do my NES controllers start to die on me, when sdkess finally beats my record. ahhh. i know i can get like 10 minutes.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Great run! I remember being almost that good when I played this when it was new. I couldn't get the double jump to work every time, unless I took a hit. It was totally nostalgic. I'm definitely looking forward to the next one.
Jungle Rat
I finished a 10:26 run if anyone wants to see it:

http://www.vortiginous.com/sdkess/sdkess-smb2-1026.zip

It's very solid, but there's still a lot of room for improvement. In addition to small mistakes and the omission of some time savers, my Wart fight was only average. Still, I met my goal of 10:30 so I'm through for the time being.

Three days, half a day, what's the difference? Roll Eyes

Anyway, downloading it know... lets see what these lots of room for improvements are...
Hi! I'm andrewg!
i need a new NES controller, i know i can get under 10minutes if i get lucky.

Hi! I'm andrewg!
scott after watching your video i am amazed at how close your video looks compared to mine, you do almost every single thing i do. basically your only differences from mine are
1. i beat you in the first level by about 3 seconds using luigi
2. you used toad instead of luigi in 6-3
3. you kill the first two birdos different than the way i do it.

are videos are soo similar!!!!

you think the same way as me on many of the levels. on 7-2 when you get the key right when you go through the door you threw the key at the two enemies, and thats exactly what i do. i think that if i send in a video you will be amazed at the similarities. wow!

Edit: one thing though... can you send your 10:26 to twingalaxies? you did a double jump by accident in the lest level. were you aware of this? will twingalaxies allow that?
I'm addicted to games
Nice run Scott... I time it to 10:25, even if I use frame 0 as the start. Tongue Do you want it on the site, or are you going to try more?
Talk to the Hand
I got it as 10:25 as well.

Anyway, an awesome run to be sure. One thing, I think the video now on SDA grabs the vegetable and flings it at Wart all during one span of bubble-shooting. Is this possible to do with Luigi, and you just didn't, or no? If it is possible, was it just a speed-for-risk choice you made in doing it your way?
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Very nice run, though 1 suggestion I have is not to wait for the explosion to go away in 1-1. If I remember correctly, the fastest way to do this part was to get hit by the shyguy, and then go down to the bombable wall while holding the bomb and go through right away, and since you just got hit the explosion won't hurt you also. If you want to see a vid of this, it was in one of the old TASs (I think Genisto's), so you can look on the nesvideos site for the fcm if you want.

That doesn't really matter mjf, because the birdos eggs are synced to the time from start of the level. The (faster) Toad version arrives just as birdo spits an egg, so possible improvements would have to cut off more than a split second to finish this faster.

If anything I'd first go for reaching the upper platform without a superjump though...

I do feel sort of like a heel for that, but I have to play when I'm motivated or I won't get anything done.

Sure, go ahead and put it on the site Radix! I'm going to put it on my site as well, but I'm very busy today and haven't had time. I'll get some comments done hopefully when I get home later tonight.

Andrew, I did accidentally do the double jump in 7-2 which does worry me a little. It didn't really benefit me and was totally unintentional so I think (hope) TG will accept it. Also, I was using Luigi in 6-3 as well, but after seeing tmont's video I decided to steal his Toad technique. Smiley

I don't think my Wart fighting technique is slower than tmont's. However, tmont was given the first vegetable much earlier than I was, and Wart didn't pop it like he almost always does for me... Even when I do get the early veggie, Wart almost always pops one during the fight.

Yes, I do know about doing 1-1 faster, but I can't seem to do it consistently. I got tired of resetting so much. Grin If I do another run, I will definitely make sure I do it that way.

One other thing to note: The video stops before the ending of the game totally finishes because I ran out of tape! Man would I have been kicking myself if that had happened before I finished playing.

Yes it does, of course it matters, saving a split second can save you just enough time to get there for the previous egg. I just tried it with Luigi with some save states and I got there in time for the previous egg. It would probably be hard on a real NES, but I'm sure it can be done, I was playing at 100% speed so it's not like you need godlike accuracy, you just need a pretty clean run.

Don't feel bad, man; that was my hope from the beginning: that someone better than me would get this done.

Or, more importantly, if one (or all) of you think you can do better, I thought I'd try and see if I can inspire some of you more experienced speedrunners to pick up where I've left off.

I'm also glad that you could use some of my tricks. That's worth it to me. I wish I could watch the run, but I'm at home now (not at school), so it will take about two hours to download it on my so-fine dial up connection. I'm sure it's awesome, though! Maybe someday I'll challenge you, but I think you're pretty close to the human limit, and I've had enough of SMB2 for awhile.
