I’ve gotten 9:34 in segmented times, so I know under 10 min is realistic. Just keep trying until that one near-perfect run comes along and it should be under 10. And yes, the whole sub xx:xx mentality is just a psychological effect (cup half full/empty), but it gives the player a worthwhile goal and the drive to accomplish it.

the key is to make them believe 9:50 is another magical barrier once someone has beaten 10:00.. then suggest 9:40.. 9:30.. until someone does 8:xx Wink

Hi! I'm andrewg!
personally, i dont think under 9 minutes is possible, the reason is that i usually get to the last level in a little under 8 minutes, and it takes about 2 minutes to beat the last level, i think it could be done in a little less than 2 minutes though.
MarioKart64.com biotch!
You just have to get there faster then you have more time to beat the boss and get under 10 minutes. DUH!
Hi! I'm andrewg!
the only levels i could really improve on is probably 6-3 and 7-1, other than that, it is nearly perfect. i guess i could improve on some of my birdo battles though. the best i could see anyone getting in one continuous run is about 9:40 or so. unless there is something i am not aware of that can save a lot of time.
Jungle Rat
Yep, under 10 minutes is definitely doable. My 10:14 was possibly on pace for sub-10 until the 7-2 debacle. I can still improve a few things in my run with a little practice. The biggest thing now is fighting Wart. If I'm lucky and good, I can save an enormous amount of time there. There are lots of "little" things that I still need to work on as well. If all goes as planned, I might be able to get sub-10 without a lucky Wart fight.

Right now I'm thinking that I'll be totally satisfied with sub-10, but I said that for 10:30 too, and here I am still working on it. Smiley Normally I stop playing when I feel like I've hit a wall and don't seem to be getting any better. I'm not there yet!
Hi! I'm andrewg!
as in "lucky" do you mean have the vegetable pop up right when you enter the screen to fight wart?
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
as in "lucky" do you mean have the vegetable pop up right when you enter the screen to fight wart?

Well I wouldn't really call that luck because it's just like Birdo, as far as I know the vegetables come out at set times.  I think by lucky he's talking about when the vegetables don't get destroyed by bubbles.
Jungle Rat
When I say "lucky" I'm mainly talking about being able to hit Wart with a vegetable right after you get it without waiting an extra attack cycle. This can be controlled to a degree by playing smart, but sometimes you're at the mercy of where the vegetable shoots out and what direction it goes in. It's also bad when Wart shoots his bubbles low. Even if this doesn't destroy the vegetable, you still can't hit him without waiting.

You can if you use Toad... Grin  His little tiny jumps enable him to hit Wart no matter how he shoots the Bubbles o' Death.  I think I did it once on my run.  But that was on here for such a short amount of time that it was probably too brief to notice Wink

I'm tentatively planning an all-levels SMB2 run (since it's really the only game I'm good at...), and I've had to learn to use Luigi's big goofy jump, which is difficult to get used to after using Toad so much.

I'll have to try that. Luigi was working pretty well, but when Wart shoots the low bubbles and is far away from the edge, I have to throw from really far away for the catch-n-throw hit which means I need to throw a bit high. This results in a destroyed vegetable almost every time.

Good luck with the full SMB2 run! I don't like doing whole game runs because it is too much work. Smiley

In other news, I just got a bittersweet 10:05 run. This run went pretty smoothly with no major errors, but I blew it on Wart again. I missed him twice. Angry The first was not really my fault, but the second miss was due to me being an idiot. Had I not missed those, I would have been comfortably below 10 minutes.

I want to get sub-10, but I'm starting to get frustrated now.
Have you tried timing your throws so the vegetables hit Wart the instant he opens his mouth? The vegetables pop out at about the same time Wart opens his mouth, but they won’t pop out while you’re still holding one. What I do is throw the vegetable while his mouth is still closed and then quickly run back to catch the next vegetable, which pops out a split second after my throw. The vegetable hits him the instant he opens his mouth, and I already have the next vegetable, repeat. If you land all of them, it should be under 45 seconds from entering the room to doorway every time, whether or not the first veggie comes right away. That’s about 20 seconds faster than in the current run and should be enough to push it under 10 for sure. You also don’t have to worry about the bubbles since he doesn’t get the chance to shoot any. You’ll have a clear shot every time, and you just need to concentrate on timing the throws.

Hi! I'm andrewg!
i throw the vegetable before he opens his mouth from in back of him with luigi. and sometimes i can get to the vegetable that has just popped up, if i threw it from in front with perfect timing, he wouldn't shoot his bubbles right? man, if i could beat wart in 45 seconds, then i would get a time a little less than 10 minutes i think.

scott, what time do you have when you reach the last level, is it about 8 minutes?

characters i use for each level
1-1- luigi (59seconds-1:00)
1-2- luigi- about 1:41
1-3- toad- 2:06
4-1- toad- 2:56
4-2- toad- 3:41
6-1- toad- 4:44
6-2- luigi- about 5:30
6-3- luigi- a little less than 7 minutes.
7-1- luigi- about 8 minutes
7-2- luigi- somewhere around 10 minutes

I'll have to try your Wart method Sleepz. It sounds easier, and it should beat the speed of my current method since you aren't wasting any attack cycles. When I don't mess up, my method wastes 2 attack cycles since I can only hit Wart immediately on 4 of the 6 first vegetables. It's rare for me to do this perfectly, and sometimes the low bubbles make it impossible.

Andrew, it looks like your time checks are for when you beat a level. On my latest run, I beat 7-1 at around the 7:47 mark.
Hi! I'm andrewg!
i was curious if you could give me a list of times that you have from your 10:05 run? that would be greatly appreciated.
Jungle Rat
Eh, you'll probably be better off just waiting for my next video. Wink I just got a 9:54 on a run full of small mistakes. I should be able to get around 9:45, and when/if I do, I'll make another vid.
Jungle Rat
Well, I just got a 9:44 time. I'm conflicted about it because I could definitely take another 5 seconds off... This was a pretty solid run, but there were still a couple of rough spots, and I failed to catch one vegetable on Wart. I'm fairly satisfied with this and am sick of playing, but I hate to quit when I know that I could do better.

The missed veggie was lame... It went right through me somehow. I think this happened because I was falling at the time. I didn't panic though and got Wart on the next one to finish him off.
Hi! I'm andrewg!
very impressive scott, i am not sure if i can beat your time, maybe in a few weeks, if i go back to playing smb2 again. i got kind of bored of it. did you decide to throw the vegetables at wart in front of him before he shoots his bubbles? i would really like to see your new video. i am hoping that sometime i will beat your record, but i'm not sure if i can, we will just have to see. good luck in improving your time.

Thanks Andrew, I might go ahead and do some capturing tonight. Before work I nailed down a 9:41 that was excellent aside from another botched Wart fight. This time I got the "way too early" first vegetable which put me one step behind in my fight cycle. I should have handled it right anyway, but in the heat of battle, I got confused and was caught off guard by a particular veggie later on and ended up losing it. I finished the fight off quite nicely though with a fantastic catch and final shot.

A good "early" vegetable and no misses would have been 6+ seconds faster. I made some small errors earlier in the run as well, but honestly it was a great run overall with a disappointing (but still good) finish.

Yes, I am throwing the vegetables at Wart before he opens his mouth and shoots his bubbles. I had thought of doing this early on, but I scoffed at it and forgot about it. I'm glad that Sleepz mentioned it because I had already written it off as not feasible. It takes great timing and concentration, but I find that it is much better than any other option. I get perfect Wart kills fairly often but never at the end of a good run. Cry
Awesome job breaking well under 10. But if a perfect Wart battle would gain you 6 seconds on 9:44, then I know under 9:30 is possible for sure now.
Jungle Rat
Thanks! I remember telling Andrew that 9:30 was out of range, but I was definitely wrong and agree that under 9:30 can be done even without the double jump. My 9:41 would have been at worst a 9:35 with an ideal Wart fight. There were still mistakes in the run, and I didn't do everything in the fastest possible way. With more effort, I could find those remaining 5 seconds and then some. Unfortunately I'm starting to burn out and need to take a break.

After all of my work to get a 10:55, this makes me think, in a strictly heterosexual manner, that you are one of the sexiest men to ever walk the Earth.  I'm impressed.  Good work!
i have been working on improving my smb1 full completion time. i am now hoping to get under 9:30 as well,  even though my best is above 10 minutes.  i think in a few days i am going to experiment on many things in the game to improve my time. i hope i get under 9:30.
Jungle Rat
Haha, thanks tmont. Your comment made me chuckle.

By the way, the 9:42 run is available!

I may try to improve this sometime in the future, but for now I'm satisfied so it's time to move on to something new.
