Willing to teach you the impossible
Original post by Frezy before I was given control
Super C is the second contra game known as Probotector 2 in europe. I never played it back in my young days becuse it never came out here in my country (Sweden). Sadly the music is not as good as in the first Contra game...

Annyways Tongue Is there someone working on the run or have been close to make a speedrun of it? I can´t remember discussions about this game. I saw AndrewG beat it in 14 minutes or so. Some good time would be fun to beat. I haven´t heard a record for this game. How fast can this be done?

I own the game and want to do a run for it. I practiced a little on an emulator two days ago. This run would not be very hard to do. Just some some random enemies can be a pain in some situations. I played the last stage over and over again and planned a good strategy running trough the first part in speed.

One question about the final boss. In the TAS he kill himself to save some time. It´s not possible to use that strategy without rapid fire, right?

The game is fun and I´m sure I will finish a run some time. Specially when it would not be very hard.

BY THE WAY:
I will try to buy Contra force from ebay in the future. It seems fun but the lag is terrible. Is the lag this terrible on the NES version or is it just the emulator I watched?

edit: woops  Roll Eyes Can someone move this thread to  "older consoles"

First off, I still hate this game.

But alas, I am not done working on it.

Weapons Run
I believe I can take a total of 3 seconds off my current time. I will be happy with 2 though. Just some small things that add up over the course of the run. Also found a few time savers that can be used from my no weapons run as well. And as time goes on, I might find more.

Stage 1 has a brief stop. Had to dodge a bullet in stage 2. Bad timing on my part in stage 3 for killing the guys following me causing me to stop to dodge another bullet. First set of falling bombs can be improved. A few climbing errors in stage 5. A very small position mistake just before the wall in stage 6. Stage 7 is awful... missed jump at the start, could have been more aggressive at the spider pods, boss can be killed in 2 mouths. Stage 8 threw me off because I got the F-Gun and was taken by surprise and cause me to have a stop near the start and I also missed a jump.

As I am typing this up, I think I can take some more time off, but we shall see.

Finished runs since this post:
1/28/11 - 13:23

No Weapons
I have a 14:31 run submitted and accepted (mike said it is a 14:30, but it is a 14:31). But the run does have a death. And on top of that, I have found a few new time savers. So, let us break this run down as well.

Stage 1 boss can be improved slightly. Stage 2 was great but as I watched it I found another time saver. Damn that red guy spawning right before the cannon in stage 3. Found a faster way for the falling bombs in stage 4, I was also trying out a new strat that does not save any time between elevators, and the boss can be a bit faster but I will take that same fight again. 2 missed jumps in stage 5 with a few very minor climbing errors. A few bad luck spawns in stage 6. Stage 7 was played too cautiously. Ugh, the death in stage 8 along with 1 missed jump.

I think at one point I set a goal time at about 14:20-25 or something like that. I am not gunna roll with a goal time for this run. I am gunna run this till I get the run I am fully happy with, regardless of the final time. But with how I am, it will be a near perfect or perfect run.

This run is my baby. I will not be disappointed with my baby...

Probotector 2
Yes, I want to run this game on PAL as well. Both runs as well. Putting out a call for help getting my hands on a CRT PAL TV. I can get the power adapters easy, PAL NES I think rather easy, and Probotector 2 rather easy all on e-bay. But I really need help getting this TV either borrowing or buying, I need it regardless. With the 60hz to 50hz, in theory I should be able to beat the game faster due to mashing. Thanks to who ever helps me get this all put together.

My feelings on The Demon Rush
I would love to do a speedrun of this game, but I don't have a working NES.  I'd love to see a run of this game.

About the final boss, you can just collect a flame shot, I think that's the fastest way to kill him on a console.

P.S.  I would move this to older consoles but I'm only a mod in general chat (hint hint Radix!)
Hi! I'm andrewg!
I speedran this game a while ago. I think the time was somewhere around 14 minutes?

Thanks! I will check this up.

No NES? Come on Mike. You gotta buy one!

Andrew: Why didn´t you recorded it? Maybe you can get a lot faster then 14 minutes but it sounds good. How fast do you think I can beat it?
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
What I do know is that this game is a lot harder than the original.  I know this isn't a speedrun question so much, but does anyone have any idea how to avoid the random mouth popup things near the beginning of level 6?  They pop up so fast and in such awkward locations that dodging or killing them is impossible sometimes.
bläää
I don´t know how to avoid them. If you are unlucky and got killed when you can´t do a shit about it... then it really sucks =/ If no one else answer I will report about it later. There have to be a way to avoid them everytime around.
My feelings on The Demon Rush
IIRC, those mouths are random.  You just have to get lucky  Cry
Hi
Hey Frezy_man, best of luck on your run.  I'm sure it'll be fun to watch.
I just finished my run of Contra and will send it to Nate in the next couple of days.   I've also started practicing a Super C low% run, just like I did for Contra.  We'll see how that goes.
bläää
oh, did you beat my 10:55 ?

I played some today.. The mouths is random but you have to get really bad luck if they comes up exactly were you are located. Moust of the time you can dodge or shot them down if you are fast even if they are very close to you.

And thanks for mention fire on the last boss Uyama. That save me some time. I´m ready to record a run now..

Hi! I'm andrewg!
I used spray the whole time. I think the last boss can be beaten in like 2-5 seconds.

Maybe I should attempt a speedrun of this right now. I think I will.

As far as I could see, the weird mouth enemies in Area 6 have a slight catch: you can take care of them very quickly when they're small, but they eat a lot of firepower when they're big. So, if you run in a straight line shooting like mad (preferably with a good weapon), chances of getting hit are pretty slim. I know with painful experience, since I used to adopt a cautious approach and always got owned.

And this game is still very good.
bläää
Da dood: yepp, I guess thats true. With very bad luck the mouths small form will pop up exactly were you are located though. And then you are killed =/

Andrew: As I can see Fire (F) Is faster on the last boss. You swith from spread/spray to "F" on the last stage ("F" is in one of the two last items in the stage). This way you can jump up closer to his eye. If you do that with spread your dead. You don´t have to shot many shots with "F". You should test it.
Hi
I'm pretty sure I beat your 10:55 time, but by how much I'm not sure.  Videos played with my VCR don't seem to sync up with those played off the computer (Windows Media Player).  Mike told me to send it in anyway.
bläää
nice. looking forward to see your time later then. I wonder how fast this game can be done. Maybe this give me motivation to beat the game even faster Smiley

Your average noob :)
hmm i got this - this was the first Contra game i played and i still gots it XD. I hope y'all know the charge fireball trick. You hold shoot then when you let go it splits more. I htink my best pass time is around 10-12 minutes but ive never really timed it. I got the probotector 2 version. how do you get a low% for this? I might try this after i get a contra:ss thing done.
Hi
Getting low% means you don't pick up any weapon upgrades or invincibility.

Since getting a Wii and being totally addicted to Wii Sports, I haven't spent much time on my Super C low% run.  I did a few practice runs before this and made the following observations, if anyone cares:

1) It's a lot harder to do a low% run of Super C than Contra.  Using the default weapon is a pain when enemies are coming at you from both sides.  Instead of constantly stopping and turning around, I jump right before an enemy touches me from behind and shoot straight down. This is difficult and sometimes impossible to do when there are lots of bad guys surrounding you.

2) Relatively speaking, the first level is one of the harder ones to run.

3) Level 2 is easy.  You can just run straight up the middle in between the red aliens and their bullets will miss.

4) Level 3 isn't too bad, except for the boss.  With such a weak weapon, it takes a while to destroy it.  Plus, since taking out those turrets wastes time, you have to be adept at avoiding 4 simultaneous bullets while constantly shooting its "eye."

5) There are a few set patterns that the bubbles at the beginning of Level 4 come out of those things.  In one of them, you can just run underneath while shooting diagonally up-right and come out unscathed.  I'm usually able to run under the first one without stopping but need to shoot all the bubbles coming out of the second before passing under it.

6) Levels 5 and 6 are really short and easy.  It sucks when one of those mouths pops up underneath you during a great run, but there's nothing you can do about it.  Praying to the Super C gods to make the path clear hardly helps.

7) Those spider pods in Level 7 are a pain, especially when you you're trying to save time by not killing half of them.

8.) The beginning of Level 8 is really, really hard due to the incredible homing capability of those red spiky things.  I recommend wasting a few seconds to shoot those mouths first.

The fire/fire ball is a good weapon time was. Moustly more difficult to use compeared to spread.

10-12 minutes on the PAL version (Probotector 2) Sounds impossible. I would like to see this run. I Don´t think you can beat the game under 14 minutes actually ( the PAL version )

No idea like i said. I dont exactly time it. If you say i can't do it under 14 then i probably can't. I might time it and end up with 15 minutes but i dunno *shrugs*

Is anyone still working on this? I really want to see a run on it, its much harder/more interesting of a speedrun then contra imo.
bläää
I got bored playing this game. I will probably pick it up someday. Hopefully someone do it before me Tongue
Hi! I'm andrewg!
I'm too busy with smb1 right now to attemp a run for this. I think I got about 15 minutes as my fastest though.
Hi
Well stanski, I'll assume you're curious about my low% run too (it helps my self-esteem).  Regretfully, I had to stop my attempts; my game got all junked up.  At each boss, the screen constantly jumps vertically to the point where it is now unplayable.  This happens on the vertical part of Level 4 also.  The game is only normal when it's scrolling to the right.

I'm hella pissed about this 'cause I was making awesome progress.  I probably would've completed my run a day or two after all this starting happening. It would've blown the pants off both of my Contra runs.

Before you ask, yes, I've tried every trick to fix my copy short of opening it up.  And no, I don't feel like buying another.

Shocked
Never give up!
As far as the spread gun with this game:  If what they're saying on the TASVideos forum is true, using Spread Gun actually would make the run slower in some areas.

What did they say about this, you might ask?

Quoted from the latest TAS submission (done by Baxter and adelikat) of Super C:
Quote:
If a boss is fought using the S weapons, he will have more HP (round 4/3 as much), so we didn't pick up the S. Instead, F appeared the strongest weapon.

Only trick as far as a console speedrun goes is the odds of surviving with the Flame weapon compared to the Spread gun.
