Suggestions for AGDQ 2017 Arcade: Possibly more shmups?

I ask because I feel the speedrunning community has at least some overlap with the shmup niche, even if it's a smaller subset and I feel a lot of people present would enjoy these games, particularly CAVE-made bullet hell games like:

Dodonpachi
Dodonpachi Daioujou
Mushihimesama
Deathsmiles
Espagaluda
Guwange

and the like. The Gradius series and soforth from Konami would also be a good choice.

Last year I feel like the selection of shmups was disappointing since there was only R-Type, which was on a non-original machine with a bad monitor and a horrendous joystick. It's not the end of the world if you guys can't make it happen, I know the arcade is a free bonus that's very much appreciated, but I think it would make it even better if you could include some of these games.

A lot of shmup fans attend GDQs, I'm one of them, I'll play a lot of any big bullet count shmup that makes it to the venue. They look really impressive to watch too.

I don't really care what is in the arcade as long as the machines work. Having 40 machines in an arcade is pointless if only 6 of them are playable.

f-zero is dead

What was with the Ikaruga machine at SGDQ? For most of the event it was a fighting game, then suddenly it was a wtf japan shmup, and finally Ikaruga made its appearance with only a few days left to go.

Also, don't let PJ near any Centipede machines ever again.

Basically, the machine was configurable and could be changed upon request. Someone requested Ikaruga, so it had Ikaruga.

I'll take the SHMUP into consideration, but we don't really have a large set of options. I too want to make sure we have as few broken machines as possible (Tokyo Attack is really good about this, their machines were almost always running fine), but some of the classics just require a ton of upkeep. MAGFest provided the old machines last winter for free, so I was not going to look a gift horse in the mouth, but I am letting them know that we'd rather have fewer, good condition machines than take a risk on some temperamental ones.

This. I tried a couple of machines at SGDQ and just gave up when they weren't working.

I'm all for this, but we don't need to do too much. One or two machines is the most we would need. Shmups seem to be enjoyed by many, but it's still a niche even in our community, so one dedicated setup would probably be sufficient (especially since it could support 2 people at once).

As a side note, if we get a multicab again, could we ask the arcade manager to post a daily schedule/game list for what they'll run on it? At least we'd know what's available and when it will be on. Also, if a game is getting no activity, we could ask them to switch it up. Or, if they don't want to run a schedule, they could just print out the list of games (or QR code to a pastebin link) and let people make requests.

That multicab that was running Ikaruga was cool, but Ikaruga was pretty much the only game on it that got any consistent play. Power Stone and the other game just kind of sat there for the first half of the week.

Anything will fit with a few Sawzalls and sledge hammers.

I mean sure the Hilton would be absolutely livid, there would be civil litigation and possibly criminal, but I mean we COULD do it. >___>

Just put it next to the pinball machines, it'll be fiiiiiiiiiine.

In all fairness though if some of the pinball machines that were in the arcade room were put somewhere else, there could maybe be room for one of those. I do remember there being quite a bit of pinball machines in the arcade room that were either unused or sometimes broken or turned off. At least this would probably get some use. Wink

Nope, the most widespread piece of false information about F-Zero AX is this: "You can play the full F-Zero AX arcade game on the GX disc."

Here's some of what AX-on-GX disc is missing:
- AX's physics and camera, demonstrated here - drifting physics are a total game changer!
- AX's different menu music and additional announcer voicing
- AX's race results screens
- (And obviously, the physical AX arcade machine and controls)

We can have the truck with flashing 4 ways on the entire time, a few people in front and behind as escort, and a banner that says "Caution Wide Load" across it and just put it on a flat bed of some type if it's too big for a vehicle. Or we budget for more than one trip. It's not like this is me with groceries where everything absolutely, positively must be carried in a single trip by myself even if I lose all feeling in my arms in the process because I refuse to go back to my car.

Because of sonikkustars reply, I just wanna mention I really enjoyed a good deal of pinball machines being at sgdq. I love shmups too, but you know... I can't play real pinball at home.

So, in my opinion, bring on more pinball!
