Well, I tried streaming some RFJ today and as a lot of shmups, height is longer than width. Rotating my screen is not a problem, but the result is not pleasantly viewable, because it will look like I go from left to right.

so is there an easy way to output some stream as e.g. 768x1024 instead of the usual 1024x768?
Preferably it should work with USB capture thingies, cause that's what I'll use.

Ok, I found one solution myself. Use Manycam, as it has two convenient buttons to either turn the pic clockwise or counter-clockwise.
Problem is, that thing needs memory bandwidth and CPU time again, which I don't have. Also, it seems dumb that such a simple thing needs to waste so much processing.
welcome to the machine
stremaning!

There's options in MAME.  I'm really not sure why it's displaying as left/right to begin with, rather than up-down.

I know there is options in MAME and they work a charm. But I can't use screencapture software with my rig, either performance or stability issues. So when using the TV out I am basically stuck with 4:3 or 16:9 in a rather low res like XGA. And turning my desktop in windows also does not work with the TV out.
Playing the game in the right orientation at XGA is resulting in a rather small window on a 16:9 screen, I don't really find that too nice and the resolution of this is also weak. Something like ~400x768. I can pivot my screen though and it's all nice.

Problem is then how to just turn the stuff i stream 90 degree? It would be so easy if a feature existed, because it doesn't even need processing time really, if implemented at the right point of the chain. But there is seemingly nothing.
