Mostly it is the kind of programs that use several connections at the same time for the same file. Personally I can't download a single file from SDA using Flashget (connection refused errors), but using Wget or FF's download tool is no problem.

You're right, but i have no firewall/router/proxy, so it's not the case...Besides, you couldn't download any video from SDA if it would be because of this.

You deserve to get owned really bad.

Newbies these days Smiley

BTW, Flashget rules. It does not have problems. If there is a problem, you're it.
don't see why you need a firewall if you don't run insecure garbage like windoze.
No, I have plenty of hard drive space...

I have no firewall and never did.
All the ports on my router are open to my computer.
I run windows.
I also have no spyware or viruses ever.

What's that I see in the distance?!  Is is a bird?  Is it a plane?  No, it's a great big hunk of bullshit, and it's comming right at us!

I also ran a four year old install of Windows 95 and then a 5 year old install of Windows 2000 for the longest time. Only reason my windows install now is just four months old is nate sending me a "new" computer back at Christmas.

Now why would I lie about these things huh?

To be on topic: The reason wget is what I recommend is that it never fails to resume and it auto resumes on the server connection getting peered. The default is to try 10 times but you can add --tries=0 to have it try infinitely. You can have the power go out in the middle of it running and you just rerun it with -c to resume. You can start downloading a file with some other program and resume it. I know no other program that lets you just resume a download like that.

The problem with those programs that download files in 4+ pieces and merge them is that the formats they use while downloading probably can't be mixed with any other program. Also they're very annoying to people running websites. I think dreamhost might be seriously overcalculating our bandwidth used because of such programs. I'm not sure exactly how they show up in the apache log but I think if you run it to split in four files, it'll show up as 25%, 50%, 75%, 100% of the file downloaded. Meaning it thinks we used 2.5x the bandwidth. I'm not sure though.

Of course with archive that doesn't matter and it does make their pitiful download speeds faster.

Yes, exactly my point.  I only use it if my download is going way too slow.  Dreamhost has really good bandwidth speeds, so it wouldn't be too useful.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I use GetRight, but I find that splitting segments when downloading from archive.org rarely helps - Instead of 1 20kb/s you get two 10k/s segments. Not overly useful.

Maybe something to do with my timezone in relation to the US.

All the segmenting in the world won't help when the pipe at the other end is maxed out though Sad

supposedly it does - iirc radix said each segment makes the download only 1 - (1/n) slower than 2x faster where n is the number of connections open through that pipe.

of course my math skills are crap so that could be wrong, but it makes sense to me. basically you are slowing everyone down when you get a new connection, but your download of a single file goes faster, because you are taking almost 2x the bandwidth from them.

Your almighty lordship
Of course, a smart administrator would simply deny obscene numbers of connections from the same location, especially a server that does not host webpages.

To be fair, it's not that wget being so awesome as much as Windows sucking too badly at file resume by default.
yeah, i've done that, but archive? don't see why they should care outside of being dos'd.

Get FlashGet.  It's easy to use, easy to install, and can multiply your download speed by 10.

FlashGet works perfectly downloaded Zelda: OoT HQ and no problem. I did however download Half Life 2 IQ and I had a problem everytime I would open it, it would come up with a message My Computer (needs to close) has crashed. It seemed like it was an incomplete download. Downloaded it again giving the instructions on drive E:\ but I couldn't find it, maybe it went to K:\ (previous download was instructed) don't know and same problem. I deleted it and I'm gonna download it again.

Also the speed is much faster than any other program I tried, even when I'm pushing the speeds that my internet can handle with other programs. Thanks a lot Grin
For Half Life 2, maybe it's a problem with not having the .264 codec instead of the run download.
