Fucking Weeaboo
I've been playing around with this game again testing out some times with Time Attack (Zone and Boss).

For levels, all characters I feel can be put on the same playing field, since all have the same running speed, jumping height, etc.  It's only their special abilities that make them different, but having Knuckles climb up a  wall or Cream/Tails fly somewhere is sloooow.

For bosses, Sonic, Tails, Amy, and Knuckles can be put on the same field, since it's basically running and jumping.  Cream on the other hand...for those who have never played, Cream is a rabbit.  She comes with a little buddy named Cheese (Creme Cheese...har har).  Fwap the B button and he goes screaming into the nearest enemy (usually).  So she can beat Eggman much faster.  This also applies to the XX Zone, since it's purely boss fights.

XX Zone and True Area 53 can't be accessed via the Time Attack mode, only normal game.  True Area 53 can only be accessed by Sonic when you get all the Chaos Emeralds.

Here's what I've got for times so far (all have been taped).  I'm looking for challenges:

Bosses (Main 4)
Zone 1: 0:20:32 (Sonic)
Zone 2: 0:27:12 (Sonic)
Zone 3: 0:20:83 (Tails)
Zone 4: 0:56:73 (Sonic) - I hate this boss
Zone 5: 1:24:70 (Sonic) - I hate this boss too
Zone 6: 0:14:43 (Sonic)
Zone 7: 0:40:92 (Sonic)

Bosses (Cream)
Zone 1: 0:12:18
Zone 2: 0:21:80
Zone 3: 0:20:50
Zone 4: 0:21:70
Zone 5: 0:24:47
Zone 6: 0:15:33
Zone 7: 0:26:47

Zones
Zone 1-1: 0:59:07 (Sonic)
Zone 1-2: 0:57:55 (Sonic)
Zone 2-1: 1:17:48 (Sonic)
Zone 2-2: 1:29:80 (Sonic)
Zone 3-1: 1:32:28 (Sonic)
Zone 3-2: 2:24:28 (Sonic)
Zone 4-1: 1:56:02 (Sonic)
Zone 4-2: 1:38:65 (Sonic)
Zone 5-1: 1:41:55 (Sonic)
Zone 5-2: 1:37:55 (Sonic)
Zone 6-1: 2:10:99 (Sonic)
Zone 6-2: 1:37:07 (Sonic)
Zone 7-1: 2:56:72 (Sonic)
Zone 7-2: (No time yet)
XX Zone (Main 4): (No time yet)
XX Zone (Cream): (No time yet)
True Area 53: 1:16:32

All runs played on Normal mode.  Easy tones down the bosses and removes some enemies.

I am using a flash cart, but it is not emulation.  It just allows multi-booting GBA games.  I do own the game, but I wanted a clean list of TA times.

All times above are taped and can be verified...but I'm looking for challenges, as well as thoughts as to which ones can be improved.  I'm sure Boss 5 can with the main 4...but that boss is HELL.  That boss' hand has a 1-hit kill, even with rings. -_-

Yoshi's eggs are at my mercy!
Challenges? Why not speedrun the game already? We've only got 2 lonely Sonic games on the SDA list! It's been too long since I played Sonic Advance 2 to judge on how well those times are, I'll assume they're above average; clearly enough impressism to run the game.

According to this table, all of the zones you did can be improved. I played SA2 a while back, so I don't know which zones are which. Names would be helpful.

Now that helps for starters.

Zones:

Zone 1 - Leaf Forest Zone
Boss: Egghammertank II

Zone 2 - Hot Crater Zone
Boss: Egg Bomber Tank

Zone 3 - Music Plant Zone
Boss: Egg Totem

Zone 4 - Ice Paradise Zone
Boss: Aero Egg

Zone 5 - Sky Canyon Zone
Boss: Egg Saucer

Zone 6 - Techno Base Zone
Boss: Egg-Go-Round

Zone 7 - Egg Utopia Zone
Boss: Egg Frog

Zone 8 - XX Zone
Boss: All the initial 7 (though each require less damage to beat), plus the final boss.

I'll check out the videos linked, and see what I can do to improve what I've got.  I've copied the tape into my computer...partially to weed out the good stuff and partially for all the outtakes I'm gonna have!  Grin

Eh, none of the videos exist, and their guides suck.  Good to see times up, but do they verify them?  Must investigate further.

There's only one guy I'd trust with this run, and that's NintenDan. He's the Sonic Advance authority and the champ at SAdva2 over at TSC - most of the videos are his too (and we're working on that still!).

I'm not sure if he's fully recovered from the Advance 1 run yet, but we'll see.
Fucking Weeaboo
I've digitized my tape and am piecing apart the levels and pulling out a few outtakes.

I know I should do a full run at some point too, but later.  Doing a full game run while getting all the chaos emeralds would be hard...given some of those bonus stages (especially #6, it's hard to combo in that one).

I'll keep working on this one.  Right now, I've got quite a few on the levels separated and will make some type of access to them later.

Some of the outtakes are quite hilarious.  ^^;;
A full emerald run could be good to watch. Ive seen a video which I believe was NintenDans for Egg Utopia which got all the Sp.Rings.  It was a very nice video. I would post it, but I have no idea where it is anymore.

For those boss times I know that at least a few can be improved upon. For Aero egg for example it is possible to do a spin dash jump and end up wedged between Eggman and the wall.  It is somewhat hard to do however, but it does knock the time down to about 9 seconds I believe.
Fucking Weeaboo
Aero Egg and Egg Saucer are definately my two weakest bosses.  Aero Egg especially due to the slopes affecting the jumping scheme, often sending me right into Eggman's bombs.

I can get all the SP rings, that's not a problem.  The bonus stages can be a bit tricky at times, primarily Techno Base's.  It's just a matter of practice.

Thanks for the tip on Aero Egg.  I'll give it a try and see how well it works.  I heard a similiar suggestion for Egg Totem (Jump before it sets itself) but it was noted for XX zone, which seems to give you a little longer time than time trials or the main game.  But we'll see.

Anybody who wants to see the runs in progress (what I have available) please PM me.  I have them set up on an FTP for downloading.

The following are available:
All bosses
True Area 53
Zones 1-1, 1-2, 2-1, 2-2

And some outtakes!
I always thought doing a speedrun of this game would be considered suicide

well...good luck  ;D. If you really get serious about this run, I'll gladly help you out in any way possible.

I realize putfile ain't the greatest thing in the world. I would put it up on TSC if it didn't have such a small file size limit :/

I was practicing a bit tonite at work using an emulator (so I wouldn't get my times confused with what's on my save in the cartridge).  I played as if I was playing for real.  I only did boss battles with Cream, but I did get a few improvements.

Zone 1 - 0:00:53 faster
Zone 2 - Did not attempt
Zone 3 - 0:03:82 faster
Zone 4 - Did not attempt
Zone 5 - 0:00:54 faster
Zone 6 - Was not faster
Zone 7 - 0:02:32 faster

Bosses 3 and 7 went really well.  I've got some great tricks for 3 now to try.  The "jump before it sets itself" will NOT work on Time Attack.  You can't get over fast enough.  But with Cream, I can get 2 hits in (thanks to Cheese) before it spits out its first wheel.  Then bounce off that and keep chucking cheese (not to be confused with Chucky Cheese :P) and he can go down fast.

Boss 4 and 5 are still my bane though.  I HATE THOSE BOSSES.

Edit (again): Further improved the time.

Sonic - Zone 7 - 0:06:95 faster now

Yeah thats it.  I probably said this before, but great video.  But now you have me thinking.  You say it be suicide to do a full run, for obvious reasons, and I can see why you would not do a segmented run, as those are already on Sonic center.

However, what about a segmented all emerald run?  Something like one segment per 2acts, special zone and boss battle.

I actually thought about that. Like Sonic Advance, you can choose what level you want to start from assuming you've already completed it. So your progress is saved. The problem though is that your score and lives reset to their default values (Score = 0 and lives = 3 methinks).

I don't see to much of a problem with that. But it doesn't make the run look very consistent.

As long as it's ok with Radix, I don't see a problem. I don't know about Sir_VG but if it were me doing the run, I probably wouldn't get around to it until summer (again). I haven't played the game for a while, and I'm a bit rusty, so I'd have to spend some time relearning the game.

To Sir_VG: Your new boss times are improving, so that's good! could use a bit of improvement for boss 3, and alot of improvement for boss 7 (especially sonic's....ouch.)

I'm most worried about boss 5.  Got any tips on that boss?  Cause he REALLY pisses me off.  It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for that stupid hand and its 1-hit kills.

Will keep striving to improve on the everything.  It'll just take some time. ^^;;

Sonical!
Apparently someone who lost judgement is decided to work on a decent single-segment speedrun as Sonic of this unforgiving game. =D

Trihex is going to be selling me a HORI controller for the Gameboy Player, so I'll start working on a SS to submit to the site. I'm excited about this!

Oh man, I remember constantly playing Sonic Advance 2. It's my favorite of the 3 Advance games. I figure it would be simple enough to play just as one character, and boom, game done. Unless the peeps want to see a complete run of Sonic, Cream, Tails and Knuckles + Super Sonic. Then that's another way to go.

If I had to pick, I'd choose Cream since she can make any boss run a cake walk. Plus she can flutter around for a bit and fly.
Artsy Fartsy
Cream makes bosses easy, but I would think the insane amount of speed that Sonic can generate might make his run fastest. That being said, a 100% run would definitely be cool to see routed, since the game is so tech-heavy.
100% single character would be fun, especially with Sonic.  Doing it with all characters would be annoying though.  And if you can pull off the bosses consistently then Sonic should be the fastest guaranteed unless your Sonic vs. Cream time isn't too different.

Yay some Sonic Advance 2 talk.
Sonic is by far the fastest character in this game, air dashing is strong.  The routes for most levels are very similar with all the characters, so an all characters run wouldn't be very interesting.
Sonic is the fastest but it's more tech heavy than the other characters.  Dunno how well other people would be able to do in a single segment run. lol
