You should include aspects from as many runs as you can. The test chamber jump in the Half-Life run, some of the huge rocket jumps in the Unreal run, the stair skipping in Mario 64, some little bits of the Doom runs, Mario Kart, you know, just as much as you can, without making the video 10 fucking years long.

Time limit is about 3:08. Well add a  few seconds for small intro and the obvious speeddemosarchive.com at the end. And due to popular demand the intro whistle will be gone...shucks...

BTW, can anyone point me to a site whare I can get some good sound effects and the like?

edit:For some reason I can't get some PC runs to download.

Ah, I figured we had somewhere closer to six minutes or so.  Bah!  Cover the essentials then.  Mega Man X, Metroid Sonic, Mario, Contra, Resident Evil.

This thread seems to be gradating into this...

Not that it's necessarily a bad thing...

Six minuts? That's Metallica song territory.

Hmm...maybe later...

Forget Metallica; go get something by Dream Theater. A Change of Seasons, maybe. Over 20 minutes!

Psh.  Go for mixing it to the Secret of Mana+ album.  One track.  49:22.  (Yes, that's 49 MINUTES.)

Well, I imagined you'd be using various music tracks scattered throughout.  And if you're using DMC3, 8:43-9:15, 12:02-12:12:17, the Crystal Skull Room's fight with the Greeds and Sloths in mission 7 (Starts at 34:40) , the Arachne fight in Mission 10 (Around the 58 minute mark) and the Vergil 3 (131:49-132:08) are all good places to look for clips.  Go for whichever one you like.

And now we'll have to lift Mario 3 out for a clip.

Vergil 3 battle huh? Sounds alright. And Mario 3 was going in too.

Man, you guys are making it sound like you want a whole speedrun movie. I don't see how that would be possibe. Does give me some other ideas for later though...
Maybe have a Metroid clip followed by Super Metroid and then Metroid Prime? That would be cool methinks..
I was gonna do that with the Mario games actually. I have an idea for a cool sequence of clips I was planning to do with that.

Also, I wanted to have some kind of slogan flah accross the screen at one point (maybe a few times), any suggestions? I'm drawing a blank.
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music

I love me my music that those freaks at pitchforkmedia would stick in a sentence with the word "wankery!" Progrock and postrock are some genres where they tend to have some very long pieces.

Octavarium is actually 50 seconds longer, almost 24 minutes. If you allow for forced (otherwise seamless) part 1/part 2 action, the longest (rock) songs I could find in short notice that I have are Motherfucker=Redeemer from Godspeed You Black Emperor and Cassandra Gemini from Mars Volta, which most of you have probably heard of. These are both over 31 minutes. If you go with longest song as it was printed on the CD, the best I can come up with is Providence, also from Godspeed, which is over 29 minutes. And these songs go by FAST, too.

Aside: Godspeed is my favorite rock band of all time, and I actually have some of their songs uploaded for my own use for whenever I'm in a public lab and I don't feel like dragging my external HD around everywhere. I could post a link if anyone cares. Everything I uploaded is either available at archive as part of a live concert or used to be freely available online, for legality purposes.

Case study: the recent Dirty Three (check avatar!) album has 19 songs, which is about 3x as much as some of their other albums. It's also not as good. I think in part it's because with the shorter track times, there's not enough time for each song to fully develop. Also, it's a lot harder to come up with 19 songs that each sound unique, rather than 6 or 7.

Back to your regularly scheduled topic. Honestly, I just skimmed and saw Dream Theater. I dunno what we're talking about. Tongue

this video is almost done by the way.

3 minutes, 8 seconds, thats it. I'll most likely put the vid on filefront since its the only outlet I have. DO NOT mention rapidshare, I hate it.

Do you have any Idea how long a 49 minute video would take to upload anyway? I couldn't do that. Unless the video can be put on this site somehow (which I doubt).

And its only a Promo video people. Not a friggin' speeddemos rock opera. (But I must admit, I think the idea of a video game rock opera sounds cool). Maybe one day.

(Well I actually do have plans to make one, but that really has nothing to do with what goes on here).

And forgetting Metallica? Blasphemy I say. Blasphemy!

I tried my stab at it since it looked like fun.  It took me a while, I tried to get it done today, that was one and a half hours ago...  Oh well, I'm very satisfied with the results, I think it's awesome.  If your run isn't in the video, sorry, the song isn't long enough and I haven't watched all the runs on the site.  I guess I should have credits at the end but I don't know how to do that...

Bonus points to anyone who tells me where the song's from and also the flash it was in.  I think the song is very fitting for a speed run site.

Here it is:

*URL deleted, get the better one*

Tips or suggestions are appreciated.  Even better would be suggestions of any scenes to replace with something that fits better.  Make sure the time fits in too.
What do I play it in? None of my players seem to run it.

Try windows media classic, it worked for me.

Not bad.

Er, yeah I had to do some wierd crap with it because some files were different types.  I had to append all the segments together with MKVToolNix and then rename it as an avi.  I wanted it done quick, but I guess I shouldn't have done that...  Either way I can play it fine.  You should have FFDShow filter.

So, any comments?

Edit:  I'll be putting up another one that I think will be OK.

Edit 2: OK here it is.  The other one was an mkv file with an avi extension and might have had a variable framerate.

Yay, that was pretty neat ;D. Good song, imo. I remember hearing it a while ago, but I don't know from where.
I like the Sonic clip you took, it starts off the music well.
I'll comment more tomorrow, possibly.

I guess I'll just put up the link to where I got the song.  I highly recommend watching it.

Heh, you used the Micheal Quest song. But the sequel is better.

Nice video. I just wish there were more. A lot more. We have plenty of good source material already.
SDA fan movies...

Sounds nice, but hope it doesn't get out of hand.

Very nice video indeed.  The Sonic bit cracked me up though when he was spin dashing to the beat like he was.  You got the right idea though.  It showed a lot of major franchises out there and the action never felt out of place.  It's a well paced, well made video, really.  I just think that Half-Life should've probably have been represented with something else.  But it's not a bad note to go out on.

Very nice all around.

Edit: Nevermind that Half-Life thing.  My winamp was cutting videos off by five seconds at the end, so I didn't see the airbourne part there.

So what do you guys think?  I think the timing of a lot of things is perfect.  The Sonic part in the beginning (fits so well), the bomb blast in Star Fox 64, and where the music picks up again from where the metroid falls and then right to a high speed F-Zero race.  And then end it with Half-Life just reloading in mid air to a close.

Edit:  Thanks Psychochild  Cheesy

Cool Video.

The sonic part in the beginning fits very well.

But maybe another half life part in the end? "Gonarchs Lair" maybe? I don't know how to explain it (blame my english). It just felt a little bit empty.

I honestly didn't notice that until you pointed it out.
