I've watched quite a few SDA and QDQ demos and movies.  And I have some thoughts...

How about running OUM (Operation: Urth Majik) ?http://www.planetquake.com/fatty/oum/
http://www.fileplanet.com/dl.aspx?fatty/oum.zip

Seemed like a top quality mod, a shame for it to go to waste.

Also, how about a Pacifist run, or Collateral Damage run, where you have to kill the least amount of monsters possible?
Thread title:
Hell is where the heart is.
OUM was indeed a fun episode. But there's a few things about adding it to SDA.

i) It has a custom progs.dat (new monsters and stuff) which means we'd want to integrate our QdQstats patch with it first, which is a lot of hard work (assuming Fatty would let us have the source)

ii) If I remember rightly there were some issues with telefragging monsters, where you get stuck inside the 'porting in monster.

iii) Even though it's a great, well made episode, I don't remember it being particularly speed runnable. Not many shortcuts.

Always good to hear suggestions for maps to add, though.

And finally, some pimpage. If you're a regular watcher but have never submitted a demo, why not try the new contest?

http://speeddemosarchive.com/quake/contests/msrj.html

It seems to be getting a fair bit of interest from new players and novice runners so give it a try and send us your entries, no matter how un-optimum you think they are. :-)

Heh, I think I'll stick to watching, I can map a little bit though.

Made about 20 maps for QWTF (Quake World Team Fortress).

Maybe I could make a map for you guys some time.

I've even made trick maps for TF.

Agreeing with most of what Morfans has said... by the way, the idea of a Pacifist run has been floating around for a while. Smiley These have been done on Doom 1 & 2 on Compet-N, and I see no reason not to do it on Quake, except for the fact that the monsters tend to be less in the way. Tongue A fair amount of the ID records don't have any killing in anyway. Smiley If you're looking for runs which don't use weapons, you could also check Windlash Demos for Quake Done Naked demos; no weapons used at all.
Hell is where the heart is.
If you ever get inspired to make some trick/speed maps that you think we might be interested in please feel free to send a link to the usual email address or come to #qdq and speak to one of the ops.

If they're any good we can run a contest on them or add them to the archive :-)

I used to play TF a lot, am I likely to have heard of any of your maps?
I started mapping 2001, in the New Zealand TF scene, so maybe you have.

Here's my site http://jonan.orcon.net.nz/main.htm

Fairly outdated. But no worries.

2ndcoup, ass, caramel, choc, coup, dot, grab, hmw, king, kotc, lltk, neen, neo3, oaa, pq, run, scuba, slam, soar, try6, try7, try8, try9, van, vip, vip2.

Most of which are available in http://jonan.orcon.net.nz/maps

They vary in quality, but they have got better over the years.

Choc, King, KOTC and Try's are the most popular.  My picks would be 2ndcoup, lltk, for quality.

Which Quake mods should/could be mapped to then?
Normal Quake, SoA, DoE? Zer?

I did start making a map for you though. Smiley
Hell is where the heart is.
There are QdQstats progs for SoA, DoE, Zer, Beyond Belief, Runner's Delight, CZG07, n3sp03, fmb100, alk07... and maybe some others.

But unless you really want to use some of the new stuff that these mission packs include it's usually easier to use the normal quake stuff.

Glad to hear you're mapping :-) can't wait to see the results.

Had a look at your site. I don't think I ever played most of the maps (unless they were on UK servers 1998-2001 it's unlikely I played them) but I remember border1. Had some great games on that. In fact it was the first map I remember playing on the "birthday" day. I didn't have a clue what was going on. :-)

Nearly finished with map. Smiley

Also, has Slide Mod been considered for runs?
Wow. Whole map in 5 days.
Don't forget to post your work at Func_Msgboard  http://www.celephais.net/board/news.php  You will get some feedback.
Hell is where the heart is.
Don't forget to NOT post your work at Func YET otherwise we can't use it as a contest map.

We'll give you feedback and suggestions, then once we're all happy we can release it as a contest and post it at Func. :-)

We used a modified slide map for a contest a while back. Temple of Gaia I think it was. Great fun.

Finished it.

Bit of a rush job. Tongue

OK, two points:

1) What Morfans was trying to hint at was that if we're going to use a map for a contest, we want the first time that anyone who isn't the mapper or a SDA staffer to see the map to be when we announce the contest (seems fairer that way).  In this case it doesn't matter because...

2) The map, while nice enough to play (although stupidly short on ammo!) isn't what I'd call suitable for a speed running contest.  It would just be bunnybunnybunny/grab rl/boost to exit -- we want more tricks than that! Smiley
actually I'd grab the gl instead of the rl, much faster.
sorry mwh  Smiley

How about Nehahra mod?
Thunderbolt Forever :)
Nehahra is a GREAT thing. I've just enjoyed it.

Indeed, why not to add it to the list as well as Zerstörer and Insomnia?

Zer is, and I think Insomnia is too.

I know, so let's add Nehahra as well.

Let's not... Nehahra isn't speedrunable, and besides, there's at least one SDA staffy who doesn't like the episode and I won't say who!

What a pity. Roll Eyes

Well, at least some old demos:

How about SOE, Soul of Evil?
http://dl.fileplanet.com/dl/dl.asp?tronyn/soe_full.zip

Apart from new entities, seems OK.
Maybe needs some new skins though, especially the "grunt" and "enforcer".

Well, it crashes if you try to play it on skill 0 for one thing... is there a source release for the progs?

Bengt Jardrup told me that he found and fixed all of these issues like the crash on soe1m2, invalid monster counts and so on.
Yes, I've (hopefully) fixed the progs issues (including the Easy skill crash in soe1m2) and can upload it and the source if anyone is interested. SoE is a really great pak.

I'd definitely be interested.  Though I guess I could just play through on normal... bit busy at the moment though.
