We've seen it at several Castlevania speedruns: It's not "play until you see the credits", it's "finish the game with the best (canon) ending". Since we meet the Etecoons and Dachoras again at B.S.L in Metroid Fusion, one can figure out that they survived Zebes' explosion thanks to Samus, who shot a hole in the wall so they could reach the escape pod. However, since I've never seen their rescue in a speedrun, ain't these runs invalid, especially in a 100% run?
Thread title:
speed run is the fastest way to complete the game and rescue them = taking more time for nothing.
And I don't think that it could go in a different catagorie.
The game is not completed if you do not rescue them. You will just see the credits. It's like I'm beating Graham (Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow) without Flame Demon, Succubus and Giant Bat, looking at the credits and saying: "I beat the game."
Fucking Weeaboo

They were saved by the SA-X that traveled back in time to blow open the passageway.  Either that or the bomb statue came back to life and blew it open.  Or maybe it was a ghost.

Who knows.  WHO CARES.  It's a fricken speedrun for pete's sake!
I know and I care, and you should know and care too. It's just wrong. If not, tell me the reason why you have to do the inverted castle in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Why not just kill Richter?
新世紀進歩的羽扇子 音楽
you don't have to.  but those are still totally different.

there is an ending if you don't rescue the animals.  in fact it looks almost the same.  and it doesn't add something new to the rest of the gameplay, unlike opening up the chaotic realm or the inverted castle.
Glub glub.
Plus, it is an extremely minor detail.  I would wager it was added more as an Easter Egg than a different ending.
Yeah, there are also endings if you kill Richter or Graham, but they are not canon and the game is not 100% completed. For 100% you will have to play further, which will add more time to your counter. For the rescue of the animals you will also have to take a little detour, and it will take more time. Think about it, it's exactly the same.

It's the canon ending. That's what makes all the difference. The SotN-Endings are also very similar, the only difference is the number of people standing in front of the collapsing castle and the resulting dialogues.
Yep yep yep!
Actually, I haven't played any Castle vania games except II (yes, I know it's sad), but in SM as far as not rescuing them, firstly, percent is determined by the item rate collection percent at the game's end, and secondly, when the game was made, both endings were canon.
I'm not talking about items, and there can't be two canon endings.
Your almighty lordship
There isn't a rule on Super Metroid that says it needs the canon ending. Therefore it doesn't need to be.

I'm addicted to games
Ekard is correct...
Also, if someone wants to do a "bad ending" run on symphony of the night or other castlevanias, knock yourself out.
Ah, okay, I finally got it. Smiley
Hell is where the heart is.
Amusing.  I've only played about 10 minutes of SM but I've seen all the speedruns several times.

Up until this thread I didn't even know that there was a "rescue the thingys" thing in the game.

Must head over to m2k2 and see if there's a vid of it...
don't have a vid atm. could do one if there were enough interest/someone did it for me (e.g. zsnes emu vid).

everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
I have this somehow, so I uploaded it here. I think this is an unpublished alternate ending from the obsoleted any% TAS.

Edit: Uh, that was for Morfans? :-/

Heh I already gave nate a non-TAS'd smv (played by me if you care <_<)... from what I've seen you don't actually have to wait for the friends to go off screen, you just have to shoot the wall and go.
Just watched the video

That's awesome...

I had no idea you could rescue the animals, or that I should even bother going into that room during the countdown.

It ain't luck, It's skill!
I've played Super Metroid and I've gotten both endings; the difference is imperceptable unless you know what to look for: a tiny ship made up of about 5 pixels escaping to the right as planet zebes blows up.

No fancy pics of samus with the only frindly zebesians left, no special unlockables, it's just so that you'll feel better.

There's really no reason to bring it up.
Sorry for the bump, but I just finished watching the new SM run. Guess what? He rescued the creatures! Mwhahahaha. Thank you! Smiley
yeah, but only because it wouldn't cause him to get a higher time.
Yep yep yep!
What I want to know is how he could have POSSIBLY known that.  Did he, like have someone standing there with a stopwatch pressing stop at every item collection, room transition, and elevator?
it's easy enough if you know the route beforehand to add up all the limbo and then have "milestones" written down, for example entering the crateria shaft for the last time during the escape.

welcome to the machine
Assuming you take the same route each time you play through for practice, the amount of time that doesn't get counted will be the same for each playthrough.  So you simply have to play through enough times to figure out at what point, exactly, the timer rolls over to a new minute and go from there.
