I've been in the mood for playing some good Shmups (Shoot-em-ups) and I'm trying to expand my current library.
I own Gradius III,
Super R-type
Raiden Trad
FirePower2000 (Amazing)
Ikaruga

Any suggestions for some great Shmups? Any console would be good, though I'm more inclined to older, more classic games (SNES, NES, Gen)
I'm not a gigantic fan nor do I have a lot of knowledge of the genre, so please don't mention an obscure japan-only title as I'll not know what the hell you're talking about.
Thread title:
King of hearts
Zero Wing!

What happen ?
Somebody set up us the bomb.
We get signal.
What !
Main screen turn on.
It's you !!
How are you gentlemen !!
All your base are belong to us.
You are on the way to destruction.
What you say !!
You have no chance to survive make your time.
Ha Ha Ha Ha ....
Captain !!
Take off every 'Zig'!!
You know what you doing.
Move 'Zig'.
For great justice.

You're in luck, because I wrote a huge thread about shmups over at another forum.

But first, you want MAME, because most great shmups are arcade shmups. MAME can be found here, ROMs can with some effort be found [url=www.google.com]here[/url]. If you have the space (12+ GBs), I'd reccomend trying to find a ROMset torrent. Pure MAME is run via commandline, but there's GUIs for n00bs. Tongue

*copy-paste no jutsu*

Of all shmups I've tried, there's the ones from two companies that stand out as the very best. First of all there's Cave, the undisputed masters of arcade shmups. They weren't first with maniac shmups, but they took the genre to new heights. Then there's Team Shanghai Alice, the undisputed master of PC shmups. I say master in singular form because the "team" only has one member, known as ZUN.

So here's the best of the best...

DoDonPachi [Cave] (Arcade/PS1)

DoDonPachi is the sequel to DonPachi, Caves first shmup. DonPachi is not as good as it's sequel by far, so it's something you can skip. DoDonPachi is the best thing from Cave so far, best arcade shmup I've ever played, but one of their recent releases might take that title when I've played more... I'll go into that later. DoDonPachi is pure brilliant wonderful shmup chaos from the first playing moment to the last.

ESP Ra.De. [Cave] (Arcade)

In ESP Ra.De. you play as one of three kids with ESP (Extra-Sensorsomething-Perception, or Power, I think...), who are out to save something. You get some kind of story served between the stages, but it's strange and pretty much only an excuse for filling another game with a bullet hell. Hard as f**k.

Progear no Arashi [Cave] (Arcade)

Progear no Arashi is unique for Cave: it's their only horizontal shmup. But it doesn't change much, of course it's another maniac shmup. If you learn the bonus system, you can turn many bullets into even more points. But it's easier said than done, this might be the hardest Cave shmup I've played so far. I haven't really played DoDonPachi Dai-Oh-Jou enough to say that it's much harder, even though it was insane, and I hear that Ketsui is the hardest ever from Cave - but I haven't played it.

Espgaluda [Cave] (Arcade/PS2)

This game is very loosely tied to ESP Ra.De., how I'm not really sure. Some game elements are the same, and the system in Arrange Mode is pretty much a copy of the system in ESP Ra.De.. Espgaluda incorporates a mode called kakusei, which can be activated as long as you have the power for it. It slows down everything, and is a bonus device as well (of course). If you don't have the power and try to use it, you'll get the punishment. At least the game is easier than ESP Ra.De.

Mushihimesama [Cave] (Arcade/PS2)

Insect shmup! And wonderful! This is the rival of DoDonPachi about the title of best Cave shmup ever. The wonderful chaos in Maniac and Arrange mode in Mushihimesama are hard to match, but so far I'll let DoDonPachi stand as the best, at least until I've played more of Mushihimesama. The graphics are fantastic, the bullets even more purple than ever before and in greater amounts. One of the GOTYs, by far!

Battle Bakraid [Raizing/8ing] (Arcade)

Gasp, it's not Cave! Indeed, Battle Bakraid is my favouite arcade shmup that's not from Cave. After playing only Battle Garegga, I wasn't a fan of Raizing/8ing, but after discovering their much better games Armed Police Batrider and Battle Bakraid, they rised in my eyes.  Bakraid is the better of them, but medalhunting and Raizings rank system often gets me... despite that, it's great.

Touhou Koumakyou ~ The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil [Team Shanghai Alice] (PC)

Onto the PC shmups, and onto my favourite game series ever, the Shrine Maiden or Touhou series! Touhou Koumakyou weren't the first, it's actually the sixth game in the series, but it's the first that's for PC, and that was a great leap in the qulity (even if I sometimes find the fifth game, Mystic Square, at least as fun as this). The graphics, the music, the bullet patterns! This is the game that gave birth to the Spellcard system, and some of the attacks the bosses spit out on you are just stunning. A must play.

Touhou Yoyoumu ~ Perfect Cherry Blossom [Team Shanghai Alice] (PC)

This, my friends, is the closest to perfection I've ever seen anything come. Best shmup ever, likely the best game ever created. Touhou Yoyoumu took the things that made Koumakyou great, and improved them. And added new things, such as the most anal scoring system the series has ever seen so far... the Cherry/Supernatural Border system. Fail to exploit it, and you won't get insane scores. Learning how to time your borders are the core of the scoring system. And of course how to hypergraze during said borders to increase the point item value... I could talk all day about this game, but I won't.

Touhou Eiyashou ~ Imperishable Night [Team Shanghai Alice] (PC)

Touhou Eiyashou is probably the easiest of the Touhou games so far. The system is a little more forgiving, the deathbomb interval (when you get hit, if you fire off a bomb within a number of frames, you'll survive) greater than in any of the others, the item collection a bit easier thanks to that phantom form can collect items at the POC (Point Of Collection. Introduced in Koumakyou. When your character has full power and you move up to a certain height at the screen, all items will get drawn to you) even when not at full power.

Touhou Bunkachou ~ Shoot the Bullet [Team Shanghai Alice] (PC)

Labeled as Touhou 9.5, Touhou Bunkachou is something unique. It's a danmaku photography game! Playing as Aya, the reporter for the Bunbunmaru newspaper, you need a few good pictures for your articles. This game is fast-paced, insane and INCREDIBLY hard. But fun!

(another section in next message because of limit.)

Now, those I listed in my previous post are commercial games. If you can't afford buying them and don't want to pirate/emulate, well, there's nothing to do.

That's why you want to look at this section with free shiznit!

Psyche Metal the Bleeding

Very very red shmup. Very very maniac shmup. Apparently it can display 1600 bullets at the screen at the same time, and while I haven't counted, it sure as hell looks like it can be correct. Five stages of blood and countless bullets.
Get it here.

Galshell Blood Red Skies

Some light nudity in this, but nothing shocking... except for the other parts of the game, though. The enemies are bizarre creatures... but of course there's a good game here as well, with what counts: lots and lots of enemy shots. Hard as hell on Normal and up.
You know you want it

Yakouga 2+ Hellbound

From the same people that did Galshell comes Hellbound, seemingly a special edition of their earlier game Yakouga 2. Strangely, this looks like it's freeware, whereas the Yakouga games are not... Hellbound is not as hard as Galshell thanks to the reflector shield you get, which takes a second to recharge and is activated by simply letting go of the fire button. 1CC'd it on Normal on my first try after I had grasped the shield usage...

rRootage [Kenta Cho]

Aah, Kenta Cho! Most of his games are simply great, but there's three standing out as the best ones. The first and best of them is rRootage - a boss rush shmup. You only fight one big enemy at a time, who launches various bullet patterns at you, some of them borrowed from other games. With four avilable playing modes (Normal, GigaWing, Psyvariar and Ikaruga) and many stages of increasing difficulty, it gives you something to do for a long time.
Site

Noiz2sa [Kenta Cho]

Noiz2sa is the most basic shmup game from Kenta Cho, and his second best. Move your ship around, shoot the enemies, don't get hit and collect the bonuses! Very cubistic.
Site 2

Torus Trooper [Kenta Cho]

Torus Trooper isn't really a maniac shmup but what the hell, it's awesome to play anyway... high-speed around in a tunnel, shoot the enemies and don't get hit. You don't have lives but time, you lose time when running into a enemy shot and gain time after clearing specific targets. Look in the readme for instructions how to bloat the game up to your resolution.
Site 3

Ultimate Stage

Clearly inspired by DoDonPachi, this is a VERY maniac little game. If you get hit when you have bombs left, you do autobomb, so you effectively have somewhere around 12 lives - but unless you're really good, that's not enough anyway...
Here!

Siroi Danmakukun

This is only bullet dodge and no shooting. Includes lots of patterns from many different games, that's fired at you in random order. Some are easy to clear, some are a bit harder, and some are outright evil. See how many seconds you last out there!
Official homepage, scroll down for the download.

Scarlet Bee Barrage Simulator (at least I think that's what it's named)

Another bullet dodge game, but this one is a bit... different. Instead of many different patterns in the same session, in this game you select one pattern and try to clear it - and every time you clear it, the difficulty increases a little. Unless I'm completely mistaken, this only includes Cave patterns - the last patterns are from Mushihimesama. Yes, #65 is from there, and yes, it's insane there too.
GAMEGET

And oh yeah: Most SNES, NES and Genesis shmups just suck badly.
welcome to the machine
ABA games

Simple but still fun.  I recommend rRootage and parsec47.

Oh, and I would mention that Kenny missed Ikaruga, but you already have it.
XXY
Oh yeah, I remember a game like this on my old PC. I believe it was called "Raptor." Not sure if it goes by another alias, but that's what it was named on my computer.

It looked something like that, except a lot better. It's hard to find a proper screenshot on Google. Oh well. It was a major fun game, even though I only got to play the first episode :(.

I didn't miss Ikaruga, I ignored Ikaruga because Ikaruga is mediocre.

Not enough bullets for you?
Fucking Weeaboo
You missed two of the best, most difficult shmups of all time.

SNES: Phalanx.  Look for the man with the banjo on the front of the box.  Difficulty levels?  Hard, Harder, Hardest, Are You Kidding Me? Hard, and OMFG PREPARE TO DIE FOOL (aka Funny - I'm not kidding on this.  The highest difficulty level is indeed called "Funny").

PS1: Philosoma.  An early release using CG scenes, including a surprise CG in a CG.  I thought that was cool.  I loved this game, despite it's pull-your-hair out difficulty.  3 levels of difficulty: Possible, Impossible, Ethen Hunt couldn't pull this off Mission:Impossible.

No, just the worst and stupidest gimmick in a shmup. Ever.

Lol, I mentioned that specifically for a reaction from Kenny.

Classic.

It's not a gimmick if it works well, which it does.
MarioKart64.com biotch!
Damnit Pocari! I was going to post Raptor. LOL thought I was the only one to ever play that game.  Grin

everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
The "real" answer is games by Treasure, Cave, and Team Shanghai Alice (didn't know the name before now). But since KennyMan666 has probably just scared the living crap out of you, I will give you my simple, pet answer: Dragon Spirit, from Namco. Anybody played this? Play the arcade version on MAME over the NES version if you can, and forget about the sequel -- it sucks. Anyway, Dragon Spirit is pretty much the polar opposite of the current "maniac" shmups (with a huge, slow character), but it still holds a place close to my heart.

I will stay out of the Ikaruga discussion because Kenny has the right to field his strong opinions.

Edit: I did like Raptor from Apogee, back in the day, although it was way too easy. What's above is something different though.

Muwahaha, owned! And I used to play Raptor all the time. It was up there with my old fashion games that I kicked fucking ass at:
Syndicate
Hi-Octane
Doom/2
Duke3D
Descent

How I miss that game :(. I think I can snag it from my dad though, I'll have to ask him about that. Rofl, who's gonna do the first Shmup speedrun? Tongue
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
Pocari, what is the Raptor above? It's not listed on GameFAQs and I doubt it's one of those old DOS "classics" like Tank Wars or Chopper 2.0 that don't show up.

To answer your question, I have to assume you don't know about http://www.super-play.co.uk/.

An obscure shmup that I'm almost positive nobody has played is this shareware game from Korea I somehow had, Ranger Fox. It was fairly entertaining while it lasted, and I probably only enjoyed it because I could make fun of it with friends. I think it was full of engrish (before that was hip and everything), and for some reason there was no way to exit the game (we tried everything) and you had to just reboot to quit. We would joke that if you sent in the registration, they gave you the secret cheat code that let you quit the game.
The BaldurManiac
Wait a second i dont see any speedruns of those kind of games.

I NEED TO SEE!
King of hearts
You can't speedrun them, most go at a fixed rate.
XXY
Atleast you'd win the "Most ridiculous game to speedrun" category when the '06 SDA awards come around.

They also included it in the latest Namco Collection (25th Anniversary), although I have no clue how the port is because I didn't buy the game, just saw it. It's very likely to be better than the NES and more legal than MAME, but the NC ports are more off than most. (I'm pretty sure they used a port instead of an emulator, unless they suddenly changed this time around or they're using really crappy emulators.)
Sleeping Terror
Ikaruga > all. Except, you know, other Treasure games. Like Sin & Punishment.

I played Raptor, too... though only the shareware version.

Please, do not mention anything Namco Collection (I think it's 50th anniversary btw). NC is great, if you're Triumph the Insult Comic Dog that is. I still recommend MAME or even better, the real version in a real arcade.

Anyway, Suzaku, if you're in the mood for something a little wackier, try the Parodius series.
Eternal Understudy
I've played Parodius. It's pretty funny, but it's basically just Gradius with differing graphics.

That would put Namco making videogames in the 50's.

Namco was founded in Tokyo in 1955, by Masaya Nakamura under the name Nakamura Manufacturing Ltd. It began by producing mechanical rocking-horses and similar children's rides, which were installed in a number of department stores in Yokohama and Nihonbashi.

You don't have to have been making games since the 50s to be 50 years old you know. Cheesy
