I'm only been a user here for a couple months, so I don't know if this is my place to speak on, but I'm going to give the benefit of the doubt and assume that the reason half of SDA is a train wreck is because it's simultaneously going through a reluctant transition period and it's only been a month after a GDQ, both of which are which going to cause a bit of high tensions, and combined quite a bit more.

This does not at all justify what I've seen in the past couple of days. I've only recently joined and I'm already thoroughly sick of the drama and fighting and somewhat want to already leave. Which is a shame, considering there's a silent majority of runners here who are awesome in moving progress forward for actual speedrunning. Of course, since it's a surprisingly less active section (isn't that what the community is for?), instead of getting what I want, I'm seeing more and more vacuous arguments and petty fights.

I've seen at least five calls-to-action to ban/demote/nuke person X. Seriously? I can't even tell if any of these complaints are trolling or not. Of course, on the other side of the community, I've seen some staff members conveniently ignore serious points about issues that need to be addressed. I don't know if that means they're being resolved off-forum (hope to God they are, some of them are bad omissions) or they're being straight-up unacknowledged. If it's the latter, that's a massive check-minus to the community.

I know I haven't directly named names or pointed out specific events, mostly to not stir the s-storm, but I'm positive that this isn't 100% randoms trolling for the sake of lulz, since I recognize far too many influential names saying things they shouldn't mean.

Unless I'm missing something right in front of me. Please tell me this'll cool down and this isn't always the case. If it ends up being like this forever, I know I wouldn't want to stay here.
Thread title:
TIOLET!
Ever since the marathons outgrew SDA they have been a source for drama in various forms. Just stay away from he GDQ related threads and you should experience way less drama on the rest of the site.
Everyday is puppies and sunshine...
Agreed.  Sticking with your particular games and the verification process seems to be a good way to avoid it.  I have posted runs on the site, have been part of the community for a few years, and I don't really see the drama at all because I pretty much skip those threads.
Clear as a crisp spring morning!
As someone who other than doing run verifications mainly is concerned with GDQ threads since I'm an offsite volunteer... Gelly, you're vocalizing something that I've felt for a good long while.

I originally wrote an elaboration for this post but decided against posting it. Even not naming anyone it feels like pointing fingers. I just wish the marathons and the community could both prosper.
Echoing what everyone else has said. Just ignore it. Even if you took the time to dig through everything to get to the root of the issue, you'll probably just find out that someone is bitching over something real trivial.

Just play your video games and ignore those posts, and unfollow the nerds on twitter who feel the need to go on about the same drama BS everyday.

If you click on the triangle to the left of the board's name after bringing it up from the index, you can set it to ignore new posts from that board, that is they will not show up in the unread posts.  I have done that for both marathon boards.
What's truly important on SDA are my front page updates. Another one coming up just tomorrow! Well worth getting outcha bed for. Wink

Speedrunning is hard. It takes a lot of effort and focus.
Interacting with the speedrun community is much easier; you just bitch about stuff until you get banned or enough people agree that a mod has to come and calm the thread down.

However, both speedrunning and interacting with the community make you feel like you've done something worthwhile. Ergo, more threads will be about community crap! Separating the wheat from the chaff is the most important internet skill you will ever develop. It's a sad fact that the content of this forum has changed so drastically towards the chaff, but it's not completely forsaken yet. The best way is to stay out of it and try to promote the good bit, i.e. runner discussion.

LotBlind is carrying right now. Which is a dangerous thing if you look back at SDA history. But I believe in LotBlind.

Also I agree with Kibbo about staying away from marathon talk. People =drama, GDQ = people. Simple as that.

Has anyone ever told you you're a negative person?
Hey LotBlind, I got a good laugh at your write up for my Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner entry.  Thanks for the good work.
I sometimes read them back like 6 times after they're out.
