everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
How to get MAME: You can use whatever version of whatever emulator you want, but here is one.
How to set controls: Load a game, then press <tab>.
How to get roms: "emucation" is a nice search string.
Here is a fun idea, modeled after Macaw's STGT (and loosely, the main STGT) over at shmups.com. There is interest on IRC, please post here if you are interested so that more people will see this and themselves get interested! I will either start this next Monday at midnight EST, or the Monday after that, depending on reception. Once the tourney starts, I will lock this thread and create a new thread which will be used for the entire tourney (to not spam general chat).
Every week, I will pick an awesome arcade game (awesomeness guaranteed or your money back). You will play this awesome game and play for high score using one credit! By the end of the week (you can submit as many times as you want), you will post your high score. I will tally these and rank everyone by their eventual high score. You get 1 point for each person you finish ahead of. Your scores for the 5 weeks will be combined for your final score.
Do not worry about recording an inp or taking a screenshot or feeling the need to prove your score (although you can if you want), since this is all for fun and prizes do not depend on how well you do. I guess you could cheat, but that would be lame, but I don't expect that to be a problem anyway.
I will be playing in this tourney as well, but since I have the advantage of knowing what the games will be, I will not be eligible to win the tourney, nor to win any prizes. If you finish ahead of me though, you do get a point of course.
This tourney is for fun and not serious at all so please join, even if you think you suck at video games or you don't know any of the games involved. That's actually the point, to expose people to a whole world of great games that they may not know about (so I will try to pick games with no console or PC port, or with relatively unknown ports). You can spend as much time as you want each week. Maybe you have a lot of time and spend several hours, maybe you're busy and only have 15 minutes, that's fine. Maybe you only participate in one week, who knows. Don't be embarrassed to submit your score, even if it looks low compared to everyone else. Don't emphasize the competitive aspect too much, the point is just to participate and have fun!
To further encourage participation, I will be giving away some prizes in the form of video games that I will mail to you to keep. I haven't figured out the details, but (unless I have 5 games) I will randomly select weeks at the end, and then randomly select a participant to get any prizes. This means that yes, you could just play for 10 minutes and still win, but hopefully if you bother to do that, you will be interested and keep on playing.
Let me know if you have any questions. There are no official signups, but just post here to GET HYPE like I said. Oh, and if you know me and think I'm going to pick 5 Taito games, or 5 shmups, or 5 Taito shmups, think again! There will be all kinds of variety, in terms of genres, developers, and difficulty of the games. Also! There is the possibility that I might run a speedrunning tourney in the future, but I will only consider that if the turnout is good for the arcade tourney.
There is a lot of interest in the coming STGT later this year, and SDA will probably field two teams this year. If you want to make the A team, you should really play in this tourney and try to do well (especially during the shmup week), because this will show that you are dedicated and have the ability to produce good scores. You might think the idea is great now, but if you only submit scores for 1-2 weeks, you might not be hard-working enough.
