Hey,i"m downloading a lot of video on that website and i thought that maybe these video should be rip in a dvd format cause when transferring to dvd,
Nero or other burning stuff have to recompress the video to make it work on a dvd player.(take a fucking long time to record)
Anyway that was just a suggestion and if you think it would take to long to rip out in a (dvd format, ready to burn)forget it!
What do you think Huh?
Thread title:
King of hearts
Too much work, too much space, not enough people care, not enough time to do it.
lol, were this a few months ago i would have replied with just  "dvd.metroid2002..."
I can only see this happening for next gen dvds like HD DVD and Blu-Ray since both can use H264.
welcome to the machine
Simply put: we tried this already.  It died.  Horribly.  nate wasted way too much of his time on them.
he just means to download for burning afaik. that would be a little different, but still a waste of time.

I was actually wondering about something like this. Once the next gen DVD players come around, if it would be ok to use h264 for all quality levels? Maybe even someday (not likely soon since Radix still has an old computer IIRC) even become the default SDA codec?

Since it's kind of on topic, where can you find H.264 for free? I can only find trial versions.

yes.
I'm addicted to games
h.264 will NEVER become the default codec as long as you need a shitty program like ffdshow to use it.

But you won't in the future. You'll likely be able to play it natively with WMP. I think the newest OS X can already do h264 out of the box. You could also currently be using VLC or MPlayer, but they both use the same libavcodec that ffdshow does.

Anyway, the future is a crazy place.
I recommend VLC as the first choice now for playing back H264. Reason being the decoding speed is much lower.
Precursor
If you want speed, MPlayer > VLC. I've tried both, and a few other media players, and MPlayer is by far the fastest player I've ever used.
Thanks Kennyman! I compared it to VLC and it seems to run at 10-15% less processor usage.
Your almighty lordship
Not to mention the interface far prettier.
I got the version for windows and I didn't get a GUI.. That's why I'll only use it when even VLC can't decode fast enough.

Am I missing something?

To get a GUI, you need to use a skin or you could fake it with a frontend. This is why, even though I think MPlayer is better, I would recommend VLC to anybody who couldn't even get DivX to work. Wink

Also, there is an in_mplayer plugin for Winamp. You can find the link on the same page or just go here. Even though I use Winamp, I can't really say how well it works because I mostly use in_dshow.
Woo-Wee!

Uh, what? Do you mean burning Speed Runs to disc so you could watch it in a DVD player? Download the video, and when making a VCD on Nero just select the file and burn away. Of course you can only fit 74-120 min. of footage though.
well it would be nice if the video is already on a dvd format cause when burning a big speedrun ex:half-life 2 it take like 2 gig on a dvd and nero need to recompress the vid in IS format

Try to follow this:

- MPEG-4 > MPEG-2
- Current DVD = MPEG-2
- You need at least double the bitrate to get the same quality with MPEG-2 meaning at least double the file size
- Double the file size = Double the bandwidth usage = Archive.org and Dreamhost not happy
- You are in a minority. Most people here watch runs on the computer. If you really want to watch it on your TV, that's your own problem.
well, as far as space/bandwidth goes, the insane quality was originally going to be something like that, high bitrate mpeg-2, but we could never find a good way to do it from inside vdub, and archive seemed to be happy with 4 megabaud divx, so that's what we stuck with. truth be told, you can just burn high quality to dvd and watch it on a divx-compatible dvd player if you really don't want to convert anything.
A DIVX DVD i never see that in montreal but anyway it was only a suggestion!
I know most of the people watch the speedrun vids on the computer but i don't have any now(only my girlfriend have one)
but anyway!
Thanks i will look for a DIVX dvd Roll Eyes
