My feelings on The Demon Rush
I'll let HonorableJay or Mr. K take over this thread when one of them is ready.

It's no secret that the recording guides we currently have on the KB are outdated and could use some updates. Mr. K and honorableJay have made some progress, but we definitely need to have up to date recording guides that do a good job of explaining the costs and advantages of each recording method. Also, we need to make sure that all of the modern recording options are well-explained.

Yes
We've started from scratch with the recording guide.  You can see what we have so far here: https://kb.speeddemosarchive.com/Recording

Here is what we still need:

== More console specific information ==
Recording each console has its own quirks.  We want to keep track of each console's resolution, A/V connectors, framerate, and different model revisions.  This should also cover any available A/V modifications that produce higher quality video.  I've completed the Nintendo consoles and I need help with the rest.  You can use the formatting for the Nintendo consoles as a guide to help you complete the other consoles.

==  More information about video capture devices ==
The old KB focused mainly on the DVD recording.  Video capture devices have become much more popular.  We need to start including more information on video capture devices .  We'll eventually be porting over information that Omnigamer has been collecting here: https://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/capture_device_compendium_tell_me_about_your_capture_device.html

== More information on capture software ==
I've started to add some basic information on recording in VirtualDub: https://kb.speeddemosarchive.com/VirtualDub .  There are some additional tweaks which I haven't yet included.
HonorableJay has also made a page on Amarec: https://kb.speeddemosarchive.com/Amarectv_recording

== Review of existing content ==
I would appreciate it if some of the existing content that I've posted there.
All the things
I'll chug through some console specific pages tomorrow.

Love the progress so far. I have made some minor updates to these pages

**Note 2: SCART is more commonly used in Europe and it also enables players to use SEGA Genesis/Master System in 60hz and in colour by using the console's RGB SCART cable.

To do:

Add info on Sega Megadrive, Master System, Dreamcast.

Alternate recording method on DS/3DS capture - FRAPS recording

Alternate recording method for PC games - Avermedia Live Gamer Portable

Advantages for using DS capture over 3DS capture - Compatibility of GBA games, region lock on DSi-enhanced games, playing it in 'Native' resolution on DS related games.

Thanks Greenalink!  I haven't done anything with SCART connectors or anything with PAL for that matter.  Any help that you could provide would be much appreciated.  I was initially not going to recommend the DS capture device for GBA games, but it looks like the most recent update allows it to capture at 60 FPS which would make it an acceptable alternative to the Game Boy Player.

Edit: Incidentally I haven't touched the PC guide either.  I don't have any experience in this area so if you've got anything to add, please do so.

Recording stuff with SCART isn't as simple as Composite/S-video, especially when looking up on RGB SCART Splitters.

I'm making a skeleton page on Sega's 16-bit console the problem is that:

1) None the Sega consoles had as much research as the Nintendo consoles like the actual framerate and the possible resolution issue when recording it from a HD Capture card.

2) Unlike the Super Nintendo where nearly everyone calls it the SNES, when typing down the information about the Sega 16 bit console, should I call it
Sega Mega Drive,
Sega Genesis,
Sega Genesis/Mega Drive?

Beyond SCART, many consoles can also output in native RGB. This is difficult and expensive to set up most times though. Nintendo's multi-out port has pins for RGB (except on SNS-101). It has to be modded onto other consoles like Genesis, but it is the absolute highest quality you can get from the systems. It would require an entirely separate guide later on though, since it gets to be a bit tangential from any one console.

Another thing to note: I feel like the warning regarding HD devices and capturing 240 content is a bit misrepresented. It isn't so black and white as HD vs SD devices; there are a number of SD devices that simply can't handle the 240 signals as well. It really depends on the device.

EDIT: PS1 is done.

EDIT2: A troubleshooting section for common recording problems would be great, since a lot of times people run into the same general problems. I have a couple pieces to add, but it only covers what I've personally encountered.

I've updated the warning for 240 lines of resolution to reflect this.  I'm currently linking to the capture card compendium thread.  As that thread becomes more complete we can port it over to the wiki.  I may also just make a table of capture cards that support 240.

Regarding console modding, I think I might just link to the tutorials that gamesx has done for anyone determined to do it on her/his own.  If people are interested in having the console modded, we'd link them to people who are reputable who would be willing to perform the modding service like Pasky.  We could refer people to services like eBay, but we'd have no way to vouch for the quality of the mod.

A troubleshooting section would be fantastic.  Where would you envision placing it?  Were you thinking of a general troubleshooting section?

Edit: Greenalink if you don't have the framerate you can just omit it from the chart until we find out what it is (I hope we will).  Sega Genesis/Mega Drive is fine.  Inclusiveness is better.
All the things
Troubleshooting should either be specific to the capture program, or have its own section apart from them; ie a more "general-purpose" recording/capture troubleshooting page. For now though I think it would be best to set it up at the bottom of  AmaRec and VDub's pages, and we can worry about consolidating it later if there's enough reason to. I will add in the Troubleshooting sections on both later today with a couple of the issues that come to mind.

Covered most of Sega Megadrive/Genesis.

TO DO: Ask any speed runners how they recorded any Genesis/Mega Drive games with stereo sound on the original model.

Mega Drive model 1 has stereo from the front. There are cables to accomodate that.

Both Mega Drive / Genesis output RGB native.

Is it a 3.5mm audio cable followed by a RCA converter that splits into 2 audio channels?
Something like this:

I actually have third party cables for my Model 1 that have white and red cables. I don't think this gives true stereo, it just duplicates the audio signal... but I guess you could watch my Quackshot run with headphones to confirm? Tongue

I can see if I can track down a picture of the cables if it'll help.
yeah, it's actually a commodore 64 cable. one of the audio channels is missing iirc. it's either that or it's what you said - both have mono audio. so no luck there. have to go out the front.
The Dork Knight himself.
If you check the pinouts for the model 1 Genesis you'll see that the a/v plug on the back only has mono audio out.

Then I'm thinking of something else. Regardless, there are some consoles or versions of consoles that you won't be able to get the RGB signals from without modding the system.

Yes.

There is also this, which can be used with line-in ports: http://monitorking.com/images/audio_cable_long.jpg

Either should give stereo just fine.

Thanks for making this. Abit off topic here but some questions:

1. When you said "this is the suggested version of PSP for speedrunning" in regards to the PSP 3000, do you mean for actual PSP games and not like PS1 classics (due to r1/r2/l1/l2 being awkward to press as just two shoulder buttons)?
2. If the above is true and I wanted to run PS1 classics for SDA, should I get a PSP Go instead since it seems I can connect a PS3 controller using bluetooth? Would this mean I could control PS1 classics with proper shoulder button support?

PS1 games are best on a PS2 Slim, as it has the fastest load times. It's better than the PSN version.

I would really appreciate if somebody made a recording tutorial for PS3 =)
I think the Gameboy capture page needs some additions.

For one thing there is still the warning that a run without the black border is rejected. Some time ago a run with a "gameboy" border was accepted.

Also a note about the colour palette and game specific SGB borders should be included. AFAIK the current stance is that these settings can be freely choosen by the runner.

May I just edit this in? (Or am I allowed to edit this?)
