Everyday is puppies and sunshine...
Now we're getting serious; I'm a few days away from submitting my QFG4 run (after four years of hiatus) and I am ready to move on to QFG3.  I never planned on running QFG2 (ugh) or QFG5 (yikes) but it seems like a neat possibility of doing one speed run through five games.  The question I have: is it possible on SDA to have a single-segment run that spans 5 games?  You can import your character from one game to the next.

The games are not memory/CPU/anything intensive anymore, so I could probably have all five up at the same time ready to go and ALT-TAB over to the next.  Or is there a better way?  Is there anything like this at all on SDA now, or would I be forced into a five-segment?

I need some SDA experience on this one.  I am too excited by the prospect now.
Thread title:
Might be magic...
Wow, that sounds like quite an undertaking. I'd be keen to see a speedrun of all the QFG games, though I don't think there is any precedent for a multi-game run. However, it does seem like it could be a valid separate category, as some of the strategies would change if you were importing a character from a previous game (I'm thinking of stat grinding especially).

There's also a few details which may have to be worked out, like which version of QFG1 should be used (i.e. "Hero's Quest" EGA or the "Quest For Glory" VGA remake). It might just be simpler to do the games separately. Don't take my answer as an official response though.

There's isn't currently an SDA category that would work for a multi-game gauntlet; but you can certainly submit individual runs of each game that use imported characters (which would be separate categories from run with fresh characters).

Thanks for the info. Want to see my QFG4 run get verified before I realm start such a massive undertaking.
...and if you do that, it's called new game +. However, I think to do a NG+ you're expected to get maxed stats and do everything you can in the previous game in order to make it through the next one as fast as possible. Perhaps this is not at all what you would have done if you could have submitted the kind of run you envisioned.

As for game versions: you can choose whichever one if the difference is greater than just changing the version number (i.e. patches). Otherwise choose the fastest patch if available. That's how I gather that goes.

It's an interesting problem, because stats don't copy over perfectly between games if I remember right. Certain games, I believe, will raise your stats to certain minimal requirements. If the key stats needed for the run do copy correctly, it might fit into a kind of NG+ Low% run. It should only be about 2.5 to 3 hours based on the combined times I have in my head, which is much shorter than some runs on SDA.  My major question involved categorization. It's a shame. I seriously doubt a five-game SS run submitted as five individual runs would be optimized in the same way five time dedicated runs would work.

Oh well. To hell with worrying about. I'll likely do it anyway. :D. It's not like there is a raging competition on this series anyway. Smiley  I haven't seen a novelty like this anywhere either.

Despite what I used to think, QFG2 suffers least from RNG. QFG1 is the worst because of the constant barrage of random encounters in the forest. QFG3 and 5 are easiest because of the random encounter system implementation.  QFG4 is a matter of memorization of screens and paying attention.
It'll surely be a YouTube hit either way! Cheesy You can post about it in casual running or wherever.
I've actually done a run of this before: Wizard 100% (almost, missed 2 points in QFG3) in 5h38m58s. The VOD is at http://www.twitch.tv/puri_puri/c/5456322 .  An Any% 1-5 import run would likely be around 3 to 3.5 hours.
There you go guys! You need to get it on on SRL.

Hey puri. I didn't know you were on here.  I commented on your QFG4 Wizard Any% run, and posted mine on speedrun.com.  Also a big fan of your QFG2 run; didn't know it would be that easy to do 2.  Smiley

Was that run you did single segment?
Always move forward, never sleep.
Is the remake of 1 vastly different from the original?  I've only played the remake.  There's also a recent remake of 2 out there as well, which takes a lot of the maze parts of the streets out, but it's been so long since I've played the original that I can't remember all, if any, other differences.

Text parsing is the biggest, as far as the game play goes.

Well, almost three months later, and I have the original four games Any% run of the anthology done at around 1:26:35 if you cut out load times between games.  Adding in QFG5 (which is going to be a problem for me to record, as I do not have a standard monitor size) should add about an hour max (I haven't started practicing that one yet), I'd be looking closer to under 2.5 hours.

Run was done entirely as a Thief, just because they are consistently the fastest character in pretty much every game.

There were plenty of mistakes and optimizations I can work on, plus a few ultimately unnecessary safety saves in QFG2 (and one death with an auto-save on the same screen that cost about 10 seconds), but the times are only about 1-2 minutes off my personal bests in each game even with the difference in stats.  I'm not sure I'll be able to make up the difference in time in QFG2 and 3 only because I have to be more cautious there, but in QFG1 and QFG4 there is very little difference (and actually some benefit in QFG4 thanks to spells you normally do not get in a new game).

Working on the massive encode now.  Grin  lol  Will post a link here and in 'casual running' to the Youtube video when its uploaded.

Still in processing.  Hope it's enjoyed.  How annoying is this... I tested the encode, and the sound is WAY off when it starts the second game.  Not sure what that is about.  I'll leave this up here for now, but it'll be unlisted on Youtube until I can figure it out.  Am going to redo the encode.  Only thing I can think of that could have caused it was my deletion of a couple of misclicks before QFG2 starts where I accidentally start a new game.  I'll leave it in, just for kicks, and see if that fixes it.

Alright, no idea why Youtube did not like that file, but the encode on Youtube's side failed.  Did another run this morning for kicks and runs about 1:26:23; about 12 seconds faster.  No audio desync either.  If Youtube accepts the encode, and only after it is done processing, I will post a video link.

Up and ready.  I'll be moving this discussion over to casual now.  Smiley  Thanks for everyone's help.
