I'm thinking of trying for a run through Quake II on the N64.  Is anyone intrested at all?
Thread title:
like cranky kong, but not as nice
this should be a good one for running; actually considered doing it myself, briefly, but wasn't sure if it would count since most people are interested in the pc quake games.  are you thinking of ss, or level-by-level?
Just a small question:

Is "Quake II N64" a direct port, or does it differ from "Quake II PC"?

I to feel that this would make a good game to speedrun. It can be completed pretty quickly, and should be action packed enough to keep people interested in watching it to the end.

To be honest I'm not sure yet wether I'll go level by level or SS.  If I do it SS then I'm definatley going to do it on easy, at least to begin with.  The enemies definatley have the tendancy to block your path and on the harder difficulty settings, when this happens, you tend to lose alot of health very quickly simply due to bad luck.

Quake II on the 64, while based on the Quake "Universe" was built up from scratch to accomadate the weaker N64 hardware.  While you might see the occasional area here or there that reminds you of a part in the PC Version - by and large its a totally unique game.

Thanks, you can add me to the "people who would like to see the run" list.

Well I went through a little test run of the first 11 levels (there are 19 all up) and did it in 11min 25 seconds.  I really haven't attempted to speed run many levels past that point but I can already tell that they will take longer so I think a reasonable time to aim for at the moment is around 25 minutes.  I learnt a few things along the way.

1) Monsters will always walk into your path at the worst possible moment
2) Rocket Jumping is not a good idea if I do a single segment, unless the payoff is reasonably big.  I have no problems with Rocket Jumping on the PC but on the N64 the control isn't as good, but more importantly the frame-rate tends to jerk at the wrong times making the jumps hard to pull off.
3) Level 9 seems to have a single digit frame-rate for 2/3rds of the level - fun.
4) Level 11 has really poor framerate at about the time there is a rocketjump available that will save you 10 - 15 seconds.  Damn.
Can you doublejump in the N64 version?

If you'd like times to compare vs, at least on single levels...  check out www.geocities.com/n64highscores

there are individual level runs there.
