Hey Ho Let's Go
I'm starting this thread as an addition to the contest updates we post on the main Quake page of SDA since most of you guys in here only follows the threads on the forum, but not the actual Quake page.

From the main page:

It's that time of year again. Yep, we're running our third non-consecutive contest of 2009. It's a bit of a silly contest really, but still loads of fun, and easy to master. It will take place on a map that's been contested before (hence the named re-visited in the headline) all the way back in 2001, but this time only the Easy Run will be contested as opposed to the Easy 100% in the old contest. It will surely end up as a "fightning against the fractions" battle for the top spot (if anyone submits a demo that is).

The map in question is Shambler Hell by Evan Wagner

Contests index:

Shambler Hell (Re-visited) page:

P.S. The contest is so easy that even a newbie can enter without too much hassle.

Post if you get get a 0:02 imo.

I got one!
Hey Ho Let's Go
Just to start things off, and to show whoever might be new to speedrunning Quake how this silly little map is run. Just do it faster than I did in this demo  of course ;-)

(see attached file)

Since everyone will more or less get the same time anyway (2 seconds something), it'd be cool to see some demos posted in here.

Walking?

Come on guys, let's see some demos!  Even if you never played you should be able to do reasonably well on this map!

Is there a way to auto record demo when loading a level, it's kinda hard to press "C" (record) space and Q(rocket) in half a second really quick.

EDIT: I did it in 3.5, It would be nice to know how to auto recordemo

You can type this in the console:

Example 1:
Quote:
bind WHATEVERBUTTON "record nameofmap nameofdemo"

Example 2:
Quote:
bind C "record wot wot"

I got 2, also. Grin

I really can't be bothered to try any longer. I'll get RSI.

Got 2.
Hey Ho Let's Go
Darn... I'm still stuck at .02

I'd give my left nut to whoever can make Quake run smoothly at 72 fps on my computer.

I assume you've turned VSync off in your video drivers? I assume vid_vsync is at 0?
Hey Ho Let's Go
Yes and yes. Trust me, I've tried a million things. I even had Mandel looking into it when he was visiting, and when a computer whiz like him can't fix the problem, I doubt anyone can :-)
it's a case of what we in Sweden call "skit bakom spakarna"  Wink

Sounds like lodis wants to taste my trout...

Hey Lodis, you got Quake installed at all these days? You're posting with an unheard of frequence in the forum, this must mean something! I have a number of demos in the next update as you will see  Grin

Speaking of update... Dex? Nahk? Lag? Morfans? Anyone? Come on you guys it's been almost two months!! Nolan?
Invisible avatar
Mandel: we're delaying the update slightly because we're adding some stuff soon and want to do a bigass update with most things in :).
don't read too much into it mandel Smiley
but I have done a demo for the contest!
Mumma
Lodis: cool!

Y'all: is there a specific, consistent trick to get a firsttime as low as Relomy does in his walking demo? I can't get below 1.4 whatever I try...

- quake installed on ram disk
- gl_picmip set to 8
- no 2d graphics overlay (crosshair, sbar, console etc)
- no vsync

nothing seems to work. Still stuck on 3.00 and not having much fun with it.

Hehe, welcome to the club :-)

My JoeQuake timer thing has always shown 1.2.. I assumed that was normal.  (It's incredibly close to 1.3 for sure, that's what Jason's shows.)

I don't have any special settings turned on (or off) that I know of.

It should start at high 1.3/low 1.4 O_o.

I can cut a little bit of time by doing software + r_drawflat 1, but it's literally spare change.

Using hfr as low as like .00000001 it shows 1.3 on my walking demo, so I'm guessing it's only some sort of visual problem I have when it shows 1.2.

Current demo starting times:[tt]
Relomy: 1.31885040
  Lag: 1.33496201
Rutger: 1.34996331
Stubby: 1.39394021
  Ajax: 1.50608778
[/tt]not that much different except for Ajax, but on a map like this...

Darn! Between me and Relomy it's a HUUUGE margin! This could explain why I find it very hard to even get .0 while it seems easy for others to get under 3 seconds within a matter of minutes :-/

Is there any way to lower your starting time just a notch WITHOUT cheating?
sda loyalist
A quick glance through the source code says 'no'.
Hey Lag. How did you check the starting times? I still couln't get below 3s  Undecided
sda loyalist
I just ran all the demos through lmpc and checked what the first timestamp was.
