I watched the 21:06 run on VideoGoogle a long time ago, and ever since I’ve been wondering something:
Why is there no bunnyhop used in that run?

I can see some strafejumps but other that that it's just normal running.
Am I missing something or was there a reason for this?

there is even a thread about Q2-bunnies here on SDA, so I'm really confused.
I thought I'd ask here since the run was produced by the "QdQ project".

And couldn't this run be easily improved by simply using bhop?
Thread title:

I believe that you could,

From the text file (http://speeddemosarchive.com/quake/qdq/textfiles/q2dq2.txt),

Quote:
To proceed through Quake2 as quickly as possible, a player needs
to bunny-hop non-stop. Some people, including several of the Q2dQ2
team members, find the results unattractive. There was also a concern
that the effectiveness of the technique is frame-rate dependent, which
would have meant that in order to get the best times, a player had to
have as fast a computer system as possible. This would have introduced
undesirable unfairness to speed-running.

There is another Quake 2 run which uses bunnies; it's even linked from this site. Maddash 2 - by Colin "Mr M" Moore. Check out http://speeddemosarchive.com/Quake2.html

Sorry, I forgot about this because I started playing Quake (1) for the very first time of my life a few weeks ago and I really enjoy it! Darn good...That's why I haven't posted...

Oh, thanks for that explanation!

How do you play these demos? I put the demo-folder in my Quake2-folder, type "game maddash2" then I type "map 1_base1.dm2" and then I get this error:
Quote:
error: configstring > max_configstrings

Wrong version of Quake2 or what is this problem?

In the text-file in Maddash2 there is a comment:
Quote:
Now proceed into the demos directory
and something called "demoplay" (which I've failed to find anywhere).
What is "demoplay" and how do I play these demos?

Thanks in advance...
the command for playing back demos in q2 is called "demomap"
you should be able to get it working this way
18 to the diablo2 holy grail
also part of this goes back to the "old days" when tricks were based on many things but when bunnying started to break all the older times there was resistance to letting it go unchecked.  Runners delight, a custom pack made for quake1 speedrunning specifically disabled bunnying as it was shunned at the time (of course later a mod to put bunnying in there was released) those quake2 demos also came at the height of the anti bunny histeria and thats why it isn't bunny bunny everywhere.

Of course quake 2 running never really got going after those projects took off (which is a shame).  The whole unit based thing made things tricky as well,  where individual runs would be tough to compare.

I don't think there is anyone really anti bunny left now?

Except those of us who can’t (as yet!) manage it consistently :nana:

Only joking…
I posted a new bunny hop method for quake 2 recently, check it out:
