Benjamin 'UraniumAnchor' Cutler's run

Verifier Responses

The first verifier thought the run was good except for the first stage, which didn't use the TAS strategy. However, once the runner improved the first stage, this is what he had to say.

Quote:
Verifier: the new first segment of the PoP run is great. Sort of strange that it only took like a day to get but it wasn't done the first time around, but in any case, the run is ready to go, imo

Great run, it seems like the runner had well-optimized movement (which is annoying in this game), and implemented whatever could be used from the TAS, like the instant boss kill glitch in stage 19. There were a couple of mistakes here and there, but most were quite minor and didn't cost much time at all.

There is no audio or video probems that I noticed

This is a very fine run. You can tell the runner has great knowlegde of the game and has spent quite some time with it. (speedrunning or not) After quite some consideration though I am going to REJECT it.

My feeling is that the route is perfect but execution can be tighter. There is at least a second that is able to be shaven off each level. Ultimatly 20+ seconds off of a segmented run is too much time to ignore.

This is one of those times you may have been better off to bite your tongue.

The timing on the crusher at the end is *possible* to make better, but I tried for a good half hour and couldn't get it to work. The timing on it is either too precise or I couldn't figure out the trick.

If you know its possible, you should have spent a couple days nailing down the timing. If it ended up more of a luck thing, make a hundred attempts at it until you get it. The level is only 1:16 seconds!

Dont get me wrong YOU are the man for the job, with this much effort it would be a shame for you not to improve it further. Just take more risk at each enemy encounter and make more attempts. If I saw this first run accepted I would be tempted to improve it. I couldnt say that if it were 20+ seconds better. Wink

The haste with which you improved the 1st segment also weighed in on my decision.

This is what I shot back.

Aside from that Crusher issue, I'm not sure where there is time to be saved. There are only two places I can think of that have visible improvements.

Stage 3: I think he grabbed a ledge too early, he probably could have grabbed a lower ledge.

Stage 17: He whiffed a hit against the boss. I'm not sure that fixing this would save a second though.

This was his response.

I was wondering if you were the third verifier, because there were only two names in heading.

First off, my apologies, but I never repurchased this game after having it stolen. My judgement is based on my intuition of his play. To be honest, I just have a "feeling" this is not his fastest effort. This game is on "rails" so regardless of which strategy he uses for a level its going to look fluid. My instinct tells me he used his skills at this game, found a reasonable safe method for each level, and made a few attempts till he did it perfectly. The alternative being, picking the BEST route and spending more time practicing and making even more attempts.

That said, this run is SDA quality, as I mentioned it is very good.

My intuition was correct last time, even though it was accepted. However this run does stand on its own, I just wish he'd make it better. He knows he can.

If you wanted to give me more time to verify what I'm saying Ill go pick up a copy.

Decision: Accept

Reason: It's a tight run, even the verifier who wanted to rejected the run admitted as such.

By 'possible' I mean that I know there's a level of precision that lets you avoid falling onto the floor, and by 'a half an hour' I mean doing state reloads in an emulator. I couldn't reproduce it in real time with any kind of reliability. I might revisit this, since the game is basically an IL table, the way I did it. I'm more tempted to do a 100% run (all life extension potions, no sword skip), if there's any interest in that.

As for the sword skip, I mostly didn't like it because it's not a demonstration of skill so much as luck. After trying it for a while as practice and not being able to get it, I decided to just skip it and work on a good level strategy instead. After some experimentation I figured out that there's a two-frame window on the timing on both of those jumps. Then again, speed is speed, and 2+ minutes is a pretty huge difference on a run this short, so I understand why people wanted to see this.

Edit: Also, haha at 'a few attempts'. I think he's underestimating how easy it is to screw up in this game, I spent at least 8 hours recording level 5, not counting practice runs on my emulator. Not only can the guards dick you over (the normal guard AI is somewhat predictable, but it'll still throw you a curveball with annoying frequency... I'd say at least a third of my restarts were because guard combat took too long or I took unintentional damage) but some of the tricks I have to use in this game require split second timing. I can't even begin to count how many times I was trying to do the skid-grab off a ledge and ended up sailing off the edge and dying, or turned around too early and ended up a tile away from where I needed to be and facing the wrong way. Wink

I understand his complaints, but I think he might be asking too much of a real-time run.
100% runs=great to watch
So awesome!  Bolsters my hopes indirectly that the oft forgotten, but greatest in a musical sense, Prince of Persia GBA will one day join this 2D Prince on SDA.  Great job on this run!
Just a note to say there is absolutely interest in a 100% if you're still up for it (especially SS).  The SNES version has always been my favorite; I was so pleased to see someone run it.  Thank you.
