Nope, it's not encoded yet. My time is very limited lately due to work and personal stuff. I'm still without a car, so I can't get a capture card (I'm short on money as well) and I can't get to my friend's house to encode either. so I'm probably going to have to send the tape away to get encoded, which is fine by me.

I've tried to contact Radix by PM and IRC, but don't have much luck for actually contacting him due to the limited spare time I have to chat at home (usually in the middle of the night). So I'll be emailing.

I have a few questions before I go through the email about the run, since I know some could be answered here. Questions about it being submitted, if it follows the rules, etc.

First, the lowdown of the run:

Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and the Flame
Platform: PC, but recorded from XBox POP: Sands of Time
Total Gameplay Time: 33:36
Nine Segments
48 mins remaining

I guess the main issue I want squared away is if the game can be submitted although I recorded it from the XBox.

I recorded from XBox for several reasons. For the most part, I can't get the PC version running like it should. As in, it crashes regularly when I run it with sound, the music is quite tinny, and the game has major slowdown when the game didn't slowdown in a pure DOS enviornment. Thus, I don't want to use that method.

The XBox version is pretty much the exact same version of the game. Runs at the same speed as a DOS PC. No slowdown, same timing, etc. All of the same tricks I pull off on the XBox can be done on the PC. I know because I practiced on the PC at work with no sound.

The XBox version of the game (like I said, unlockable in SoT), has a few differences. They are:

-Different midi instruments, not as good as the PC. This doesn't effect gameplay though.
-You can't enter your name at the end, since I don't have a keyboard attached. So I get stuck there, and don't have any high scores recorded. Doesn't effect gameplay.
-After you get the flame at the end, the game doesn't give you control of the Prince properly. You have to pause/unpause and you can control the game again. It effects gameplay, but to my disadvantage (even if it's for a split second).

So, would my run be allowed? I could recreate the run if I had a method of getting the PC version to run like a true DOS enviornment. But the crashes suck, and definitely the slowdown is an issue. The slowdown happens when doors open, guards die in lava pits, severe slowdown after playing cutscenes with sound, and more.

And if anyone has any questions on the game I'll answer them as well.

I'm sure I'll have more questions about recording and stuff, but I'm off to work again. I do have the internet at work, but don't have much time. So I can do quick replies and read the thread at least. It's been very busy lately (I manage a Mr Sub restaurant, and all of the Subways in the city closed up, you do the math).

On a side note, my EWJ run has been put on hold for a long while, due to lack of time. Yes, I had time for a different run, but a POP2 segmented run is much easier than a single segment EWJ run. EWJ is much tougher, and requires exact movement at a quick pace. I did get a new Genesis, but it came with brutal controllers that make playing EWJ a chore. When I get to a second hand store again I'll get a different controller, I'll continue. But when I started the EWJ run I had much more spare time. Now I find it hard to play for 45 mins without interruptions of any kind.

At least I have a day off tomorrow. Hopefully I can find time to do stuff. Proabably not. :|
Thread title:
i like to watch.
since gameboy remakes of super nes/famicom games are allowed, i assume this would be too. i could be assuming totally wrong, though.
I'm addicted to games
So it's just an unlockable that comes with popsot, only on xbox? Sounds like metroid in metroid prime or the various games in animal crossing: perfectly fine.
Groovy.  Grin That's what I was hoping to hear.

Yup, it's an unlockable. Where you unlock POP1 in SOT on the other versions unlocks POP2 on the XBox, and you get POP1 by beating the game. The best unlockable in a game yet IMHO.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Smiley Nice to hear that its allowed.
give me your eyes!!!
Could you have a go at PoP1 too? Roll Eyes

I tried it for ages and failed miserably about half way through so it'd be nice to see.

PoP 1 has been done already I guess Its close to perfection as I don't see any other way to do it quicker than that. However I'd love to see the SNES version been runned.

I have the SNES version of POP1 perfected, so it wouldn't be a problem. But, there's a tool assisted run for POP1 for the SNES, so I didn't see the point. :| Though I could've used some of my patented POP1 tricks to shave some seconds or even minutes off of the tool assisted time anyways.

Just came back from the lake over the long weekend (it's Thanksgiving today in Canada). I'll continue with the submission process for POP2 today or tomorrow (gotta go to work right away).
i like to watch.

i am a big fan of seeing tool-assisted runs bested by skill-assisted runs. you could give hope to the world.

The tool assisted run is pretty decent, but when I watched it, I kept saying "He could've done that better/faster." The only thing the tool assisted would do better is swordfighting, since playing it on the game normally tends to be a lot more random in attacks. Especially Jaffar.

Prince of Persia is one of the SNES games I've played the most. I even played it to the death of the large screen TV at the time, when the tube blew. Wink
give me your eyes!!!
But PoP2 has also been done already!

I guess you'll just have to do both then Wink

The tool assisted one is the SNES one. The SNES version is brutal, missing levels, horrible controls and game mechanics, and missing almost all of the cinematics. I'm doing the PC/XBox version, much better. I have no desire to even attempting to play through the SNES version again, let alone speedrunning it.

Besides that SNES POP2 tool assisted run (along with the Genesis POP1n run) is VERY cheap. It's impossible to jump or run through enemies in the real game, at least unless it's glitchy as hell like the SNES version of POP2.

Other stuff like running right over the tile that you have to jump over to get into the caverns and have it not sink, running right off of edges and not get impaled by spikes, running through doors, and more makes the run just not even fun to watch as it pulls off stuff that's impossible to do on a real version of the game.

Believe me, my run of 33 minutes will be much more entertaining than a super cheap 11 minute glitch and emulator fest.
give me your eyes!!!
I'm sure it would be, I was just checking.

I need to make sure because once I've watched a game I have no desire to watch it again done slightly faster
(unless the exception is too great like LeCoureur's Mario64 of course ;D).

Cool. Well, let's just say that for those who have only seen the SNES version before, you're in for a treat. Like I said before the SNES version of POP2 is quite possibly the worst PC to console port ever made.

That's one of the reasons why I'm doing this speedrun, and having a segment of cutscenes only. This way those that only know the SNES version will actually get to see more than three cutscenes.

Some reasons why the tool assisted run is faster:

-The final battle isn't even in the game! That's why there's no Life Expansion pickups on the SNES run. On the actual PC version, you need at least 11 life bottles to turn into the shadow and be able to shoot a fireball at Jaffar to finish the game.
-The SNES version is VERY glitchy. Running right through enemies, terrible hit detection for tiles, slow dart shooters, slow falling speed for tiles, etc. The runner uses these glitches all the time, when it's not humanly possible to do that on a real SNES.
-Being able to run right up against a wall instead of stopping. As well as running through doors. Very buggy.

Anyways, I'm done ranting. Just so everyone knows, don't judge POP2 on the SNES version. It's a very unfair judgement. The original game is one of the best made games ever. And one of the most fun. Highly recommended.

I'll work on a run for POP1 for the SNES though. I was doing pretty good last night, but had to go to bed. I was at Level 11 in 22:42 with only two life expansions. Hopefully I have time to work on it some more today.
