My feelings on The Demon Rush
Before I start this thread up. Yes, I took a few things from the viewer's suggestion thread. If you notice I didn't use something from that thread, then that most likely means the suggestion was ignored for a reason.

The person after the dash is the person who came up with the idea. If I forgot anyone, then I'm sorry.

The stream and setup:

Dedicated page for donation bids, prizes, runner info, profiles + their ustreams and youtube channels, also some sort of
listing for types of runs (multiplayer, races, and genre). - Darkwing Duck for the donation bids, various people on IRC for the rest

This should be self-explanatory. Yes, Darkwing Duck you made one good suggestion, don't push your luck. Tongue

Also have an faq explaining basic info like where we are, how to put in a chipin comment, explanation of speedrunning terms, etc.

Also self-explanatory.

Multicast on ustream and justin.tv - Josh the funkdoc

We'll definitely have enough bandwidth for this during the day, but at night the bandwidth is cut roughly in half, so we'll have to see.

Bots to inform people what's up periodically - Rakuen

This is honestly a great idea, and one of the few redeeming suggestions from the viewer's suggestion thread.

Commentators have priority on couch - PJ

I know, the couch is comfy, but there were a lot of times when people would just sit on the couch not saying much of anything, and there were people commentating on the run from the back, where it was sometimes hard to hear people. This doesn't mean people on the couch need to get off stream if someone wants to commentate, they merely need to get off the couch.

Commentary chain of command - I think we talked about this before the marathon, but it wasn't really implemented

Basically the priority should go runner > commentators on couch (if they're talking about the game) > person on commentator chair reading off donation comments > everyone else

Have people who set up video tell others about the setup. - me

Yes, Nate and Lag.Com were great at setting up the stream and handling tech duties, I don't think anyone can deny that, but if they told more people how the cables and computers were setup, then we wouldn't have needed to kill their sleep for races and such. A lot of us have experience streaming, so if they told at least 5 people how the cables were setup, then we wouldn't need to rely on them so much.

Cleaning up the console/video capture setup - nate

Quote from nate:
no switchers. single set of female rca plugs permanently attached below each tv. everyone knows how to plug their system into that set of cables for that tv.

nuff said.

More UPSes! and power strips - everyone at the marathon

We all know that PEACHES_ UPS saved Chrono Trigger. If there's a big enough surplus fund next year, then I'll set aside a couple hundred dollars for some UPSes and power strips.

Don't mess with the marathon setup while a run is taking place - Carcinogen and arkarian, by accident

Seriously, there's no reason to touch anything near the marathon consoles unless if your plane leaves in a couple of hours. Getting your stuff in between games is fine, but fiddling around trying to find your stuff is what causes accidents like Power-off during YI and video switch during Chrono Trigger. We're just lucky that YI has an auto-save.

Challenge Submission form? - Rakuen

Quote from Rakuen:
Actually, on that challenge front, here's another idea pulled from Desert Bus for Hope.  They had a system for viewers to submit challenges for them to do.  It's just pretty much a series of text boxes where you can enter your name, some sort of contact, a donation amount, and what you want to be done.  Then all that goes neatly into their system, where they can approve or deny challenge as they saw fit.  It gets the requests out of the chat and in a single focused area where it's very easy to manage.  I think if we have the ability to do this, we should.

I'm not 100% sure about this being a good idea because of possible abuse, but getting people's challenges heard in chat is only going to get worse, so it probably is a good idea.

Let's have a clock in the marathon room - Uraniumanchor

In a basement room with no windows, you lose track of time way too easily. The marathon room turned into the hyperbolic time chamber/isolation station/speedrunning dungeon after a while because no one had any track of night or day. Putting a clock should alleviate the situation somewhat, until the big question pops up, AM or PM?

Pop-out windows for the streams - me

I know some people had problems getting both streams to stay side by side, so the best way to handle this problem would be to make the streams pop-out windows. This solution shouldn't be hard to implement, since I think I've seen the Desert Bus for Hope people do it.

Basic game history and trivia - Tigger77

This idea was mentioned for AGDQ, but no one took up this responsibility (it shouldn't be mine). Emptyeye said he was willing to write up basic info for every game in the marathon, and I think he'd do a good job of it. It would probably be a good idea if someone split up the task with him.

Schedule

First off, I want to say one thing. Being over time is not necessarily a bad thing, a decent chunk of overtime was donation challenges, it also gave time for moments like stanski's epic turtles 4 donation, and it did give people more time to watch That being said, I will admit that the schedule did go way too far over time.

The big three culprits were

1. Setup time, including prizes and such.

2. People giving me bad estimates for games, or estimates that were way too tight.

3. Donation challenges. This isn't a bad thing, because these brought in a lot of money for PCF. Smiley

Every day gets an hour for a game called setup.

It's going to happen, so the best way to deal with it, is just to admit that it happens for at least an hour a day. This won't completely normalize the schedule, but it should help.

Don't make your time estimates so tight - a lot of people, but especially me

There were a lot of people who went under their estimates, but their estimates were so tight they were maybe a minute or two under their estimates at most, and the time for setting up their game cost a greater amount of time.

I will admit, I am guilty of this for Contra 3.

Every run at the marathon gets at least 3-5 minutes added for setup, possibly 10+ minutes for longer games and randomness- me, then 156 other people in the viewer's suggestion thread. :-/

The setup time should depend on the game and whether the system it's being played on is the same as the system before it. Also races get extra setup time. At least one or two OOT racers complained about 1:30 being too long despite a lot of them being able to complete the game in 1:12-1:15, but looking back on it, I think that was a good time considering we had 4 tvs and 4 consoles to setup.

Announce prizes near the end of a game, not in between games - mike89

Honestly, this should have been done this year because mike89 suggested after CGDQ, but I didn't yell at enough people about it beforehand. I remember doing it for some of the games I commentated for, and I know Breakdown did it once or twice, but after a while, we all started announcing prizes in between games. Announcing prize winners in between games slows down time at least a minute or so in between games, which adds up over 100 games.

I know for super short games that are 10 minutes or less, this idea isn't really possible unless if we want to talk over the runner a lot, but we can definitely do it for any game that is 15 minutes or longer.

Have your game ready before the next one - me, dballin, everyone at the marathon who had their stuff ready beforehand

A lot of times, people wouldn't get their stuff until after a game was over, which means they were at least 5 minutes too late getting their stuff. Angry

For some bizarre reason, a couple of people felt like they had to ask for my permission to get their stuff ready. This pissed me off because you already had my permission when I PUT YOUR GAME ON THE SCHEDULE, and asking me only wastes time. If you want to make me happy, get your stuff ready at least 10 minutes before your game approaches.

Tigger77 had the great idea of having a "next game" table for the equipment being used for the next game.

If you're ready to play your game, then play dammit! - me, inspired by watching Tri-Hex's 6 minute wait before his YI run, which sadly, is an improvement over the 15 minute prepation for his CGDQ run

Sorry to put you on the spot, Tri-Hex, but you are the worst offender. No one really needs to be ready aside from the person (or people) playing the game. If the person on the timer isn't ready, it's not a huge deal, they can just start the timer a little late.

There are only two reasons not to start playing right away.

1. The stream is down.

2. Your game has a bidding war for a character or path and we need to know which one it is.

Aside from that, there is no excuse.

The Halo rule - me, I actually had this rule in for the first marathon

Yep, I had a mercy kill rule since the first marathon. I just didn't mention it during this marathon because I assumed everyone would know better and practice their games enough. Well Halo proved me wrong. There's no use trying to deny it, Halo was a bad run, and it should have been killed, especially since Cody wasn't enjoying it, and he admitted on stream that he hadn't practiced in 2 years.

There's no objective way to sense whether a run should be mercy killed or not, it just comes down to common sense. I also don't think this will be a problem for more than one or two games next year, if even that many.

Some other runs went over time, but they were well played for the most part, so there was no reason to kill them.

Yes, I did get permission from Cody to call the mercy kill rule the Halo rule.

Try to account for donation challenges beforehand, and not have them proposed to me the day of the marathon

The donation challenges proposed to me were great ideas. However, the challenges also added at least a couple of hours to the schedule we could have accounted for if I knew about the challenges in advance.

Do realize we will still be behind, even after implementing all of these measures, just hopefully not as much. I also realize what lag.com did to compensate the discrepancy between run time and real-time in the schedule was a smart idea (overwrite the formula with the actual current time), but I was too dumb to realize at the time, sorry.

Prizes

Setup all of the prizes and implement time schedules in advance. (i.e. dk plushies going for dkc series)

Part of this was my fault, because I forgot to account for a couple of prizes, and some weren't scheduled very well. It was, after all, my first time actually putting prizes in the schedule. However, we should set up the schedules for prizes in advance so there's no confusion during the marathon.

We should have some 10 dollar donation prizes, like the newer games, larger perlers, and plushies

Hey, they're worth well over 10 dollars. We should still keep the minimum bid for pictures at 5 dollars so people still feel like they can win something without having to spend much.

Travel

Only one thing to say here, we need a coordinator. Not just a person who keeps track of the forum topic (and the person overseeing the topic shouldn't be me, romscout Angry ), but a person who also makes sure everyone arrives at the center quickly and safely.

4-H Center stuff:

Individual check-in - memememe

I thought checking in for the group would be best, because I'm the guy who runs the marathons, and I thought I would need to keep the rooming under control, but it ended up just being a big hassle. Whenever someone needed a keycard, their keycard crapped out, or they wanted to switch rooms, I had to be there, which is not only inconvenient for me, but it's also inconvenient for the people involved because they had to wait on me.

4 people per room, at the most 5 people - uhhhh nearly everyone

Seriously, the rooming was way too chaotic. Things will be much easier for us if we cap rooming at the 4 it's supposed to be at, for both us and the center, especially since the system at the center is only equipped for four people per room (for fire code reasons).

Don't be pigs - me, Breakdown, anyone with a sense of decency

Seriously, with how lax the center was with us, the least we could do is CLEAN UP AFTER OURSELVES. The people taking out trash should just be replacing trash bags, not picking up after us because someone was too lazy to put their cup or pizza box in the trash. Also, it's just gross to see so much stuff on the floor, especially when ants swarm it.

Chat

Private staff chat channel - a bunch of people

This is something I should have at least suggested for AGDQ, but if someone else sets it up before the marathon, that would be great.

How do we deal with how fast chat is? - everyone

First off, slow mode is NOT the solution - it interrupts the flow and just makes a lot of people post super long messages, which doesn't fix the problem in the long run.

If we have the submissions form then I guess this is moot for donation challenges, but we'll still want to keep chat under control. Like moooh said, putting everything in one super huge chat doesn't necessarily solve problems because it means everything in that one super huge chat scrolls impossibly fast.

Misc

Have someone scout the area for restaurants and take-out places that are close to the center - puwexil

I was going to do this, but then I got sidetracked. I think someone else will do this because I'll probably want to do this, but end up focusing on more urgent marathon matters instead.

In-kind donations - The kind folks at the Prevent Cancer Foundation

During our lunch with PCF, Linda mentioned that we can get in-kind donations (i.e. anything that isn't money) such as furniture or food to be used for our marathon. The example she gave us is that Subway donated 500 dollars for a race for the cure jogging marathon PCF hosted.

Needless to say, Breakdown and I stared at each other and thought this was a very good idea.

I think that covers most issues.

Shoutouts to room 5216, which was home to I think 9 different people during this marathon.

Anyways, I agree with everything on this list, Mike.  I'm especially excited for the prospect of an in-kind donation from Subway.  We totally deserve that one.  I think we single-handedly kept that one location in business during that week.

Edit:  I think we should maybe make a point before next marathon to remind the commentator chair to give speaking priority to the runners.  Rane did a really great job commentating during the graveyard shifts, but SGnG was more or less inaudible except for him (don't mean to point you out, Rane!).  Never hurts to keep that in mind when the runner is as quiet as kareshi.  ^_^
My feelings on The Demon Rush
Oh good idea, PJ. The priority should definitely be runner -> commentator chair -> commentators on couch -> everyone else
I want off the ride....
I'm going to say this and this is more or less something we should look into...

GROW A VOICE IF YOUR COMMENTATING or RUNNING A GAME. I know some people are naturally quiet but we dont all need to hear  M T I's OVERPOWERING voice whenever the runner wants to speak. Its OK. Its your game. Talk about it! TROLL THE CHAT! THEY LOVE IT {see mike blowing on the mic}.
Fucking Weeaboo
One other big thing is system handling.  This stemmed from 2 problems: 1, too much power drain/not enough plugs.  I remember us having numerous problems, mainly with multiple PS3s going (RE5, SotN) and 2, pulling systems during games.  I know this goes along with your "setup time per day" thing, Mike.  Also, if we change how we handle system setup, it may keep the mess of wires down a bit.  I don't think we need to keep ONLY the systems we're using at the time down there, but yeah, it was a mess.  It also got confusing near the end to try to deal with things (which is why like while Lag and Mercury were trying to get her cube going, I just sat there.  I looked at it and honestly went "No way I'm gonna figure this mess out.").

Oh!  VG's post just reminded me about something.  We should try to remember to actually turn off our consoles after we are done with our run.  Haha.  I think that caused the interference during the Snake Rattle 'n Roll run, right?  I thought the wavy lines were from another console being on at the same time at least...

Regardless, I know after the Btoads race, I saw that Contra 3 was still running on the SNES at my feet.  At some point after the SotN race, one or more of the PS3's were still running (not saying they were from SotN, I just know we noticed this some time afterwards).  Just something to keep in mind.

LOL yeah, I think I had a 10 hour game of Contra 3 going there. I'm the worst offender, going over estimate. You guys also reminded me of something else. Get more UPSes for the next marathon! Just having mine and PEACHES_ wasn't enough. Yes, I brought mine over, but most people didn't see it because it was being used for all of the computers.

VG: I know Nate had some good idea involving the video cables, but I can't remember exactly what it is anymore. Also, I disagree, we at least need one of each console on hand (maybe not on the floor though), because we sometimes had the problem of not being able to find the right console for the game that was being run.
SEGA Junkie
I guess given this is kinda related I should post about what I think really worked this year and what didn't compared to last year.

Obviously given this marathon raised five times (!) as much as the last one we did a lot more things right this year, but here's a few that come to mind immediately:
* PRIZES. The prize selection was legitimately worth donating for this year, and while I loved Lindsay King's artwork (from both years) it's a nice memento of the marathon but not as compelling a prize as a copy of the game being played, or a Metroid, or THAT FREAKING TANK. So massive thanks to Aitamen and MercuryZelda for making prizes worth donating fooooooor, and Mike for miscalculating everyone's expenses so he could buy more prizes!
* Promotion. All the promotion I remember from last year is some time around December us going "you know, we really should make sure some people know about this thing", and Breakdown stitching together a promo video at the last minute. This year we had a plan and it really got around, 4000+ viewers can't be wrong.

What didn't work/what we can improve:
* The schedule is the obvious one... I'd like to reiterate what Mike said about going over not being a bad thing in and of itself, but when things have to be moved around because people aren't going to be at the venue at the time when they're supposed to do their runs, that's when you know you have a problem. Better estimates + designated setup time will honestly clear up most of this issue. Even notwithstanding that though, we know that no matter what we do the marathon is likely to run over time, so I'd like to suggest that the marathon be scheduled to finish in the middle of the day, so we don't have issues with people having to leave early again.
* Tigger77's idea was a really good one, but one we just didn't end up having the time to implement. If Emptyeye's said he's willing to put together part of such a list, I'll help him out on that.
* Stream downtime - not sure how much of this can be helped with the quantity of races we had (and plan to have in future marathons!) but here's hoping there's a better solution than WebCamMax.
* Relatedly, offsite races. I'm sorry guys Sad I agree with Vorpal actually, it was a failed experiment and it shouldn't be incorporated into future marathons. (In retrospect though, given my failure to record the source video, Lag's commentary is very helpful in working out how the race actually went!)

And just one point of interest:
* I'd like to hear from people who were there about how much of a toll a five-day marathon took on everyone. Even notwithstanding the fact that it ran so far over, people generally seemed pretty blitzed by the end of the thing, or at least that's the impression I gathered both from watching and from talking to people after the fact. Maybe it should be limited to four days in any case, just for sanity's sake?
Fucking Weeaboo
Maybe what can be done instead is that if we're incorporating a "setup hour" maybe look to see what it's gonna be in that chunk and have just the consoles needed ready?  Cause let's say a PS3 isn't needed for all of 30 hours, but we're gonna need 4 N64s, then we might as well set the PS3 aside for a day and make room for those N64s.  We don't ned to hide it in a closet, but maybe have a table of consoles off to the side or something?

I honestly don't remember.  I know I had a discussion with tri-hex nearing the end of the marathon, during which we said that we would definitely not want another 100 hour marathon next year.  Looking back at it now, I would still very much love to attend a 100 hour marathon.  Haha.  It totally ruined everybody's sleep schedules for awhile, and most of the time none of us had any idea what day/time it was....at all.  I think, assuming we stick to the 4-5 people rooms next year, it would be a lot more manageable for a lot of us, but I'm really just speaking for myself.

While typing the word "time" I remembered another suggestion brought up I think by UraniumAnchor during the synching process.  We should try to have a clock of some sort on the commentary cam during this so we know what times the runs began/ended.  It's easy enough to hang on a wall and saves some trouble afterwards, so why not?

Hell no, make it longer next year. Seriously, i had the time of my life.
Fucking Weeaboo
I didn't have a problem doing a 100 hour marathon.  I'd almost hate for it to be shorter.  I think it was the right amount of length - plenty of time to show off, but not too long as to cause those that have to work full time to have to take too much time off.  Was I tired by the end of it?  Yes.  We all were.  But was it worth it?  Absolutely!

What about if someone familiar with the DC area compiled a menu listing for restaurants that deliver to the 4H Center (now that we know the Center's food policy isn't as restrictive as we previously thought) and/or a map of nearby places people can drive to for food?

One suggsetion for the prices:

After a game is finished we know how will get the price, do we have the address already?
If yes we can have a small packing station there so the prices get pact up AT THE MARATHON by different people and not by a ill Mike all alone Tongue
If also there is some clearyfing necessary we can easily do that because everyone is still there and memorizes are fresh.

Setup: Mabey having a pre setu table were the stuff for the next run shoude be (with a sceadual on it) if the stuff isent there someone can check if the runner is still sleeping :-)

EDIT: also a Idee from my dad : IF we have at the next Marathon also this free wall behind us we can ask some game companies for donations an stick ther banner on that wall don't know how realistik this is but if not we can atleast make a banner from the chearaty (PCF) on that wall or a SDA Banner
Talk to the Hand
Both of Trekhaak's suggestions are top-notch and should be implemented. Wink

More seriously, I know that we really don't want to go too much longer than we did this year (Actual elapsed time, not scheduled time). But i can't imagine it being any shorter now, especially if we divorce it from MAGFest entirely.

RE: Scheduling: I was talking with Mike about this, and what we realized is that, taking various, uh, variables into account (The longer schedule, only cutting one game as opposed to a bunch of games last year), we actually didn't do THAT much worse this year than last year as far as schedule drift goes. This isn't to say that we did a GOOD job, or that we shouldn't try to improve it, but this isn't actually a problem new to this year (And I agree that going over somewhat isn't a big deal, but twelve hours plus over schedule is kind of a problem, yes). The thing is, with that many games, even going over five minutes per game is about 8 and a half hours of drift (Which "setup time" will help with).

RE: Quiet runners: Something I suggested somewhere was that, if some of the more quiet and/or shy runners wanted to, they could have some of the louder people (Me, Rane, etc) essentially act as their commentating "proxy", where they would explain in advance some of the tricks and important stuff that they think people would want to know, and the proxy would say all the stuff for them. Don't know how well it'll work in practice, but I figure it might help the more shy people if nothing else.

Should probably yell at me too since I originally made the thread and stopped updating after a while.

I kinda got an idea for a donations but it's not really good.  For games that have a 2 player co-op function but are being run by 1 person(Battletoads, Turtles in Time, Metal Slug 3, just to name a few), allow people to donate for the game to be a co-op run. The runner can decide who at the marathon can be the 2nd player or allow the viewers to donate for anyone at the marathon to be the 2nd  player. Of course, the runner can also deny the 2nd player option if they'd prefer. I kinda got the idea from Stanski's Sonic 2 run where MercuryZelda played cause of the viewers. The main downside to this is adding extra time for possible screw ups due to a 2nd player, but it could also provide more entertainment for the viewers, and of course, more money for the charity.

Then again if we do Co-Op Games Done Quick next year we won't have to worry about that. Tongue

Oh and for challenges and things to bid on, we should have have a page with a list of the possible things to donate for for each game. This will include stuff like character/file naming, watching a cutscene, random extra crap. This would help with the chat constantly asking on what the total was for something.

If I think of something else I'll be sure to post it.
Haters gonna hate
Next marathon also needs a coffee maker, knowing the state of the food policy I'm so bringing one next year.

And as for people looking blitzed towards the end, while the rooming situation is to blame a bit, that's also on the people themselves.  Seriously, unless you've got a game you're playing to stay up for, don't be afraid to get some sleep (and I'm not talking sleep cam or on the floor in the practice room, beds are a good thing).  A lot of people came in with the idea they were going to iron man this thing and not sleep at all.  If you want to do this, I won't tell you not to, but it will make you generally less effective as a commentator and/or a player.  mike89 basically just confirmed it:  we're better when we're fresh.  Sleeping schedules will be invariably screwed up, I know mine was pretty screwed even before I realized I had to play DMC at about 6 AM, but overall marathon quality will be better if this is because you're still getting an adequate amount of sleep, just at irregular times.  If there was one thing I learned this year it's that the show will go on just fine without you, taking ~8 hours out here and there isn't a bad thing at all.
Just had a thought: Mike's already kinda addressed this but anything he's not strictly needed for should not be his responsibility. Perhaps a list of such things would help. However, things that do not need Mike's approval include starting a game. :-P I don't mean this to say we should bypass his authority, but he's trying to enjoy the marathon like everyone else.
spread the dirt to the populace
Good thread here!

I could be remembering wrong, but by Monday the audience seemed really tapped out as far as donations went (well, until the Square stuff brought out Poxnor).  This might be because Monday didn't have many major games before the finale, but why would we have a weaker lineup on our last day in the first place?

What I'm getting at is that Sunday seems to be a more logical final day and I've almost never seen a big event stretch into the first day of the week like that.  You don't have to worry about lots of people being at work or anything, so you can really stack the lineup to finish and get more donations.

If I was wrong and Monday didn't do worse than other days, then I'll happily retract this.  Still curious about ending on a weekday though!

Thats a good thought josh I think a part of the reason was the scatual overrunning.

Also we had a day were a gap from 1000 viewers betwenn the commentator and game stream I think thas because the stream was linked somewere so I geuss that those 1000 people didn't visit the SDA front page and so had no chance to donate.
It might be a good idear to let from time to time on the butem on the game stream some text appear what that thing is ( AGDQ for PCF donate at SDA )

Also speaking of the stream is it possible to not shut down the stream to set up the races ? I thinking of setting up a picture on the stream for the set up time so like : "race is setting up please wait" so there is no one how will miss myst Cheesy

multiple PS3s

I meant to post this in the last thread, but I forgot about it until now.  I remember at some point you all tried to hook up two PS3s and you ended up with a loud buzzing noise.  It might have been RE5.  I think you formed a ground loop with those two PS3s, which is the same thing I managed to do when I had my PS3.  You can look at the information on that here:

http://community.us.playstation.com/message/2398587

In short form, a ground loop happens when you have two or more paths to ground.  Then when you plug the A/V cables into the TV, you get that buzzing sound, and sometimes bars rolling on your screen.  The solution is to either shunt the connection of one of the PS3s to another circuit using an extension cord or to somehow remove one of the ground prongs from the equation (break it off, use a conversion cable, etc).  Hopefully that can help.

Private staff chat channel - a bunch of people

Actually, we had one.
We just need to make sure everyone is actually using it too.

Prizes

We need to link to images of the prizes from the schedule page. Basically the same way we had this year with the prize column, only that the names as text are switched out for links.

Stream manners

If you need to fix something that's on the floor while having your back turned to the web cam, bend your legs instead of bending over. This will help in keeping the stream PG13.
