Portable Marathon #1 will take place on the 30th of May

The kick-off will be between 1PM/2PM EDT, registration on the IRC channel will be opened a bit earlier.

A complete set of roms can be downloaded here: http://tinyurl.com/ptgp8gn

It is recommended to use Bizhawk or BGB as emulator, VBA is BANNED because it runs games too fast.

All games must be played through completely (any%) unless stated otherwise.

1. Kirby’s Dream Land
2. Bubble Ghost
3. Solar Striker (beat stage 4)
4. Operation C (10 extra lives code allowed*, stage select code is not allowed)
5. Super Mario Land
6. Metroid II (Kill 5 Metroids aka clear Phase 2)
7. Mega Man II
8. Ninja Gaiden Shadow
9. Kid Dracula
10. Zelda Link’s Awakening (beat Dungeon 2 and pick up instrument)**

*Code for 10 extra lives: Up(x4), Down(x4), Left(x4), Right(x4), B, A, and Start

**Here's a small tutorial vid for the marathon specifics:

Some extra info about the games for people who want to acquire the roms on their own or want to play on SGB2 or GB Player:

- All games are the American version except for Mega Man II and Kid Dracula.
- Mega Man II uses the European version because it gets rid of a block in Top Man's stage which grants easier passage through the room.
- Kid Dracula uses the Japanese version because bosses' health gets cut down and makes some areas easier in general.
- You can use Probotector instead of Operation C if you really want to. All it does is changes the sprites.
- Be aware of a faulty/hacked rom of Solar Striker that gives you 99 lives at the start. This is of course not allowed.
- Link's Awakening is v.1.0 to make sure all tricks/glitches work properly to reach the set goal of the marathon.

General information:

- For blind runners who want a general time estimate: it is very possible to clear the list under 4 hours without knowing any strats. We have tested everything thoroughly before defining the list and made sure to set good goals for longer or more difficult games.

- With strats, a majority of the games end up being around 15 minutes each except for Kid Dracula/Mega Man II which are a bit longer and Solar Striker/Bubble Ghost which are a bit shorter.

- If people really want it, I can make general tutorial videos for every game to get you started, but you can probably learn more from watching actual good runs which I shall add to the thread.

- If there are any problems whatsoever, feel free to comment in this thread.

Speed run videos and/or guides:

- Kirby's Dream Land: A lot of different play styles/strats so check out a few if needed.

- Bubble Ghost: WR by Joka

- Solar Striker: No strats, just git gud!

- Operation C: WR by MR K. For people who have difficulty using the Fire weapon, try out the Homing Shot for a safer albeit slower strat!

- Super Mario Land: WR by TheTycon. Very technical, you can play it a lot safer and still get a decent time.

- Metroid II: WR by Behemoth. You can skip getting the extra missiles for the marathon goal. CAREFUL FOR THE VOLUME OF THE VID!

- Mega Man II: WR by Tremane. No worries if you can't replicate some of the tricks fast enough, Tremane is just crazy!

http://www.twitch.tv/tremane/c/4301732

- Ninja Gaiden Shadow: WR by Nikke1989

- Kid Dracula: WR by StarvinStruthers. Better learn your Japanese to remember which power is which.

- Link's Awakening: Tutorial by Leon P. Although this is for the DX version, Leon P goes over everything you need to know for the normal version as well!

made my day, haha.

it´s a shame that i have exams before this event, so i cant prac. the games and probably can´t participate too..
Time to put the title of Gameboy Gladiator to the test.
I'm totally going to join this, it'll be great.
So is this a race or what? 'Marathon' makes me think of you know, a succession of games being streamed by one person each (maybe with 2-4 person races in there as well).
This is more like the Best of Nes marathon races.

Also if this was a marathon I could probably offer at least 10 games.

Would love to join this, but don't have the time to prep the games I don't know. Best of luck to everyone
- Does this mean we can't use the US carts for those two games?  Given that they're only harder I wouldn't see why not...
- What glitches are allowed/banned for Zelda?  My casual playing of that games wants to know if I can use the select button screen skipping to get to the Tail Key without magic powder.  Also, not that I know of a way to do it, but given there's a map exploration sort of way to get the Eagle's Tower instrument, is the goal to collect the instrument at the end of dungeon two, or is the goal to defeat the bosses of BOTH dungeons 1 and 2 and collect the instruments?
gameboy. will do this

- This is indeed like the Best of NES marathon where it's just a race that everyone who wants can join.

- If you want, you can use the US or the JP version of MM II. It just adds that block, which may result in it being 1 sec slower. I just took the EU version so there can be no complaints that I didn't suggest the fastest version of the game.

- I really don't recommend using the US version of Kid Dracula... It would put people at a (dis)advantage if there is a mix up of versions.

- About Link's Awakening: First of all it's the US version because I know some people want to enter blind, so not being able to understand Japanese would just make them run around like a headless cucoo until the next marathon. Save & Quit is not allowed for the marathon. You can use the save screen to skip text messages from treasure chests and bosses though. I shall record a video and update the thread later today so it will be clear for everybody! The goal is to beat  both bosses and get the instruments.

whoa this looks super fun

Just to answer my own question, I hear Select screen Wrapping is banned in most major categories, so I would assume no using it to do things like Quick Tail Key without the damage boost.

Yeah, it will be required to do the Goblin damage boost / skip / whatever it's called in the community.

Just wanted to say I really don't know how much of a disadvantage Kid Dracula in English would give people, based solely on text. There is a lot of Japanese text in the game including your power ups through the whole game and if you don't plan on running the game it shouldn't make to much of a difference. I had a 21:30 on the US version so if you are familiar with the game it shouldn't mess you up too bad.
Pew Pew Pew
The text won't matter as you can skip it, but the bosses health differences increase the difficulty in English versions.

I'm talking strictly in between stages when selecting or skipping the bonus games. It can be quite a mess to get out of if you are new to the game

btw the 10 lives code is A then B(just tested because i couldnt get it to work)

also J LADX isnt allowed? i have no interest in talking to those kids in english, take soooooo long
also im not sure why you would recommend J kid dracula and not J LADX since its basically the fastest version.
The reasoning behind English being chosen is so people can be guided if they go in blind.
but then selecting the J version for kid dracula is going to confuse them since the power ups are written in japanese and there is no way to actually know which one you have selected...
I personally don't agree with forcing versions but that is probably because my background is me used to playing inferior versions and losing time over others.

im just saying, if you allow/force a game to be played on a certain version because its faster, do it for EVERY games.
It would only make sense to allow people to select the version they want to use.

- I knew Kid Dracula was going to be a problem from the start but people voted it in the list so here we go: If the only difference between English and JP version would be the text, I would take the English one for the blind racers. But as the bosses health is (almost) twice as big, I picked the JP version for an easier time, not mainly because it's faster. Yes, not being able to tell which power up is which is a problem, but I ran it twice on the JP version and I already knew which was which and skipping the bonus game is kinda obvious to figure out as well...

- When it comes to Link's Awakening, pressing the B button during text messages skips a lot of them (just watch the tutorial video I just uploaded for it), including the one with the two kids when BowWow gets taken away, so this should not be an issue at all.

- I have to "force" people to play the same version of a game unless it makes no difference at all like with Operation C / Probotector or when the difference is amost not noticable like with Mega Man II. I don't want complaints afterwards that this guy/girl won because they used version x over y and that it wasn't fair.

- About the code for Operation C: It is B then A, at least on the rom version provided in the set and on my copy of Probotector...
if people go in fully blind, it might be a problem, other than that i understand why you picked J over english, but i still dont understand why you took english over J for ladx since its basically the same(text in J) except that all the items have a picture so you know what you're using.

That's simple: the NPC's in Link's Awakening give hints towards where you need to go or what you need to search for in order to make progress. People going in blind without knowledge of the Japanese language will not understand what to do.

When it comes to Kid Dracula, the text in the game is of no concern besides the power ups in the hubs, but if you just play it, you figure out which is which fairly fast. And I'm pretty sure everybody playing is more then intelligent enough to figure out that the shortest line of Japanese text skips the minigame, if not after one time, certainly after the second time they enter that little menu.

This is the last time I'm gonna (try to) explain the choices of the versions. I didn't make this list in 5 secs but did my research (with other people) before deciding everything. It is impossible to keep everybody happy with the choices but this is the way it is going to be I'm afraid.

Quick reminder that VBA is a bad emulator, is banned for this race and should be banned generally for all GB/GBC speedruns. Just saying it here because there are still a lot of people which are using VBA. Smiley
