This is one of my favorite games to speed run, but I will never go for the SDA, simply because I use the outdated Zapdos strategy and I'm sticking to it  Tongue

I've never done a segmented run, or any run with the major skip glitches, but my SS time with the Zapdos is 2:43, as compared to the SDA time by Jacob91 of 2:39. So I'm close... I'd have to get really lucky to beat his time with Zapdos. What kind of times does anyone else have?
Thread title:
Back in the game!
I've got a test SS time of 2:42 using Squirtle up until the Safari Zone, then using Nidoqueen for the remainder of the run.  I'd guess I lost about 20 minutes or so trying to acquire a Nidorino for the trade though!
Catchin' them all
2:22 would be a nice time for SS I think.

But yeah, once I learn how the trick works, I'll try SS zzazz one day. =)
There's a word for that
I don't actually own either of these, only Yellow -_- I might casual-run it next time I go on holidays though. See how well I do going in blind Cheesy
The best I've ever gotten on blue's 8+ hours using charmander only
:[

I've actually never used squirtle, I should try it out sometime
edit: Oh wait I forgot I wasn't speedrunning it when I got that 8+ hours D:
Wow UltimateDarius, Nidoqueen saves that much time? That might be worth trying if I go back to this. But 20 minutes? If I remember right you're using Blue, and it's a 5% encounter in rooms 1 and 3. If you were looking in 2 or 4 it's 0%, that may account for missing time. Either that or you were just really unlucky.
Wow, I'm up to 2:27 and I haven't even got the soul badge yet.

I think my main problem is going out of my way to grab vitamins and useful TMs in order to always have super effective moves for every single gym instead of just going straight through. It doesn't help that I've never done a speedrun before either.

Yeah, when just starting to speed run it's hard to break the habits of normal game playing. If you haven't done so, watch the current run to get some tips.

Right.  The catch rate is what got me.  Just that and unluck.  But Nidoqueen is a beast who rapes everything.  You have the preset, godly DVs (11 HP, Max attack, 10 defense, 13 special, and average speed). You have the pwnage of STAB quake over many many things.  You have a variety in moveset.  You have the advantage of x accuracied horn drill and fissure both.  There is nearly nothing but the E4 that needs x items to KO.  It's great!
If you save before entering the grass, catching the pokemon delays you what? maybe 30 seconds?

This is true, it would not be a problem in a segmented run, doing it in a SS run is the difficulty.

Max attack? That is pretty crazy. I've never got into Pokemon speed runs enough that I've worked with X-items, but that does seem like it would work incredibly well.

I'm Jacob91's cousin, the one who watched and gave him tips. I have actually tied his 2:39, using the same strategy.

With the same strategy as mine or the same strategy as his?
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
in pokemon each segment costs 6 seconds at most unassisted, unless you are not that good mashing, in that case lets say 8 seconds. So saving before doing x or y doesn't waste that much time.
Same strategy as his.
Oh okay. I'm curious though as to what kind of time UltimateDarius's strategy would net.
Back in the game!
Optimium strategy:

Same (basically) as the current run, with early bubblebeam implemented.  Bide also used against Lavender Rival's Gyarados.  Nidorino caught in Safari Zone (the big SS fuckup point, sadly!), traded for Nidoqueen after beating Erika (obedience issues).  Erika strat: X accuracy Horn Drill sweep.

After trade, you'd take out Silph Co. to gain access to Quake.  The rest of the game are either SE OHKOs or x-accuracied Horn Drills/Fissures, with the exception of Muk and Weezing.

The other useable timesaver is item-stuffing:  if the bag is full, gym leaders will not give you their TM and will not rave about how fucking awesome it is, they'll just tell you that you don't have room for it.
Mass Effect 2 can go suck balls.

Depending on the pokemon the Tms may be right there, Squirtles Ideal final loadout for me at least is Ice Beam/Blizzard, Dig, Strength, and Surf

3 of the four you get automatically anyway and blizzard isnt too far off in pokemon mansion. I usually stick with ice beam because it cuts down on ether and elixer use and I go into the department store to get a poke doll for the tower anyways.
It would also depend if you're doing segmented or SS. I wouldn't take Blizzard in an SS, too risky.
Do you think it would be practical to do the Lvl 1-100 Mew Glitch? I mean, a lvl 100 Mew would literally tear up everything 1-hit.
There's a word for that
You know I'm not even sure Mew is the fastest choice, provided something with a shorter cry could be used just as well. NOT Snorlax obviously Tongue Clefable perhaps? Or maybe Gengar.
With an escape rope, you can actually perform the glitch in Viridian Forest, and if you get a Nidoran of either gender, and then use the 1-100 glitch, you can have a Lvl 100 before Brock.

Just note that this only works in yellow version.

The next, obvious question:  Where do you get an escape rope prior to Brock?
Catchin' them all
In Pewter City?

Come on, guys, this idea is old. >_>

This video of mine is two years old in fact.

I've done a SS lvl 100 Nidoking run before (clocked in at 1:52 I think), but I don't think it can get much lower then that using the same route (less random encounters would help a ton).

Also, for the level 100 glitch, it ONLY works for:

Bulbasaur, Ivysaur, Venusaur, Charmander, Charmeleon, Charizard, Squirtle, Wartortle, Blastoise, Pidgey, Pidgeotto, Pidgeot, Nidoran-M, Nidorino, Nidoking, Nidoran-F, Nidorina, Nidoqueen, Gastly, Haunter, Gengar, Geodude, Graveler, Golem, Abra, Kadabra, Alakazam, Machop, Machoke, Machamp, Poliwag, Poliwhirl, Poliwrath, Oddish, Gloom, Vileplume, Bellsprout, Weepinbell, Victreebel, Mew.

Basically, every Pokémon out there that evolves twice (but strangely, not the bugs). Plus Mew. All based of their Exp formulae (spelling?), which is Medium Slow.

While DoubleThink is right about the whole cry thing, managing the WtW glitch with a Pokémon that cannot be Poisoned, really sucks and would probably take more time. Also, Gengar only gets Mega Drain, Thunderbolt and Psychic. Both Lick and Night Shade start to become useless after a while (Pokés start to survive it around level 33~ I think).
