Well, maybe one person doesn't have to bring everything, although it would be good if someone who's driving could bring the "big stuff" (chassis and monitor). And people who need the PC for their games can contribute with other components. I'm going by plane so I'm kinda space limited but what I could bring includes graphics card, sound card (onboard sound sucks, ok), optical drive and HDD. Maybe I can fit a PSU in one of my bags. If we end up with a DDR3 system I can bring RAM as well.
My CPU is a nono because the watercooling is a bitch to remove, and an even worse bitch to install again.
So it turns out my dad has family friends who just so happened to have moved to Chevy Chase recently, and my dad wants an excuse to visit them. Sign me up for the marathon (under theenglishman)!
Resident Evil 4, Normal Gamecube Newgame+. My projected time is 1:50 (might reach 2 hours depending on how many run-slowing donation requests I receive). I'll accept donations for costumes (Normal versus Special 1) before the run, and donations for some of the crazier tricks during the run.

Edit: Realized my PSU isn't 120V compatible
Honestly, I'd rather pay the shipping to bring my own desktop than trust that kind of a Frakensystem. I'm not saying its impossible to set up a decent gaming PC from parts in under a day, but a) someone needs to spend the day doing it (not to mention install all of the necessary games) b) there needs to be quite a bit of co-ordination to ensure everything works nicely together c) Any unforeseen issues with any given game would leave that runner high and dry (and remember, we can't easily stop the marathon to wait for a driver re-install or something).
Its a neat idea in theory, but in practice it sounds like a disaster waiting to happen given the limited time we have to set it up. I think that our best bet is to find someone with a reliable desktop with all or most of the necessary games, make sure that one machine is groomed and ready to go (i.e. the owner might need to play through all of the games, or at least those games with known issues (e.g. Psychonauts has a few trouble spots that I know of, most notably Waterloo World)), and spare whatever expense necessary to have it all get there and back safely.
a) someone needs to spend the day doing it (not to mention install all of the necessary games)
Well, I'm a long-time hardware geek and can easily assemble the system in under 2 hours, provided all necessary parts are actually there. And the only issues we might run into is easily avoided, i.e making sure we follow the hardware standards with pci-e, RAM and the CPU socket.

You can install windows with all necessary drivers in under 2 hours? You, my friend, are a god.

Seconded. I can build pretty quickly too,, if I have all the parts handy. Building a PC is 98% research so you get parts that are all compatible with each other. The other 2% is building it right, like properly putting thermal paste on the CPU and connecting cords in the right place.
Laptop building though is a nightmare, mainly cause it's so condensed. I've never fully assembled one of those from scratch, but I've torn apart and put in various components.
It's not hard to have a PC build, with all software installed if everything is there and have it all going in a few hours. It's a matter of cost, really.
Assembling the system takes under 2 hours, installing Windows should take barely an hour, unless we set up an unattended image with all updates on the disc, then we're down to maybe 20 minutes for that.
Kibbo, your time estimate is a really naive assumption that assumes nothing goes wrong. If you really need a desktop, then we'll have someone bring theirs for the marathon.
qubit: You deserve an award for your inability to pay attention.
Mike, if I have all the parts I need it takes me about 2 hours to assemble a PC (I've built plenty of systems in my day, so I know my average times for this), the issue is of course getting the parts there. But if someone is able and willing to bring their entire system, then by all means do it.
I vote for frankenpc. It should be streamed when its being built (or maybe not, will put too much pressure on the builder which will make him/her drop a screw into a bad place).
Another thing i wanna point out is (i dont know if this is already mentioned), there should be 2 TV's for the runners, one CRT and one HDTV. This way, runners that are used to HDTV lag shouldnt have a problem (ofc the HDTV needs to have the same lag as their own tv at home, but thats another thing)
I'm sure it probably has been given already, but I don't want to wade through all the posts in this thread, but is there an estimate of costs involved with the 4H center?
IMO it would be better to work with a pre tested system as with one with no test at all for such a important thing (no offense to Kibbo just want to be on the safe side)
The cost will be higher this year, because I'm hard capping each room at 5 people. If you need an estimate for a week's stay (without food) I'd say 250-280 dollars.

I can;t afford the whole week stay, but i can definitley go for 3-4 days!
I've been thinking that I can go this year (which will be the first time I'm doing this, So I'm not sure what I have to do/pay). But, I want to support my YI pals

Don't worry! It's my first time also doing this, and Uyama will be releasing information about how it all works. You can also refer to last year's thread!
