Viewers Perspective: wasn't there a donation run to get one guy's mouth duct-taped at AGDQ1? Seems like the problem solved itself there (or more directly, the donors did lol).

As a side note/question: assuming that all goes well and I'm able to attend, it'll be my first time taking a long trip on my own without parents/anyone else. So I'm wondering ahead of time, based on AGDQ1 - do the runners get their own hotel rooms, or is everything chipped in on, and how does paying for our own meals/other stuff run? If I'll be paying for my own stuff (hotels, meals, etc), what would be a good suggestion of how much cash to have put aside overall (not counting plane tickets - I'm hoping to be able to drive sufficiently by then, but I'm beginning to hear some nasty horror stories about the drive over the Adirondacks in Pennsylvania when coming south from NY (south coast of Lake Ontario), so we'll see how that goes and I'll tackle it when I get to it).
Fucking Weeaboo
We didn't have a "hotel room" per say, but we all stayed at the 4H facility.  The rooms are kind of a cross between a dorm room and a hotel room.  We paid a fee to Mike, but didn't have a room to ourselves (unless we paid more), but typically shared with 3 other people (unless you were in one particular room mentioned earlier).

Food we were entirely on our own for, but there were several places fairly close by, including BK, Subway, and McDonalds.  We also have some menus for places that delivered.

As for how much cash to put aside?  Well, it depends on how you eat, and if you're gonna fly or drive.  If you do fly, check out Southwest, which the flights were cheaper then everybody else PLUS 2 free checked bags.  I can't really give a good amount, since I spent a lot more then other people, mainly cause I got a rental (which was several hundred dollars right there).  If you fly, get a shared room, and get a decent meal at regular times, it'll probably take at least $650. (About $250-300 for the flight, $250 for the room, and about $100 for food for the week.  Remember, eating out is spendy!)  But this is just rough thinking in my head.  Your amount may vary.

Or do what I did and go with Jetblue Tongue I paid much less than what Sir VG offered, and got a direct flight.

If JetBlue flies from your airport, of course.  They don't fly from MSP.  I'd have to drive all the way to Chicago, which would tack on another 3 hrs of drive time for me.  Assuming I don't get stuck in Chicago traffic, which I know it sucks from experience.  With me going to MSP, I'm much less likely to.

And doing a random search for dates for me w/ JetBlue, I STILL wouldn't get a direct flight.  I'd be going to either NYC or Boston first.

Moral of the story: Compare compare compare.

Nope. Not even the mighty duct tape can tame JMan's puns.

This is only because no one there knows how to properly duct tape someone's mouth shut. Wink

It should be a requirememnt for somebody to bring 1 roll of ducktape to the marathon for emergency puns like those.thumbsup

I think donations would go through the roof if anyone was duct taped for any reason.

I have some in my truck at all times (along with some other potentially fun tools). Not necessarily for that reason, but if need be, I can provide a roll.
Stuck in game Limbo...
I've been a regular watcher and downloader of SDA for quite a long time now; just had to recently change to a new name since my Email account tied to the old one was hacked (ouch lol), but I would love to attend and meet you all. Watching the stream and DLs of the marathons had me entertained for hours on end. I don't really have much talent myself for speedrunning, however when not playing random new games that come out or revisiting old classics, the 3 games I spend the most time with are Super Mario Kart, Mario Kart Wii, and Smash Bros. Brawl in the Subspace Emissary mode, which since the marathon wouldn't be for another 6 months I could hone myself onto those and possibly join some of the Marathon vets for some action.

Yup. Use sites like Orbitz, Travelocity, etc to help compare your flights to help you get the cheapest one and more convenient options.

Just know that Southwest isn't represented on the big travel sites.  You have to go to their page. ^^;

Define "big city". If I did fly, I'd be flying out of the Rochester International Airport.

Edit 2: I'd posted a picture of the airport, but apparently the Monroe website doesn't like picture linking ._.

$650?! o_o Ouch...not the cash drop I had in mind by far.

Is there a Taco Bell/Wendys near the 4-H Center? I'm no stranger to eating cheap with mixed dollar menus, but those places are my preference if I have to choose. As for the room idea, I have no complaints about bunking with others, so long as everyone is well behaved (bad memories of a seventh grade Washington D.C. trip with four boys to a room and only two big queen sized beds and no supervision - one can imagine how tumultuous the battles for who got the beds and who got the floors would be).

As far as baggage goes though, I doubt I'd need two bags. It's not like I'll need to pack tons of heavy duty stuff, since most of my time would be spent at the marathon - I could probably just stuff clothes and personal hygiene stuff, along with my Wii (Pokemon Snap VC), controller, PS1 disk (Megaman Legends 1), and 3DS into a backpack and be all set.

Actually, there's another side note - what sort of amenities does the 4-H center have? Kitchen center, showers, etc.

Edit: Looking at RhydiaRob's post, I had a vague though - we have a lot of race runs in marathons, but how often does co-op happen? I'm pretty versed in SSBB's Subspace mode, and perhaps if I practiced, he and I could co-op a speedrun of Subspace Emissary for the marathon (assuming it's within a reasonable time - I have no idea what the current time records are for it).

NXRunner, the Rochester International Airport is <5 miles from my home and I am driving to the marathon.  You can probably ride with me.

The rooms we have have full bathrooms in there (with showers).  Unfortunately, there's no kitchen center, since there's a buffet style cafe in the building we were in (but it's pricey).  There's several fast food places nearby and we had some info sheets of places that delivered.
Someone said something about a banner in the background, I don't remember who sorry, that if we couldn't get a sponsor then we could possibly have an SDA banner in the background. I had a thought that if this banner had all of the runners in the marathon with what they were running, and then had everyone sign it then that would be a pretty badass prize to give out at the end. I would put in money to win that.
Haters gonna hate
That reminds me. I was talking to my cousin and I guess he is into making custom T-Shirt logos and steam pressing them. I looked at some shirts he made and they look really nice. I could talk to him about possibly making some shirts for the marathon and giving some away as prizes.

Is Mercury Zelda going to be able to provide snuggleable prizes again? According to her blog, she's in England right now, but I'm unsure of her future plans.

Also, if you wanted any "retro games" as prizes, I could most likely find ways to get ahold of those - the local chain of stores here, Game Craze (who are currently whooping the hell out of GameStop's ass in the area, to the point of taking over their mall locations), carry everything gaming all the way back to the pre-Atari 2600 stuff, NES, SNES, and so on up to modern stuff at good prices.
