Participating in the marathon?

Hey all, I've been a long time admirer of SDA runs, I would often come to the site if I wanted to see a game I really liked stomped in record time, but only very recently have I really taken an interest in joining the community. I watched as much as I possibly could of the most recent Awesome Games Done Quick marathon you guys hosted and I loved every minute of it. Anything I couldn't catch on stream I downloaded and from watching it live to catching up afterwards, its been one heck of an experience. Its definitely something I've taken a shine to, and I would love nothing more than to participate in a future marathon. I'm not entirely sure of how people are chosen to participate but I just think something like playing video games to raise money for cancer is amazing, and I would absolutely love to have the chance to participate in something like this at a future marathon. However, as someone who is relatively new to the community I'm not sure how realistic this hope is. Given a year I could probably get some game speed run good enough to perform live but I'm just curious as to what kind of reputation or skill level is acceptable to be able to participate in something like the marathon. I'd be happy to be there doing anything (like food runs or something for instance) but nothing would feel more rewarding than doing an actual run. Just want to hear anyones stories and if its possible if I work at it to be eligible to participate in the future seeing as how I've got pretty much no current reputation when it comes to speed running. You guys have an outstanding community here and I'd just love to be more active in it.

Here is a good first place to start, with this post.

As to be able to attend an event, I am no admin but I think I could answer this a bit. Just be a part of the community and don't be/act... stupid. General common courtesy and, given you can, be helpful with something you are knowledgeable about. If you know a game rather well, read the forum page (given there is one for that game, and I mean all of the pages) and see if there is any insight you can offer that has not been brought up. This will generally get you a good reputation with the community.

But even w/o doing that, I don't see why you would not be able to attend any of our events so long as you abide by the rules, can afford it, and are able to make it to the event. That is really all there is to it. But, like our summer marathon that is in the works, if there is a space issue of any kind then runners will have priority. If you attend one of the events, like you said, you don't have to run a game at all. Just have to have the passion for it and are willing to go the extra mile for the event.

If any of this is wrong, I am sure some one will correct me...

EDIT: This is assuming he wants to come and run. I don't know what restrictions there are, if any, if you want to spectate/gopher for the group, aside from availability/cash.

Only real note is that our first marathon wasn't to support Cancer, but it was still for charity (C.A.R.E. was the group we donated our money to.)

As far as I know, If you can show that you can run, they'll let you in the door, for the most part. You don't have to be the best (See: Mike89 running S2K at CGDQ in Stanski's absence), you just have to know the game. No one really expects people to turn out SDA-best runs live in front of tons of people, live... doing well is usually pressure enough in itself.

You don't need a reputation, just be a good guy and do your best to know your game. They were going to let me in, and while I've been around awhile, I wasn't active until recently. Even with that, only a handful of people here know me as a speedrunner at all (TSC (The Sonic Center) is where they know me as a speedrunner, and both groups mingle)... most know me as "that dude who made the wicked perlers", but hey, it beats being "hey you with the face" >_>

SDA's an awesome community, and you wanting to be a productive part of that community, lo', a part of that community at all, means that you're welcomed here.

(Personally speaking, I'd say that if you want in, the best way to invite confidence is to work on/stream runs, know whatever game you're going to run inside and out, and keep up the helping attitude!)

Thinking about this I'd say that the game should have an established speed run route and that you can prove that you're reasonably proficient enough at it. If I were you I'd record a video of you speedrunning your game.

In your game, you would have to use every sequence break, glitch and technique you can reasonably and consistently do. Make sure you've practiced your game as well.

The biggest one I've made was for a friend. It was his birthday, and he loves Gengar, so I made him Gengar's avatar sprite. It took like 5 pegboards.

Yeah, about the holes, you just have to find a certain pressure and length of ironing for different sizes.

I really like my MMX health bar up there.

I may make some pieces, and I'll always be available for commissions, but next time I'll be more aware of the drain larger pieces put on me. The Epoch was a huge drain, both in the time and effort put into it, and in the money it cost to make/ship it... Aside from the Epoch, I really enjoyed the work I did for the Marathon (Yay Dragon Tank!)

Before I answer this question, I would like to give kudos to Caleb Hart. Those are just awesome, and just by looking at those, I suddenly have an interest in trying something like that. Heck, would be nice to make a couple of those to use as prizes at a marathon. ^^ I'll look into it more later after I get some rest.

Alright, back to the topic. (pretty much going to repeat what everyone has said so far) Tenken, it goes without saying that for you to partake in speed running, you must first know how to speed run a game. In situations like marathons, it really doesn't matter if you aren't the best person at the game (as mentioned before, look at the SDA marathons, and you can see how some aren't as great as the featured runs on SDA), but as long as you understand and perform the runs with little to no problems, then you might be able to help out.

Just like anyone else here who first started (myself included), start off slow and work your way up. Start with games that you enjoy playing. After playing through the game a few times, then start figuring out how to improve on it (tricks, strategies, and the idea of having little to no errors) and in no time, you can see how you do, and if you like the level of gameplay you show, then you know you are on the right track. Other than that, if you want to help out with stuff like "Gifts" or whatever, then I would direct you to the person in charge of planning the marathon.

For example, with the summer marathon in the planning stages still, you can say "Well I can draw these awesome VG characters" or as what Caleb Hart did, donate a few of your works to be given away as prizes. Either way though, it is through contributing to the marathon in some way that you can help participate; I don't think that just being there helps, unless you are with a runner who is running a game (Essentia's Husband)

Yeah, I would love to go to the marathon, even if it is just me making perlers for prizes/fellow members. I would love to meet everybody. From the marathon videos, you guys seem like a cool crowd to chill with.
