13013 - The chapter 1 sucks thing is my irritable thing. They key glitching through Mario at the beggining of the segment is what I meant, not the video title.

qwerty - oh good, shame this is not new news, but for anyone attempting a low% hopefully the confirmation is helpful. Random question now, do you have to continuously avoid them? or do they only bother you for chapter 1-2 intermission?

Taija - thanks

Sorry, but I'm slightly distracted atm, segment 5 is pretty easy, but annoying as hell. I'm not to into this part mostly because of the whole 5 minutes of trying to do what I need then *poof* speedy spin isn't in the stupid shop. Out of my 8 (ya not many) attempts 5 are because of that, 1 is a fast run, but fall in 55 minutes rather then 54, 1 is the one I have where the spinning into the star piece is the worst flaw, and the last one is the whole stupid java thing that ruined a good run. I'm going to try 1-2 more times, but honestly the 54 minute one is really fast, and I think there were a few minor mistakes in menu optimization, but nothing stands out except the star piece thing, so I wouldn't regret making it the 5th segment, in a 15-16 minute segment some mistakes are probably expected, and the spin thing will probably happen... alot.
iirc You just have to avoid him the one time

I have a new idea to fix this, but its not much of a chance, sorry but not much I can do, the only surefire way to fix it is by not going through the vcr, which means I wouldn't have a tv, and the delay in the recording frame would make things difficult, it may not have delay in the actual recording, but the little screen lags like no other.

Just tacking this on, Segment 5 won't be up today, I got a cut that is 5 seconds faster, but unless I can cut another 35 seconds (ha...) the video is to long for youtube to let me put it on. I'll work out if I have any editing software on either of my computers *doubtful unless they came with it* or if youtube offers any. Sorry for the delay, worst case scenario I could try to attach the file on here, but it is huge for one, and the file extention is .vob not sure how rare that is to anyone else, but I've never heard of it before. Although (suprisingly) window's media player seems to recognize it, and of course VLC does at that... On the plus side I (THINK) I may have fixed the sound issue, if I ever get this thing uploaded someone could tell me.

Would now be the time to tell you that, apparently, you've not heard of the mass removal of the time limit on YT, including non-partner or old director channels? From what I've read if you have no strikes on your channel you'll eventually (YT screens channels constantly from what I've heard, so it's like being fished out of the ocean) get a message that you're channel's time limit was forfeited above the "Upload video" button. This happened to my channel already and a few others I watch as well. For reference: the longest video I've seen was a few minutes short of 3 hours, though supposedly the time limit is gone completely, and the only limit that remains is the size of the video file; 20 GB

I assure you, I have heard of the time limit, but I knew people back when it was 10 minutes doing 11-15 minute videos. I did not know that they gave you an extention depending how good you are. I figured if they gave a minute leeway during 10 minute videos, a 30 second or so leeway wouldn't hurt in a 15 minute video, sadly I seem to be wrong.

Right now I'm trying to get a converter to make it compatable with windows movie maker (seriously a .vob *which I found out is quite common for dvd recordings* is not supported by my version of movie maker) but I cant convert more then 3 minutes of the video with a trial, and I'm certainly not going to buy a converter for one segment.

I've got a few options right now: 1. Try to find some way to cut it *path I'm trying* 2. Ignore it and say sorry. 3. Try to shave 30-35 seconds off it so that youtube will accept it *MAY be possible, but it would seriously require perfect menu timing, and I couldn't make so much as one minor mistake. or 4. See if attaching it here would be ok (its like 600 MB) and hopefully one of you split it up, at the very least anyone who wanted to could see it.

It'll be awhile before 6, I'm trying not to spend every millisecond doing this, because it is really easy to burn out and anyone keeping up should be aware when I hit chapter 3 everything will take forever anyway... (hidden panels come into play making everything annoying, the spike room in TB castle I need to get down better so I need to practice that, and TB himself is very annoying when your trying to get him to hit you right AND run away) so in a few segments everything will take forever for me to get right anyway.

Anyone got any ideas for this problem though? I'm sure most of you are better with recordings/video files then I am.

The "old" time limit is 15:29, as shown here. While you may not get a 30 second break you might just get a 29 second break. And if you have no strikes on your account, you'll get an eternal break eventually.

If nothing else works I might be able to do...something, as I have Camtasia, but I don't know it would work either (that, and DLing a 600MB file for me is a tall order)

Splitting is easy: just use mkvtoolnix.
Encoding ("converting") is easy: just use an easy GUI such as Handbrake or use x264 + mkvtoolnix yourself.
I could do this for you if you really don't understand how to; you just need to torrent the files or the like.

Hope you fixed your audio issue, too. Otherwise I can show you how easy it is to fix it on your computer.
Btw, do you have seg 4 raw? The YT is one channel only, and I cannot seem to download it, so I can't fix it! Dammit, I hate playing videons in anything else but my trusty media player.

Also, you sure you don't have the time limit removed? I know the time limit on my account was removed (or so it says, I haven't tested it yet).
I got a copy of windows live movie maker (something like that) that can do .vob the one that came with my XP oddly can not, go figure. So I have segment 5 in two parts and on youtube now! I think I fixed the audio, but I await all of you to tell me. Mystery if you want I can attatch segment 4 onto a post if you all dont think it'll mess anything up, sadly the recorder I have makes really large files (then again I'm pretty sure all raw footage is large untill compressed properly so I think its normal) and I'm not sure how much space an attachment could handle (or that anyone wants to put up with for the forums)

I'm not huge on editing (I'm more hardware/programming myself then a/v or editing, but I haven't had to much issue given the right tools, I'm just woefully ignorant) but I tried to do it in the middle without to much loss of video, I may have missed a frame or two, but it looks pretty proper.

Tell me if the audio is correct, I wont be 100% sure until segment 6 is passed because of the editing segment 5 required, for all I know if segment 5's turns out good it could just be because it had to go through (the small amount of) editing.

Part 1:

Part 2:
This is just a small bit but I think you might be able to spin a little farther before you jump because with speedy spin you don't just spin faster you spin farther iirc.
You do, and I generally try to keep them long, but I sacrifice a little speed for control unconsciously, its not a major hinderance in this segment (alot of openness followed by precision) but if you notice both my stair jump misses are because I jumped a little to early on a spin that could've gone a bit further. Don't worry when I get a bit further that will change, some of my side notes are on how many spins to certain points *to not spin into items/get blocks/get hidden blocks, ect*. This is the only segment where I put up with going from annoying short spins, to real spins, so the transition is clear, I didn't notice anything lost in terms of time, and to be honest I'm sure all of my spins are longer then those short things I've been using up till now. The downside of speedy spin is *Besides making the damn thing appear* if I make a minor mistake *like idk... falling off of two cliffs (looks at segment 2's image)* its much more severe, so cutting a few spins short means a little extra time, but extending one could result in going somewhere I don't want to (Like an enemy) or putting up with the ending of a spin (which costs much more then cutting a spin short, by A LOT).

Segment 6 is also going to be a jump height check for speed, on the normal spin dash jump height doesn't change the time at all (seriously some of my fastest runs have full jumps rather then cut ones) but with speedy spin there may now be a margin worth worrying about, every second in the air now means a second lost to speedy spin which is 2-3x faster then the regular spin dash. If it does make a difference you can expect some of the high jumping (that I still do) to start going away except when its needed *stairs*. If it doesn't make enough of a difference then they probably wont die out. I've gotten better though, not many are full jumps anymore, they just aren't short jumps.

Size is not an issue for me. I have unlimited bandwidth and a 100 mbit line. Btw, you seem to have fixed the sound issue on segment 5. You sure you don't have unlimited upload length on youtube?

Raiker Z: 2010-12-11 05:33:24 pm
For the size thing I was thinking more the forums then issue for you, I'm not 100% sure how they do it, and how much memory they like to use up, but I guess I could put it up until you tell me you got it, then delete the post, it may be a hinderance, but at least it would be fixed relatively quickly.

I have done testing with speedy spin, short jumps are faster (by like a tenth of a second, but over time that adds up) but don't have the same rhythm of mid jumps, I'm hoping segment 6 is my first "flawless" segment. (Flawless here meaning no real time wasters, because all I have is a trip through the desert, only two things I'm worried about, 1 I want to manipulate a quiz, and if there is more then one I may hesitate or mess up getting to him quickly, 2. shop... I need to do alot of shop things without flaws, which means lotta menu navigating without messing up.) I'll probably begin tomorrow, I'm still distracted at the moment.

I'm hoping the sound was fixed because of my efforts, and not because it was put through the minor edit, although the latter means that I can fix the other 4 segments before submitting...

EDIT - Note that while jump height does effect speedy spin, regular spins do not share the same time loss, I'd be suprised if I even lost a second total due to jumping high in my first 5 segments.

Like I said, torrent! Then there can be no bandwidth issues. Also. I wouldn't worry about submission issues. The sound can easily be fixed by a minor edit. Nate can easily fix that.

I compressed it, but its still to large, and I don't use/do torrent at all. *Edit* They apparently don't allow large files on, saves me my worry, but I can't attach it.

I wasn't to worried really, worst case scenario is 4 segments have sound issues, not like every run doesn't have its little flaws.

Time to get to work, chapter 2 is one of my favorites, so despite all my distractions it may be done quickly.
i only skim this thread but i thought i saw mention of someone SSing this 100% (and mention of smrpg as reference). to he who may attempt this, best of luck!
Aha! Got the bloody youtube file for segment 4. It's in a bloody flash container, but hopefully it will turn out to be fine.
cyghfer- Ya I remember that, someone asking what the best way for money is for a single segment, back when I was gambling. If anyone dares to try best of luck to them.

mystery- Glad you managed to, hope it did too.

Not really much to say, not alot of talking going on here since my last post, anyone else excited for the Marathon thats coming up?

Oh right, segment 6 I got done, little shotty on the roof portion of it, but I didn't lose much time, if any, I would've been careful regardless, falling off those roofs is annoying.

Yep. Really looking forward to the marathon. Also watched up to segment 5 of your run. Damn, I've missed this game. It's so much better that the sequels. Really nice looking so far. Keep up the good work!
Ya, the original is still my favorite, but I can't deny that I enjoyed TTYD, as for super paper mario I couldn't even put up with playing through it, nor could I put up with watching the speed run... or any video I've found of it, I should stop talking about it before someone who likes it comes along...

Segment 7 is proving to be more annoying then I planned, the small mistakes lead to big ones in here, like a mis-step leads to falling down staircases instead of catching on a corner. And then there is the three Pokey Mummys... sigh they never line up how I want them to, which always leads to them wandering away... And the last reason it will probably take a bit longer then it should is, my run I made is at 1:09:12 (ish) it has a few mistakes that look ugly, so I wanted to correct them, but now rather then just fixing the mistakes so it looks a bit smoother (it has 3 ugly ones, I'd prefer 1 semi ugly) I want to shave off 13+ of those seconds so its in the 1:08 area (5 min or so ahead of planning). So depending on how unreasonable I am when I finally get a smooth segment, I could ignore it and keep trying for a better one.

I guess the good news about it is segment 8 and 9 have really nothing so there I doubt they will be trouble, 8 is just a fight, my favorite Peach segment (and the only one I like) and climbing down the stupid mountain. Segment 9 is a trip through the forest, little longer then the any% to grab a badge, but its still really easy, I think there are 2 more dodges...

No need to mention in 22 ish days I wont be speedrunning, I'll have a very big distraction that I'm sure you will all be watching too.

Last little note of my spam/excuses/update is that one of my distractions is almost over, I've been doing a playthrough of DKC 2 (Gotta wait for xmas, I got my mom DKC Returns, can't play it till then) and I'm just the final Lost World level, and the final fight from finishing the 102%, so that distraction is almost done ^.^. Pikmin 2 still looms in the shadows... One of these days I'll finish my 8 day 0 death 100% playthrough of that... one of these days...
Segment 7 is up and alive. I'm not sure if I'll work on 8 or 9 today, but I expect them to be finished soon.

THIS RUN CONTAINS SECRET WORLDS
I suddenly understand why you didn't use that thunder bolt on the fake Bowser at the end of Ch. 1. Also, are you not getting the large coin drops from the stone chomps because you're going to get most of your coins from jump attack?
Yes, all kudos to NoiseCrash for that idea, I may have not used it on Bowser? myself, but I wouldn't have thought to use it on a bat. As a sidenote to that, a faster way to get through things would be to ignore buying the extra fire flower that I got in segment 2, and use power shell twice for the koopa fights. While not quite as fast, I think its faster then buying the extra flower was, not sure if I contemplated that before or not, but by the time I thought of it, it was to late, perhaps instead buying a second thunder bolt would be better, but unlike the any% I used the extra turn on the last bat to get out Parakarry, with the thunder bolt I couldn't do that.

Also, yes, I don't think I buy anything from this instance on, until after Jump attack, so I ignore the drops, I'm also fairly certain I'll end up getting tons more coins then I need regardless, if you didn't notice on the second stone chomp I did get coins, but you can't leave the room untill the door is up anyway, so I needed to use the time.

Without wasting more time here are:

Segment 8

Segment 9

Finally just a warning for anyone excited that I managed 3 segments out today (Though one was done yesterday, just finished uploading late). The next three segments are going to take FOREVER. If they take me less then a week each, I'd be extremely suprised. Segment 10 has 4-5 hidden panels, which I need to get first try, plus the boo games. Segment 11 is Tubba's castle with the evil spike room. Finally segment 12 has the Tubba Blubba 9 damage fight, heart fight, and body fight, with a peach segment and maybe its own hidden panel. These three will be maddening to say the least...
THIS RUN CONTAINS SECRET WORLDS
9 damage fight? It sounds like you're planning for peril Mario abuse in the Tubba Blubba fights then. If so, that must be why you didn't have Peach put power rush in the chest yet. Do you plan on doing that between chapters 4 and 5 then?

One more thing: speaking of hidden panels, when do you plan on backtracking to the early areas of the game (goomba path, pleasant path, dry dry desert, etc.) to get the previously inaccessible hidden panels?
