I've been working on a speedrun of Oracle of Ages for the past few days. Those who were wondering what happened to my Kirby's Dreamland run - let's just say I'm not terribly suited to running platform games... Anyway, I'm trying to get most of the biggest potential problems out of the way first before actually going through from start to finish and planning it. Four things I'm working on:

Where to get the Shield

For all I know, it could be skippable entirely! I'm playing through at the moment and I've just arrived at Moonlit Grotto (I have completed this before btw). The only place so far I've needed the Shield is the second room in Level 2 with the spiny enemies you need to flip over. You can do this with the Shovel too though (which is a compulsory item, you can't skip it as far as I know) so it's all good. In the event that I do need the Shield (and I probably will, I can't really remember... I haven't played this for literally years), I've gathered some different places you can get the Shield. Along with the obvious choice of the shop in Lynna City, several Deku Scrubs also sell them. You can also get one from the trading post on Tokay Island for 10 Scent Seeds after reclaiming all your items. More news as it comes.

Essential purchases

In practically every Zelda game, you need to spend Rupees at some point. I'm working through the game at the moment making a list of all the stuff you need to buy. So far I've got that you need to spend 10 Rupees on the Tokay Challenge to get the Scent Seedling (although I'll probably get 20 or 30 just in case I screw up the mini-game, which is easily done). This leads us to our next point:

Rupee route(s)

Once I've made a list of essential purchases, I'm going to start from scratch and do a mass overworld investigation, searching for chests and so on containing Rupees. I'll then pick out the most efficient places to get Rupees (based on how much time I'll lose by getting the Rupees). And finally -

Which animal?

Dimitri, Ricky or Moosh? I've got to take several factors into account here. First of all, whose flute is easiest to get? I dunno about the last one but two ways is to do nothing at all, or buy from the shop for 150 Rupees. Doing nothing is clearly the fastest way, but there are two other things to think about - how the path to Symmetry City will be affected (which version takes the shortest amount of time to scale) and also, in the long term, would any of the animals allow faster travel in general?  I can imagine there are a few animal-specific sequence breaks as well.

Discuss, people.
Thread title:
YAY! Now when I have just finished my OoS it would be nice if the other Oracle game will be made. I had thought about doing it as wwll but now you can do it instead ;). I shall play the game alot and look for some tricks that might get in use. A good way to get rupees is from a "Schh, don't tell" man.
Have you thought about getting a ring? In the first dungeon there is a Power Ring L1 that can be worth taken. Don't know which rings there are in this game.

Good luck!

You're new to speed running, are you (even though I never speed runner either, for that matter)? You haven't played the game for years, have you...?

The animal partner is obvious; Moosh, the standard, "don't do anything" one. Getting 150 ruppees to get Dimitri's flute will probably force you to go a bit out of your way. The target game to get Ricky's flute would probably take too long to be usefull. Plus, I'm pretty sure Moosh's route to Simmetry city is the fastest.

Getting the shield is not necessary, but it's obviously usefull against those..spiky...things. If I remember correctly, there's a Deku Shrub that sells it for only 10-20 rupees.

Rupee route? Now this is awkward. You need a maximum of 50 rupees (given that you don't suck horribly at the Tokay game; come on! It's easy, damnit!), and you can easily get that many by cutting the shrubs/grass that in your way, killing ennemies, and maybe a single chest right in front of you, while I'm at it. You don't need a route at all.

Play the game. Typing wastes time.

Edit: Oh, and good luck and what-not.
I'm assuming you are making it single segment, right?  Since you think you might mess up on the tokay game...

Good luck, I'll help you in a few weeks, when I go home and get my GBA!

Speed is the key.
I don't think a rupee route is that important. Play through the game in a test run and I think that you will easily get 50+ ruppes by just collecting what enemies drop. If you really need to, you could pick a chest after getting the ember seeds from the Maku Tree. Just head down one screen and burn the tree on your right and there's a chest with 30 rupees. But i don't think you will need that.

As for the Symmetry City Route, Dimitris route is probably the fastest, but Dimitri is so slow on land, that I think Moosh is the best overall choice.

And skipping the shield is a good choice.

Good luck.
I was thinking of a 'route' as such because I thought there were other places in the game apart from the Tokay Challenge where you have to spend... don't you have to pay for the kart game to get the Tuni Nut repaired? And what about Rolling Ridge?

Like Tompa said, some rings (especially in chests) are always the same ring when you get it appraised so I'll look out for any useful ones. Unfortunately enough the Pegasus Ring (which doubles the length of time Pegasus Seeds last) pops up as late as the 8th dungeon. Speaking of which, the 8th boss is going to be hell. Not good for a single-segment. >_<

Thanks for the support so far!

Speed is the key.
You don't have to pay anything to get the Tuni Nut fixed, but I think that you'll have to pay for The Rolling Ridge thing, I didn't check it though.

You know how to get the power ring L1, right? It will probably take 30 seconds or so... I'm not sure how much time it would save overall though.
Just checked on Game Faqs, and the only ring that is usefull and easy to get is that Power Ring.

Have you got a good clear time Quijo? Or have you just start training?
Nah, haven't actually timed it from start to finish yet. That'll be a while unfortunately.

I haven't finished my necessary purchases list yet, but I've just arrived at Rolling Ridge and found that you have to pay 10 Rupees for the Goron Dance. There's probably more to come. I should have it finished by tomorrow, so by then I'll have the full list and also be able to confirm if you can skip the Shield or not.

Ok. Just like my Seasons run then. Did never time the untill it become finished. So that is the first good time I have got.
I will start playing Ages tomorrow. I haven't played Ages for Ages ;D. Then I shall see if I can find anything usefull for you.
Righty ho then, time for a monster update.

First off, the Shield is skippable. I even have proof:

That's a complete single-quest inventory with absence of Shield. Sorted.

The essential purchases list is ready:

* 10 Rupees needed for Tokay Challenge to get Scent Seedling
* 10 Rupees needed for Goron Dance (in the present) to get Brotherhood Emblem
* 10 Rupees needed for Target Carts to get Meat, but scoring 9/12 or over gets you 20 Rupees
* NONE/10 Rupees needed for Big Bang to get Old Mermaid Key (the first game is free, subsequent games are 10 Rupees)
* 20 Rupees needed for Goron Gallery to get Lava Juice
* 20 Rupees needed for Goron Dance (in the past) to get Mermaid Key
* 300 Rupees needed for Magic Potion to cure King Zora in the past

That last one took me by surprise. I just knew there was some nasty amount of money required later on in the game. Why didn't I remember? >_<

I reckon 100 Rupees is a reasonable amount for all the mini-games. I'm going to have to collect half of it before the Tokay Challenge obviously. As for the Magic Potion, I have my bases covered. I'm not going to try to get it off Maple, it'll be too risky. There happens to be a chest in no other than King Zora's palace containing 200 Rupees! I'll probably get the remaining 100 from one of those "Shhh! Don't tell!" men you find under trees. There's one in the past just south of the entrance to the Goron Dance place.

My second investigation run through the game (which I've just started) will take much, much longer. Not only am I searching out efficient places to get Rupees, I'm also looking for fixed rings. I'll make a list of them and see which ones will help with my speed run.

Expect an even longer update when I'm done.

Are you using any guides or GameFAQs guides for the Rings?  It might save you some time...

I have just wrote about the rings. The only one usefull that's easy to get is the Power Ring Lvl 1 in first dungeon.
Isn't it cute?
Ummm..... That really doesn't prove it. A LikeLike could have eaten it. I believe you, but that doesn't prove it. Tongue
Eaten the ring you mean? No, I dont think so. Because there aren't any Like Likes in the first dungeon...

I think he's referring to the shield...  Tongue

Hahahaha, I knew someone would bring that up. But I didn't do that. The Shield is skippable.

Recording will be far off, I'm afraid. I've got a lot of work to do, this run is going to take a while. I've got one week of school left so maybe I'll have more time to practice over the holidays. I'm trying as hard as I can though. I stayed up until 2am last night practicing.

TSA, that never occured to me. I'll look on GameFAQs now. I may as well continue searching myself though. The Power Ring L-1 seems useful (I'm going to time some boss battles tonight to see how much time it saves) but I'm concerned about the lowered defense side of it.

My ring plan: since the L-2 Ring Box costs 300 Rupees, I probably won't get it and stick with the standard ring box, but this means that I'll only be able to use one ring to help me. I'll have to decide on what ring to use when I've got a fuller list. Also since I'll only be using one ring, I'll be able to leave the Friendship Ring and get it appraised for free so I won't have to figure out where to get Rupees for it.

Just one question to ask: Maybe I'm being a bit paranoid, but have there been any instances in the past of 'lurkers'? In other words, people who hang around threads like this waiting for the runner to reveal their plans and tactics, and then running off with them to produce their own run with stolen ideas? I feel a little uneasy doing big posts like my last one.

Speed is the key.
I would never do that.  Lips Sealed

It's just not fun. And not right.  Angry
I have just told you that the only usefull ring is that Power Ring... Or shall you try to get luck on a gasha seed or something?

Well.. I have planned to run this game. But when you have thought about it, I won't make one. I will help you search for tips and tricks instead. And I haven't heard of anyone els Speedrunning this game except me and TSA. And TSA won't do it yet, what I have heard... So I don't think you shall be worry.
I'm not convicting anyone who has posted on this thread, I just mean anyone in general.

As for the Rings... I think the Pegasus Ring might be useful. Either that or I can quickly get the Satchel upgrade from Tingle upon getting back from Crescent Island. I'm sure there's some other rings I should consider first.

EDIT: I wouldn't try to get one from a Gasha Nut and hope for the best, there's too many different Rings. Trying to get a certain ring like that would be mad. Grin
Maybe if it was segmented (like Tompa originally wanted for his OOS run), you could manipulate luck and get the appropiate ring.  (like make finding the ring the first segment).

But this is not suited for single segment, and I'm not even sure how much luck you can manipulate... Cheesy
