I hope nobody who was running this before minds, but I'll be picking this run up. Probably going to start out with the Warrior, and will segment it a fair bit. I won't be accepting any deaths.
For the case you're still checking this forums: Did you have a special trick for rescuing the villagers in the ogre village? I can't find a reliable way to block them inside the cage, so when I run to the exit they will always get out sooner or later, and die if I didn't kill most of the ogres in the village.
Hmm, I was killing most of them. I didn't really find a trick, it was a tricky segment. I'm going to look at it right now.
Edit: I just watched it. I kill most of them and then run and hope they won't get killed. I'm in holidays now, so I'm going to try to upload all my segments on YouTube after Christmas. I just noticed I said I would do it in my last post, but I guess I forgot about it. This time, I'll try to do it for real.
Do you have Vista? I had a more crappy computer before with Windows XP, and I could record it. I tried it with Vista, and I had the same problem: horrible frame rate. That's why I never finished this run I guess.
Hm, is there a guide on how to set up Camtasia Studio 5 for recording games? Theres nothing on the sda kb about it and I only managed to capture something when starting capturing on the desktop, and the fps were quite horrible as well t__t
Hi all, I'm currently attempting a wizard speedrun of Nox. So far I've recorded the first two levels. I'm quite determined about doing this speedrun, because it's my all-time favourite game, and I was quite disheartened when I couldn't find any completed runs uploaded anywhere. So far my only problems have to do with getting camtasia to record. Also, I hope it won't matter if the first level is played on different resolution than the rest - had some issues with recording at larger than 640x480 that I resolved afterwards.
I'm not really used to the Wizard campaign. I never finished it and never got any far either.
One question: At the first part where you go rescue some guy underground, you stop by every chest and get every piece of gold. Do you have something to buy in a later segment? What do you plan to do with all that money. Also, is every spell you pick up necessary? Every seconds count in a speedrun. The best way to plan it is to pickup things that are directly on your way, not in a secondary room that you have to go.
As I said, I'm not really familiar with the Wizard campaign, but if you know where to find the boots to run faster, it's a huge timesaver so get them as soon as possible.
The reason why i beat up the bandits, looted the whole place and escorted their leader to the local authorities was to get over 700 gold by the end of that level. I use the gold to buy the haste (yay) spellbook in the next level, which is indeed a huge timesaver. I could have gone to the wizard's tower immediately without bothering with the bandits in town, but I get over 600 gold just with that little visit. Without doing that I would need to stop to fight alot of bandits and sell their stuff in level 3, and I think that I save some time by doing it the way I did. Anyway, I'll uppload the replays for level 3 and 4 as well in a moment, stay tuned for some sequence breaking using swap location ;), managed to get around 4:30 on chapter 4 - Field of Valor (even though I kinda failed against the lich). Oh, and thanks for the quick response RealityO, watching your warrior speedrun of level 7 really gave me the inspiration to start this run myself.
Well it's a good thing that my partly done run helped for something. You sure skip a lot of part in Chapter 4. That's good.
I wish I could help you with future segments, but I don't know how they're played with the Wizard after Chapter 6 (I guess 4-5-6 are the only ones that are very similar, and then the swamp and last chapter) And it's a huge skip in chapter 5 with that Ogress as well. But why did you way so long before saving? Were you hoping to do it in one whole segment?
I remember playing this game years ago. I imagine its not the easiest to speedrun. The controls always seemed unresponsive...or at least they took some getting used to. I'm surprised you are getting the segments out so fast, but they look good for the most part.
When I do the swap position trick in chapter 5 I first have to run to that spot, and while doing so I attract the attention of an ogre. I stood around for a few seconds avoiding the ogre untill he decides to ignore me as well, and return to his post. The trick is basically to hit the female ogre inside the house on the other side of the fence with a magic missile, and at the same time to hit an ogre on my side of the fence. If I try to shoot magic missiles into the house while an ogre is chasing me, they'll only hit the chasing ogre. Also, for some reason the ogress doesn't come out of her house unless I 'aggro' an enemy on the other side of the fence.

No, I planned from the start to do that level in 2 segments, because the swap location trick in that level is something that worked only around 33% of times. And let's not forget bloody useless Horvath, the archwizard who can't defeat a single ogre by himself. I recorded the first segment in 1 or 2 attempts, but had to restart the second segment over 20 times, mostly really short attempts where I couldn't manage to attract the attention of the shy ogress. At least 3 attempts failed because Horvath died while I was running out of the area.
Anyway, I've uploaded chapters 1-7, the links are posted in my first post on page 6 of this thread. edit: I might try to re-run chapter 7 before I start with 8. It's a very hard segment for me, and I was just happy I survived the boss, so I already uploaded it. But when I think about it, it might be a good idea to do it in 2 segments, cutting off where the hard part starts. That way I can retry the boss if I die without having to sell stuff, buy the books I need and run through the easy but long part of the level.
Segmenting sure should help for this segment. I know how you feel about the fireballs. Had the same issue.
I'm impressed by the speed at which you go through this speedrun. I guess you know the game a lot to be able to do it so quick. It seems hard as a wizard to be able to move fast while surviving and keeping a constant flow of mana. Good job
Thanks for the words of encouragement :). I just did the segmented run of chapter 7 and managed to improve my time by ~45 seconds. I'm uploading it now, and I will replace the old link when it's up. Stay tuned for chapter 8-11, I'm getting telekinesis from the conjurer's house, which could prove useful and amusing. For those who don't know, telekinesis is a spell that moves objects away from your cursor. You can stack 3-4 telekinesises, and then use your cursor to push your character around the place. It's alot faster than running with haste + boots of speed, _IF_ I manage not to crash into every obstacle and corner in the way. edit: new chapter 7 run is up. Ok, I just finished chapter 8. Sorry, but I didn't manage to use the telekinesis-slide trick, the paths are too narrow and I keep bouncing like a tennis ball between walls. I'll keep experimenting with this though, and see if I can find another usage for it other than moving boulders. I did however discover another swap location sequence break, with the help of windows and bats. Uploading.
Chapter 9 is now finished and uploaded, here's a playlist with all of the videos.
Chapter 10 is going to be really hard. I might even post a bonus video with my favourite deaths from this chapter after I'm done with the run. I'll be doing it in 2 segments 1 segment for each part of the level, because the start of this chapter entire chapter is just brutal, but to make it a bit easier I'll use invisibility for some parts.
edit: Just remembered a way to get around relatively quickly while invisible - swap position. It's alot quicker than fighting my way through, and maybe even faster than running in some parts because I won't have to heal up and recast forcefield etc, plus it's a safe and sure method. This'll allow me to combine the first 2 areas into 1 segment, but I'll probably run the third and fourth area as 1 segment each, due to the excessive ammounts of deathrays.
Very impressive run indeed Great to see some people still having interest about Nox !
I'm quite impressed by the sulfurous staff/lightning trick, and of course swap locations. Please keep up the good job
However, perhaps you could improve some parts (I have chapter 6 in mind) , beginning is tough because of some lock spells and fireballs missed. Also maybe you could gain some time using more fireballs and less lightning ?
Can you explain me exactly how you record this game?
Are you on XP or Vista? Which program do you use at what resolution?
I used to record it with Fraps on XP with my old computer, but since I changed my computer, I can't record at more than 5fps (even tho the computer is 3x faster than the old one). I'm on vacation next week so I might try to finish this run so we could do a double submission, missing only the Druid campaign.

I'm on windows XP sp3, and I use camtasia 6. Desktop resolution at 1680x1050, game resolution at 800x640. When i start camtasia recorder I have to draw a 800x640 box in the upper left corner of the screen with 'select area', otherwise it'll switch to 640x480 when i start recording, because the game's main menu is in that resolution. In the beginning I had alot of problems regarding this. I tried to record with fraps myself but whenever I try, both nox and fraps crash. I never was any good with the warrior, so I'd love to see your full warrior run submitted.

I wonder : why never use invisibility ?
Well, nice job anyways, go on !!
Thanks for the feedback and encouragement. Yeah I could maybe improve chapter 6 a bit, It's not that hard to run with the use of lock. Only 2 slight blunders come to mind - the first where I wanted the 3 mana potions from the hut, and decided to lock the door so that I could loot in peace, but the warrior followed me in. By missing a lock spell I assume you mean that the door doesn't close behind me in time, and a warrior manages to slip through? It's mostly not an issue, if I manage to shake them off anyway. The second one is where I foolishly push myself off the elevator with my own fireball's knockback. I prefer to use lightning, burn and missiles of magic because they're easy to hit with. I never was any good at aiming fireballs, they have a really tiny hitbox. Besides, they take alot of mana, and If (when) I miss, it's alot of wasted mana and time. If I would be more consistent with hitting my target with fireballs, I might use them more. Also, my fireball spell's level is only 1, while my magic missiles & lightning atleast get to level 2 at some point. Why no invisibility? Because before chapter 10, I've found that just running past everything is faster. If you run while invisible then it's as if you weren't invisible at all. In chapter 10 I end up having to use invisibility for some parts, simply because it's faster than trying to fight my way through some places.
Okay, my wizard speedrun is now finished and I've uploaded it to youtube before I submit the run. Also, I'll check each segment and see if I can improve them in any way.
