What's going on. This is my first attempt at speed running games since I started watching AGDQ since 2014. Been trying to think of a game to speed run, and the only one that wasn't a RPG that I would have to spend 5+ hours each run was my favorite game while growing up, Castlevania 4. I know there are a LOT of people who have been playing this game longer than I have that have 33 min runs that I'll never beat in the next 5 years, but I wanted to get started trying to do the whole speed run thing.

At the moment I'm aiming to beat the game at least once a day and see my progress just getting through it without dying, then move on to the more advanced things like glitches and damage boosting. Does anyone have any advice for someone new to speed running in general or for the game? I've watched a handful of speed runs done by different people, and that's really all I have to go off of. Also, if anyone knows where to find game specific advice for certain glitches, b/c I've watched people do some of them, but the explanations aren't the clearest of how to do them.
Thread title:
Concerning Castlevania 4 in particular, I found http://www.speedrun.com/Super_Castlevania_IV/guide/zlj1y, which seems to be a blow-by-blow guide on everything concerning Castlevania 4, which is about four hours long as present by the guy who currently holds second place. Hopefully this is detailed enough, since I'm not a Castlevania runner I can't say for sure, but it seems like a step in the right direction.

In general, there is a ton of information through these forums for new runners in various places. Make sure to introduce yourself to everyone in the New Users sections and read up a lot on the FAQ http://speeddemosarchive.com/lang/faq_en.html and the Wiki https://kb.speeddemosarchive.com/Main_Page. Don't be afraid to ask a lot of questions (it's what the forums are for) and, most importantly, don't burn yourself out. Speedruns are fun, not a chore.

Good luck, and welcome to SDA!

Hey buddy.  Let me link you to a great speedrun source for this game. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1mQ4FrlgifQGJmwal5MD5a5NUJr4x3d3T-T5JE8YDTv4/edit#gid=0

Also, I made a tutorial for the 4-4 zip, which is probably one of the glitches you're mentioning.  Sorry for the shameless plug but I'm sure it's the only one out there (also warning, it's long and I'm not sure how comprehensive it is): http://www.twitch.tv/dbx/c/5055072

However, that trick saves 10 seconds so it's not a crazy idea to leave it out while you're still feeling out the run.

I guess it's unfortunate that there's no explained tutorial for 1cyc chandeliers (as far as i know) or the clip in stage 1.  If you look through VODs of all the good runners (Paul, JoeDamillio, hanagebelmondo, etc)  you'll probably find some good boss strats.

Good luck w/ learning. Smiley
