I'm glad that you guys liked the run! As I said in my comments, I played every level in this run as well as I ever have except for 8-4. There is still room for improvement, but that is asking a lot.
After comparing my video to Trevor's, I did save time on 1-1...
* takes foot out of mouth *
I now see where my mistake was made during testing/timing for this level, but I'm mad at myself for being an idiot. This error could have really cost me if I had accepted a slower finish on the first freaking level.
The only way thats gonna get beat is if glitches are used. The wall jump is near impossible under pressure, but you can glitch into the wall in 1-2 if you use a crouch jump.
Hey Scott. Very nice run! I cant beleive it. maybe my run was a 5:05 by SDA rules afterall? I'm still unsure. your run is about .6 faster than mine, but if you put that into a ratio of how much time is saved at SDA, I may have been at 5:05.9 range.
probably more like 5:06.1
My whole run was ruined due to my mess up underwater in 8-4 i think. I might go compare our runs side by side right now.
That "perfect" run may be closer than you think. It will not be accepted by SDA, because I know that I cant beat you by 1 second+, I can see myself getting a 5:08.2-.3 very soon if I keep this up. My aim right now is to just get a 5:08 though, we'll see what happens.
what things do SDA allow in a smb speedrun? I have many questions as to if things would be allowed or not.

getting a mushroom wastes too much time for this.
I think with no set rules using a normal console, a 5:01 by SDA timing is possible.... just a thought.
SDA is, in general, more accepting of glitches than other venues. I would be shocked if things like pipe confusion got a SMB run wholly rejected as far more abusive glitches are accepted for runs of other games.
I think i've discovered easier techniques that i can use to get a 5:05/5:08. Hopefully i'll get a 5:05/5:08 within the next few days. Then I have other things in store.
Maybe it's a 5:08, and I just timed it wrong, I'm not sure. Maybe I'll make a few more attempts today, but after thinking I beat the game Nearly flawless and still getting a 5:09 really aggrevates me!
Well, nearly every glitch is banned by tg for smb, so I doubt you'd be able to use whatever you're thinking of (wall jump glitch I assume).
Of course, I don't know about what the rules are for here, but I assume with a game as prestigious as smb, they would follow tg rules. Else others might have used them before?

keep in mind at least one of us thinks sda should totally replace tg. if tg rules are followed on this site then that just means we still have work to do.
True, I definately think sda will (and has) obsolete TG for console and pc speedruns. However, there is such a precedent set with the current runs, I don't know how you can obsolete them by using a glitch that the runner himself knows about, but chooses not to use because other runs in the past have never used it.
I know its a vicious cycle of "since this run didn't use it, I can't use it," but most other games have glitches that improve game speed because they were just discovered, not ones like smb where a ton of people have known about wall jump's and warp pipe glitches.
I still think 5:04 without glitches is possible...
Maybe you could make an exception for this one game, because people have been putting so much effort into runs TG will accept, and have a glitch-free any% category in addition to the regular categories.
Agree ^^ The run AndrewG want to do would be another category. If the glitch save Andrew 3 seconds its wrong to replace a record from Andrew one second faster then Sdkess, using the 3 seconds glitch if you know what I mean. Though, the glitch you talking about sure is hard to do and would probably look impressive.
The same for my record for Smb3. I have a run four seconds faster then Uretas run up here on the site. But I don´t have the heart to send it becuse I don´t see it as the real record. The reason is becuse I walked trough the wall in the final castle wich save me around 6 seconds maybe 7. Ureta (sleepz) followed the TG settings for his run. He knew about the glitch I guess when he did his run. If it wasn´t for the TG settings hes run would have been around 6 seconds faster.

I disagree. I don't think exceptions should be made just because some people wanted to submit the run elsewhere. SDA is about showcasing the fastest runs; it's not about showing charity to people who wanted the Twin Galaxies world record. If that was the case, there would probably need to be a "TG Rules" category for every game on the site.
There is no other game where this really applies though, that is the point. No other game has been as hotly contested as super mario bros. I think one exception can be made, just because it is the number one title for closeness in full game completion (I realize quake, doom, etc. have just as much competition on ind. levels, but the entire game is not seperated by one second, as is the case here).
But who cares if this is a hotly contested title? We're only interested in the fastest time; it shouldn't matter how it got there. I still don't see why SDA should make an exception for people who submitted their run to Twin Galaxies, who have different rules.
I could understand better if we're just talking about glitchless vs. glitchfull, but I don't think 1-2 seconds of gain is enough to cause a stir over (and I don't think that's what we're talking about, anyway).
One of the considerations to be made in hosting speedruns is that typically, you do not want to send your visitors directly off to another site. SDA exists simultaneously alongside TAS videos and both use each other as resources, but these are two seperate types of running: realtime and TAS. The fan of SDA will go watch some runs done on TAS and see the differences, and the same holds true of members of the TAS forums, who often gain inspiration for a run from an SDA version. My point is that with the exception of TAS videos, SDA is not about sending people away to other sites. We have all the human ability world records, and TASvideos has all the TAS world records.
Now look at the situation here with Super Mario Bros.
Supposing we don't host the fastest run out there, people are going to either leave the site to see it, or not come here at all. Or they'll see a faster run on TASvideos and use either the forums there or here, or google, to discover that faster runs done by humans exist. Particularly with a title of such universal interest, it greatly benefits SDA to host the world record anything-goes human speedrun of this game, even if it is alongside the glitch-free run, and even if (as is probably deserved), much more credit is given to the glitch-free one. I, for one, would much rather have people coming to SDA than getting lost in the lack of information, lack of updates to replace world records, and outright factual inaccuracies contained in descriptions of videos, which plague youtube and the like.
Having said that, I think that timing really shouldn't be referred to as TG-timed or SDA-timed. It slants credit towards one site or the other, which perhaps neither deserves. A general term is better. The discrepency is based on when you gain control (SDA timing) compared to turning the power on (TG timing), right? So we have control-timed and power-timed games, with control-timed being a standard around here, so that we only need refer to timing systems if we're mentioning a power-timed game. Even if the differences are more numerous or complex than that, we're basically saying BC and AD when we should be saying BCE and CE.
You have a point there Tmont. I will send my Smb 3 run. I´m almoust sure it´s a 11:07 by SDA timing but I will still try to improve it a few more seconds at least.
I agree that glitches would be preferrable to include, but if we really want to preserve history, we should use our own reasoning. Let's call the pipe confusion glitch a borderline mysterious teleportation and thus different catagory. That should work it out, right?
Yeah, why should tg's standards mirror onto SDA? SDA is an independent entity which derives its standards from itself and its membership, not external, competing agents. I mean, by the same token, would you expect tg to suddenly start using SDA rules for their records?
Seriously... to ban the walljump? Wtf is wrong with that? I see it more like a quite hard tactic instead of a "glitch". What are the reasons to ban such thing? It's so annoying stupid that it makes me hate TG even more. There's no point of sending your runs there. It will probably be rejected because you did a TRICK that they didn't allow. It doesn't make sense at all >:(.
Yay, Frezy! Make the any % run done as well :D. You can do it on the game session if you like, hehe. I think a lot of people would be happy to see it ;).
